******* Time Out New York has launched a broadband video channel, Timeoutnewyork.tv, that serves as a Web counterpart to the magazine's branded video on demand channel, launched in New York on Time Warner Cable back in November of last year. The new online channel, built in conjunction with broadband technology provider Maven Networks, features 200 short video clips at launch. The online video content, just like the clips available on TV, consists of reviews of New York City restaurants, bars, museums and other attractions - often hosted by the magazine's reporters. Officials have plans to churn out new video clips each week for the site, including more time sensitive content that won't be seen on the TV channel such as weekly video blogs from several Time Out staffers. 2. WWD VANITY FASHION PLATES: Despite being infamous for frumpiness, journalists didn't do half badly on Vanity Fair's International Best Dressed list, which this September appears in the new forum of the magazine's first-ever Style issue. Page Six's Richard Johnson gets a shout-out for keeping his "offbeat Manhattan-prepster cool" while the gossip column was "under siege" in a payola scandal. Other journalists on the list include Anderson Cooper, Brian Williams, Zac Goldsmith (The Ecologist magazine), Fran Lebowitz, Vogue style director Alexandra Kotur and Tatler's Isabella Blow, and Anna Piaggi, who were both named to the category of "Fashion Originals." 3. New York Times Ashlee Simpson appeared on the July cover of Marie Claire magazine extolling the virtues of appreciating one’s body as it is — then she had a nose job. Marie Claire readers erupted in fury at what they said was Ms. Simpson’s hypocrisy and the magazine’s “cluelessness.” They wrote 1,000 letters in protest to the magazine, according to Joanna Coles, the new editor of the magazine. And she agreed with them. In the first issue (due Aug. 15) over which she exercises full editorial control, Ms. Coles gives expanded space in the letters column to readers to vent against Ms. Simpson. Ms. Coles adds in a note: “We’re dazed and confused — and disappointed — by her choice, too!” MORE ONLINE
4. The New York Times Both Nascar racing and feature films are notorious for their high levels of product placement. Now, a new film about a Nascar driver has achieved its own prominent placement in both the advertising and the editorial pages of The Sporting News magazine. Subscriber copies of the Aug. 4 issue of The Sporting News are covered by a fake wraparound cover promoting “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” from Columbia Pictures, which stars Will Ferrell as a champion Nascar driver. What is perhaps more confusing is that the real cover, found underneath the wraparound, also has a small picture of Mr. Ferrell, with the line “Ricky Bobby tells all!” Four pages of editorial content mention the movie, including a two-page article by the associate editor, Matt Crossman, about his experience of being an extra in the film, and a “week ahead in sports” item that notes the film’s Aug. 4 debut.
