Inquiring minds want to know

Their cars may not have wheels, but their homes often do. Or so it is said about readers of the National Enquirer and, before its makeover, Star. Yet the publisher and owners of these two titles - American Media Inc. and buyout firms Thomas H. Lee Partners LP and Evercore Partners Inc. - no longer have anything on their core demographic.

The investment vehicle they hoped would drive them to untold riches through an initial public offering has been losing its wheels too. And so their dream, once considered within easy reach of an operating team led by publishing stars David Pecker as chairman and chief executive officer and Bonnie Fuller as chief editorial director, has turned into what a discerning media banker characterizes as a "nightmare."

Recent developments confirm as much. Last November, on releasing results for its most recently reported quarter, AMI announced a 32.5% drop in operating income, to $15 million, on a 1.4% dip in sales.

RUNNING FOR COVER

When W booked Christie Brinkley, 52, for a photo shoot to appear in the magazine's September issue, the peg was presumably Brinkley's recent return to active-duty modeling - she began appearing in CoverGirl ads again last fall, as part of the brand's Advanced Radiance campaign. That the tabloids have since exposed Brinkley's husband Peter Cook's preference for Long Island teenagers has cast the spread, scheduled and shot before the scandal broke, in an entirely different light. A spokeswoman for W, which is a sister publication of WWD, declined to comment on the shoot's location, theme or whether a story would accompany the photos.

I'm looking for a room in an apartment, or a two bedroom apartment, in lower manhattan or williamsburg. I'm an career oriented but fun editorial assistant at a book publisher. I'm having a hard time with craigslist and am hoping I could bypass all that by finding someone who's sane and has similar interests. For the record, I'm a non-smoker. If you know of anything or happen to have a room opening up in august or september please email me at Julia.Felsenthal@gmail.com. My cell is (312)952-7114.
