Within the last year Google, Yahoo!, and MSN have all begun
returning "blended" results for some percentage of the
searches that people conduct, where a combination of one or
more specialized search result types, like news, images,
and videos, appear along with traditional web pages on the
search results page.


Before Google launched what it initially called "Universal
Search" in May 2007, this type of specialized content was
only returned as a result of a specifically targeted
"vertical" search.


Blended, or universal, search provides several new
opportunities to get yourself listed in the search engines.


Search engine marketing firm iProspect has just published
the iProspect Blended Search Results Study.


The study was conducted by JupiterResearch and amongst its
key findings, the study shows that:


- 36% of search engines user click "news" results within
blended search results, while only 17% click a "news" result
after conducting a news-specific search


- 31% of search engine users click "image" results within
blended search results, while 26% click an "image" result
after conducting an image-specific search


- 17% of search engine users click "video" results within
blended search results, while only 10% click a "video"
result after conducting a video-specific search


While images are the most clicked type of result after a
vertical-specific search, news items are the most clicked
type of result within blended search results.


Consider the content of your website. What other forms of
searchable content could you provide?


News items?
Images?
Videos?
PDF files?
Music clips?


Then focus on optimizing all your content, not just the text.
