The Hearst Is Over For Her

SURE, there's a fabulous new gym, dizzying views of Central Park and a snazzy new cafeteria, but that doesn't mean everyone is going to stay at Hearst Magazines for life.

Melissa Biggs Bradley, the editor of critically acclaimed Town & Country Travel and the feature editor on Town & Country, is bolting from the bluebloods' bible at month's end after 11 years on the magazine.

She may go down as one of the first high-ranking editors to leave since the Hearsties began moving into their Norman Foster-designed glass skyscraper tower. T&C, which published the Travel magazine as a quarterly spin-off, moved to the 33rd floor in early June.

The Rejection Connection
By Dan Schulman
7/18/06
http://villagevoice.com/news/0629,schulman,73886,5.html

The prospect of breaking into the seemingly impenetrable fortress that is The New Yorker can make a writer contemplate crazy and desperate things. So it was for Mac Montandon, when, a couple years ago, he received an assignment to write an article on spec for the magazine's Talk of the Town section. To Montandon, who'd been trying, unsuccessfully, to break into the magazine, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. But on the day he'd arranged to conduct the crucial interview, one that couldn't be postponed, his wife went into labor with the couple's first child. "I'll probably sound like the bastard of all time," the 35-year-old journalist says, "but I was a little conflicted."

On the day his daughter, Oona, was born, he was to meet Bob Pollard, the frontman of the band Guided by Voices, who, Montandon had learned, planned to announce the dissolution of the band to a capacity crowd at the Bowery Ballroom that evening. It promised to be one of those offbeat New York moments that Talk of the Town stories capture so well, and Pollard seemed the type of quirky, yet complex, persona that might intrigue New Yorker readers. Luckily, Oona was born in time for Montandon to meet Pollard that afternoon. And making trips back and forth from the venue to the hospital, he even caught one of Guided by Voices' final performances. Later, Montandon framed his story with the elegance, wit, and detail he believed were the ingredients of a successful Talk story. In the end, though, the magazine never published it. "I think that was the closest I've come to cracking into the golden tower," recalls Montandon, a senior editor at the soon-to-be-relaunched Radar magazine, who estimates he's pitched Talk of the Town 15 times over the past four years. (One of his most recent: a piece on the etiquette of holding subway and elevator doors open for other passengers—do you make a token effort with the "dainty one-toe" technique or take "the full-body approach"? In retrospect, he concedes, his pitch may have been a bit too "high-concept.")

Rejection, of course, is simply a rite of passage for most writers. For Montandon, though, it formed the seed of an idea. Since there was no shortage of writers like him who'd tried and failed to make The New Yorker's pages, he figured there was an abundance of unpublished Talk stories lying around New York City. About a year ago he set out to provide a home for the orphan submissions, quietly launching silenceofthecity.com, where he resurrects the unpublished contributions of Talk of the Town rejectees. Montandon insists the site is every bit a tribute to The New Yorker, not a parody of it. It maintains the look and feel of the magazine's signature section down to the font and, in the top left corner, the profile of Eustace Tilly, the aristocratic fellow who appeared on the cover of The New Yorker's first issue in February 1925 (and on many others since). On Silence, however, Tilly trades his monocle for an eye patch to reinforce the theme of the site—work that under other circumstances wouldn't have seen the light of day.

By Danielle Long

In an attempt to increase brand awareness, men's magazine Arena, will launch an interactive blog. The move is part of Emap's ongoing strategy to expand its magazine brands across other "high growth" platforms.

The blog, which goes live on July 24, aims to encourage communication between Arena readers and contributors. William Drew, editor of Arena, said: "Arena didn't want to simply create a web site which talks at people. We view the web as an opportunity to strike up a two-way dialogue with our users, get their feedback on our content and form a community around the Arena brand.

"We also plan to use this relationship to generate new content for the magazine. Using blogging technology makes this easy and we're excited to be creating a site that has such fresh content for our readers."

... that LA.com is currently seeking an entry-level assistant editor with strong writing and editing skills, as well as an impressive insider's knowledge of Los Angeles. The successful applicant will contribute items to the blog, oversee and maintain several areas of the site, write reviews for other editors as needed, and (the unfun stuff) regularly assist with research, programming and site maintenance. A Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field is strongly preferred. For consideration, please email resume, cover letter and writing samples to Lonny Pugh at lpugh@la.com. (Official Ed2010 posting)

... that the magazine division for the Springfield News-Leader, the newspaper serving the third-largest city in Missouri, is seeking a magazine designer. We currently have one glossy quarterly publication, another glossy quarterly set to launch in September and three newsprint publications that come out monthly or weekly. We are creating two new titles for 2007 as well. The job would be designing new magazines from scratch and following our lead designer's visions on the current publications. Direct questions to mrose@news-leader.com and see Ozarks Signature online: OzarksSignature.com

... that there may be a production spot opening up at Blueprint Magazine, which is part of Martha Stewart Omnimedia. "They really need someone who is expert with type closing procedures on magazines: very specific tracking, kerning, ragging lines of type. They are extremely perfectionistic at Martha Stewart and need a Production person who is very accomplished with type finessing and the InDesign program. They are not looking for a designer. THIS IS A PRODUCTION SPOT. On their next issue they will need a new freelancer to start with them. This spot will probably become full-time because they are a new magazine and want to bulk up their staff." Ed's tipster says to contact Denise Clappi, dclappi@marthastewart.com, 212-827-8679 (Do NOT mention Ed)
