Former Time Inc. Editor-in-Chief Norman Pearlstine will sever ties to the parent company after Labor Day to become a senior adviser to the Carlyle Group, the global buyout firm.

Carlyle, which recently was part of the winning consortium that bought VNU, owner of Nielsen Media Research and Hollywood Reporter, is interested in stepping up its media activity. It currently has $41.9 billion under management and is interested in expanding in publishing, TV and new media.

Pearlstine became a senior adviser to Time Warner in January after 11 years in the firm's top editorial job.

Ed hears ...

... that The Citizen, an award-winning 13,000 circ. daily in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, is seeking a feature writer for its Lake Life section. Candidate must work well under pressure and have a great record for meeting deadlines. The writer should be a terrific team player, someone whose primary responsibility will be writing feature cover stories but also will assist the Lake Life editor in proofing pages and compiling briefs. The person will also serve as one of our backups to our copy desk, and could paginate one day a week. QuarkXPress and design skills will be necessary. The writer will have the freedom to generate many of their own local story ideas on a variety of different topics (Health, Food, Community, People), and will work in one of the most beautiful regions of the country. Please send your resume/clips/references to Lake Life Editor Ashley Hanry, 25 Dill St., Auburn, NY 13021, or e-mail ashley.hanry@lee.net. No phone calls please. (OK to mention Ed)

... that Curve magazine (located in San Francisco) has an opening for an associate editor to begin ASAP. Curve is the best-selling lesbian magazine in the country and the person in this position plays a key role in making that happen. Curve's a fun place to work, with a small 6 person office in an open floor plan in the old Hamm's Brewery Building at 16th & Bryant. Office is casual dress. The job sometimes requires travel. Office events (like our annual retreat in August) are family friendly. This is a career-track position we'd like to see grow into the position of managing editor, depending on the skills of the person we hire. Please make sure you're familiar with the magazine before you apply. If this position is of interest, please send me a resume, cover letter and 3 clips asap to diane@curvemag.com. OK to mention Ed, but applicants would do better to reference MySpace: www.myspace.com/curvemagazine (where a full job description can be found on the July 17 blog entry).

... that Pinnacle Publishing seeks a Production Assistant for I Do For Brides magazine (based in metro Atlanta). Tasks include writing all advertiser-related editorial, editing articles written by other writers, and scheduling and participating in photo shoots. Other responsibilities will include scheduling bridal shows, managing web content, and attending various industry events. Some travel will be required. Salary range is $25,000 - $30,000. Interested candidates should email resume and cover letter to Jennifer Gibbs at editor@idoforbrides.com. No phone calls, please. Do NOT mention Ed.

Internships

... that Time Out New York magazine is currently seeking an intern for its Check Out (fashion editorial) department. This position is ideal for anyone with a strong interest in fashion and who is familiar with fashion labels and shops in New York City. Applicants should be interested in the world of fashion as well as the magazine publishing industry. Responsibilities will include market research and managing contacts, press materials and look books, as well as calling in and returning items featured in Time Out New York. We will hire a car service for you on a weekly basis to conduct the entire return process. You will pack the items, organize where each package is going, and make the returns throughout Manhattan via car. Candidates will receive occasional opportunities to pitch ideas and write. Interested candidates should fax or email cover letter and resume to the following: Anne Finn - Editorial Coordinator (with Check Out Intern in the subject line); 646.432.3010 - Fax; hr@timeoutny.com. It is okay to mention Ed2010 on your application materials.

... that Redbook is accepting internship applications for the Fall 2006 semester. We're looking for a college junior or senior, or a graduate student who is organized, independent, and eager to learn. We need someone who can handle multiple tasks simultaneously and follow them through to completion. Meticulous attention to detail is also critical. Ideally, the student will be available two full days per week (from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.) and must receive college credit for the internship. Interested and qualified candidates should e-mail a cover letter and resume (within the body of the e-mail) to Tara Berson at tberson@hearst.com by Friday, August 4. (OK to mention Ed)

... that Angeleno magazine, a monthly L.A. lifestyle glossy, is now accepting applications for its fall 2006 editorial internship semester, which runs from late August through late December. The publication focuses on fashion, dining, nightlife, beauty, travel, Hollywood, and the arts. Duties primarily include fact-checking, proofing, research, party coverage, editing calendar listings, and occasional short writing assignments. Front-of-book story pitches are encouraged. Interns, in short, will be spending their time almost exclusively interacting with editorial copy. Unlike most equivalent internships, there will be almost no menial work (copying, faxing, and getting coffee). Applicants must commit to a Tues/Thurs, Mon/Wed, or Wed/Fri rotation, from 9:30am to 6pm. Please send a cover letter and resume (in body of e-mail no attachments) by Tuesday, July 25th, to associate editor Gary Baum (gbaum@modernluxury.com). The publication is located along Wilshire near La Brea.
