******* At least yesterday, everybody loved Martha. Martha Stewart's company Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia took a giant step toward winning back the confidence of investors when it reported a surge in advertising dollars at its flagship magazine. The news in turn sent shares in the company soaring. The stock gained $1.59 per share, or 10.3 percent, to close at $16.99. The stock is down slightly on the year. Yesterday's quarterly earnings marked a significant milestone in the company's climb back from Stewart's conviction and prison sentence for lying to the feds about a stock transaction. Ad pages at "Martha Stewart Living" surged 47 percent, while its other magazine, "Everyday Food," saw a 22 percent jump. "We have a clear roadmap for growth that gives us confidence in the future of our business and in our ability to increase shareholder value," said Susan Lyne, president and CEO, in a statement. "We have successfully navigated a difficult period and are enjoying significant gains in advertising revenue and new business opportunities." MORE ONLINE

The private investors behind Trump Magazine and Poker Life are rolling the dice with an over-the-counter stock play that is expected to go off imminently. Premier Publishing Group, the publisher, so far has only buckets of red ink to show for its early efforts. For Trump, however, it's been lucrative. He was paid $120,000 each for the first two issues of the magazine. After that, he receives $135,000 per issue as well as 7.5 percent of the net profit generated by each issue starting in September. The offering, which is expected to begin trading on the OTC bulletin board as early as this week, is being done by private placement investors who had earlier invested in the company and now hope to monetize their investment. So far investors in the year-old company have gotten nothing back. The company concedes that from May 1, 2004, through March 31, 2006, it incurred a net loss of $3,898,690 on top of the accumulated deficit of $3,898,690, in an SB-2 document filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission last month. For the year ended Dec. 31, 2005, the company had revenue of only $563,848. MORE ONLINE

American Express Publishing named Julie McGowan senior VP, publisher of Travel + Leisure. McGowan, who was previously senior VP, publisher at Food & Wine, replaces Ellen Asmodeo-Giglio, who exits after 17 years with Amex Publishing to focus on her "personal endeavors and professional next steps." McGowan takes her new position Aug. 14. "Julie has proven herself to be a superstar at our company," said Ed Kelly, Amex Publishing president/CEO in announcing McGowan's new position. "When she joined Food & Wine, it was ranked third in its competitive set but Julie transformed it into today's number one advertising leader in the epicurean set. She has nearly doubled the magazine's ad pages and tripled its ad revenue by developing inventive brand platforms that have resulted in compelling opportunities for Food & Wine's partners."
