1. Boston Globe
Globe Media to launch luxury home magazine
by Robert Weisman
July 22, 2006
http://www.boston.com/business/globe/articles/2006/07/22/globe_media_to_launch_luxury_home_magazine/

Boston Globe Media will launch a magazine featuring high-end homes and design this fall as part of a push to diversify the company's business base and tap into the market for niche publications.

The new magazine, Design New England, will debut in October and publish every other month, starting in January. It will have a ``controlled circulation" of 50,000, with about 40,000 issues mailed free to affluent households in the Boston area and about 10,000 to architects and designers.

``There's been a trend in our business to use our expertise in publishing to expand into niche markets where we know readers and advertisers will be attracted to our quality products," said Alfred S. Larkin Jr. , executive vice president of Boston Globe Media. The group includes the Boston Globe, Boston.com, GlobeDirect, the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, and interests in Metro Boston and NESN.

IDENTITY THEFT: By the time you read this, the Cond? Nast impostor may have been caught. Corporate security agents for Cond? Nast Publications (parent of WWD) were dispatched to the Bridgehampton Polo Club over the weekend for a sting operation, designed to nab the "Indian or Middle Eastern" man who has been making the New York party circuit rounds, claiming to be a variety of Cond? Nast editors.

"He's no newcomer to law enforcement," said a Cond? Nast security source. "He's been in jail numerous times, though I don't think he's ever served a lengthy sentence." The source said he did not believe the "petty scam artist," whose real name appears to be Priyantha De Silva or Di Silva, was dangerous.

3. Inside Higher Ed
The J-School Boom
by David Epstein
July 24, 2006

“Declining circulation.” “Weaker ad revenue.” “Fewer jobs.” “Dinosaur.”

All of these are from news reports on the present state of the news business. Even The New York Times is cutting her page size to reduce costs.

Why then, are some institutions cheerfully touting the creation of new journalism programs? The answer, they say, is that the writing and information gathering skills taught to journalism students are an entr?e to an increasing number of jobs, both journalism and marketing, as the media comes to include both magazines and Webzines, both broadcasts and podcasts.

Consumer Reports to Add Shopping Magazine
by Maria Aspan
July 24, 2006
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/24/business/media/24consumer.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

Consumer Reports, the not-for-profit magazine that provides information on cars, computers and household appliances, is taking a step toward the publishing mainstream in a category that has vexed other publishers: women’s shopping magazines.

Consumers Union, which publishes Consumer Reports, will introduce ShopSmart, a shopping magazine intended for women over 30, on Aug. 1. The magazine will be published quarterly and will have an initial newsstand-only circulation of 800,000.

The move comes at a difficult time for magazines in general, which are battling flat or slipping circulation numbers, and for shopping magazines in particular. Cargo, the Cond? Nast men’s shopping magazine, and Vitals Man and Vitals Woman from Fairchild Publications all closed within the last year.
