******* About 50 staffers were affected by Teen People's folding earlier today, according to a Time Inc. spokesperson, who added that the abrupt folding of Hachette's ElleGirl earlier this year had "nothing to do" with Time Inc.'s decision to fold Teen People. One staffer unaffected, at least at this point: Zena Burns, editor of Teenpeople.com, which, like ElleGirl.com, will live on in brand-form. MORE ONLINE 2. NY SunCelebrity Titles Crowd Women's Magazines By Myrna Blyth 7/26/06 http://www.nysun.com/article/36707 While some well-established women's magazines struggle to retain their circulation, the celebrity weeklies, now selling more than 7 million copies a week, are almost as vibrant as Angelina Jolie's smile. This newly crowded magazine category includes People (the mother of them all), US Weekly, In Touch, Star, Life & Style Weekly, and the British import OK! These magazines, with cover stories about Jennifer Aniston's newest romance ("Is Vince the One?" People asked last week), sell most of their copies on the newsstands, which is highly profitable. More traditional women's magazines often have large circulations through paid subscriptions, sometimes offering their readers copies at less than $1 an issue. Some even sell readers long-term subscriptions at deeply discounted prices, such as three years for the price of one. The rationale is to maintain a large rate base of subscribers for advertisers to reach. Even so, Woman's Day, for example, just announced a 5% cut in its rate base, to 3.8 million, following a cut in circulation last year as well. The teenage magazines in more traditional formats are suffering, too.Time Inc. announced yesterday that it will fold the print edition of Teen People. Three months ago ElleGirl closed its print edition and is now web-only. But it isn't only the strength of newsstand sales that makes celebrity weeklies successful. At a time when most women's magazines are competing fiercely for advertising dollars, the celebrity weeklies appeal to teenagers and young women in their 20s, an audience that many advertisers hanker after. This is the large group of potential readers that pollsters and demographers call "the millennials." MORE ONLINE 3. WWDPut on Restriction… Magic Fingers By Sara James & Irin Carmon & Jacob Bernstein 7/26/06 http://www.wwd.com/search/article/107877?query=sara+james And then there were three. The teen magazine category shrank for the second time this year on Tuesday when Time Inc. said it would shutter the print edition of Teen People, turning the brand into a Web-only enterprise. Staffers were told at a 4 p.m. meeting, led by People Group editor Martha Nelson, People Group execs David Geithner and Paul Caine and Time Inc.'s co-chief operating officer Nora McAniff. The company's decision to suspend Teen People mirrored a move by Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S. in April to fold Ellegirl, but keep Ellegirl.com alive. The three largest remaining print teens are Seventeen, Cosmogirl and Teen Vogue. "It's not surprising they would do this," a high-level teen source said of Teen People's closure. "Their newsstand was really pink in the first half." That would make the third dip in as many periods for the title, thanks to consecutive slides in 2005, when single-copy sales were down 15.8 percent to 350,610 copies and 11.8 percent to 390,900 for the first and second halves, respectively. MAGIC FINGERS: Sometimes, things are exactly as they seem. Case in point: Jeffrey Epstein. On Tuesday, Page Six reported the enigmatic money manager was charged in Florida over the weekend with trying to get a happy ending from a masseuse. Epstein, who recently funded Radar Magazine and tried to buy New York Magazine, is often seen at events squiring two, sometimes even three, models a night. As for his private plane, one person who's spent time on it calls it "sybaritic." MORE ONLINE 4. Fashion Week DailyBig August for Lottie Oakley By Staff 7/25/06 http://www.fashionweekdaily.com/news/fullstory.sps?iNewsid=349599&itype=8486 August seems to be a very good month for Lottie Oakley. The former executive director of international fashion on Vogue's business side has been promoted to advertising director, American and European fashion. In her new title—made official on Monday—Oakley will oversee strategies for the American and international fashion business at Vogue, not to mention accessories and fur. She joins Vogue's current ad directors, Timothy R. O'Connor and Samantha M. Fennell, who handle non endemic and retail, and auto and jewelry accounts, respectively. Oakley started at Vogue in August 1997 as retail director, a position she held until August 2002, when she went to GQ as international fashion director for two years. Oakley then returned to Vogue working on the magazine's international fashion accounts in August 2004. But having new business cards printed isn't the only thing Oakley has on her list of things to-do. She'll also be sending out change-of-address cards. She and husband, Details associate publisher Marc Berger, have just purchased a two-bedroom apartment in the new Downtown by Philippe Starck building on Broad St. The couple plan to move in November. Meanwhile, the publishing masthead at Vogue has recently been shuffled. Associate publisher Erica Nevruz Bartman, who handled the beauty and non endemic accounts, is leaving the magazine to pursue her own endeavors, leaving Connie Anne Phillips as the sole associate publisher. Phillips will assume Bartman's responsibilities by taking on the beauty, jewelry, and automotive categories. "[Vogue] publisher Tom Florio has expanded her responsibilities to oversee all of the business on the ad side," said a magazine spokeswoman. JIM SHI MORE ONLINE
