Saveur Cofounder Andrews Exits For Gormet
By Keith J. Kelly

FOOD magazine pioneer Colman Andrews, one of the cofounders of Saveur, is heading to Gourmet as a writer.

"I'll be covering restaurants, but not as a reviewer. It will be what trends we are seeing, how they are changing," said Andrews, who has authored three cookbooks and served as the editor-in-chief of Saveur for 12 years.

His friends tossed him a bash last night at Barbuto, run by Jonathan Waxman. Andrews and Gourmet Editor-in-Chief Ruth Reichl go back to their days at New West magazine, when he was the food editor and Reichl worked for him.

Vanity Fair's Wolff Chronicles Times' 'Panic'
By Dylan

http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/magazines/vanity_fairs_wolff_chronicles_times_panic_41218.asp

In an article to be published in the September issue of Vanity Fair — out tomorrow — Michael Wolff paints the New York Times' current administration, always the target of the Bush administration's ire, in a "crisis of confidence."

The Times current predicament—its share price has fallen by 50 percent since 2002; almost 30 percent of its shareholders protested the company's slate of directors at the annual meeting this spring—gets closer and closer to that of the Knight Ridder papers, forced into a sale; the tribune company, publisher of the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune, locked in a more or less mortal boardroom war; and Dow Jones, with its worried family members fretting about a sale of The Wall Street Journal. the Bush people cannot be unware of this.

Wolff finds former executives to rail against Arthur Sulzberger (Editorial? [Sulzberger is] running the business side too! This wasn't supposed to happen!") and seems to anchor part of his piece of the Times' forthcoming $850 million West side digs.

Glamour Girl… Domino's Piling Up
By Irin Carmon

http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/108017

GLAMOUR GIRL: Dubbed Vogue's "Girl of the Moment" in December, former New York Observer writer Jessica Joffe evidently has moved on to Glamour (owned, liked WWD, by Cond? Nast Publications) for her next phase of fame. Glamour's September issue has Joffe's stamp on it from beginning to end, literally: The writer interviewed ensemble cover model Emmy Rossum, and on the back cover is Joffe's debut as a new face of Banana Republic.

"She ends up getting more play on the back cover than the woman she profiles gets on the front cover," joked Glamour editor in chief Cindi Leive. She said the magazine became aware of the double exposure at the last minute, and while Glamour has a policy prohibiting employees from appearing in advertisements in the magazine, the policy does not apply to Joffe, a first-time freelance contributor.

DOMINO'S PILING UP: Domino is only a year old, but it's already growing. The title has tapped Lauren Goodman, most recently of Elle Accessories and the former fashion director of the now-defunct Vitals (like Domino, once part of Cond? Nast Publications), to be its first fashion director. Domino also is recruiting a beauty editor and two new features editors to focus on the front of the book.

Cutting Out the Subscription Cards…Literally
By Brian Steinberg

For magazines, subscription cards long have been a double-edged sword. The palm-size slips of thick paper are a cheap, reliable way to win new readers. But their habit of tumbling out of magazines tends to drive people crazy.

In its latest marketing effort, Philips Electronics is paying Hearst $2 million to eliminate the cards from the September issues of four Hearst titles -- Redbook, O At Home, Weekend and House Beautiful. Each magazine will instead run a two-page Philips ad with the line "Simplicity is not having subscription cards fall out of your magazine." The ads give information about Philips-branded Web sites, created specially for the promotion, where readers can subscribe to the magazines.

The promotion is the latest in a series of ad deals the company has struck in the past year, each aimed at reinforcing Philips's marketing promise to make life easier for people. Last fall, for instance, Philips bought all the national ad time of one episode of "60 Minutes," giving some of the time back so the show could run longer news segments and fewer ad breaks.

Review of Women's Fashion Magazine's Sept.
By Steve Cohn

http://www.minonline.com/topstory.htm

Headline is a double entendre, because while Fashion Rocks has turned into a marketing bonanza for 2004 creator/Cond? Nast Media Group president (since August 2004) Richard Beckman and his staff with both the magazine and the televised music gala, it is also indicative that women's fashion has expanded far beyond the parochial world of Elle/ Harper's Bazaar/ Vogue/ W from a generation ago. Many women's magazines are fashion-endemic, and while September may not be the be-all-and-end-all, they are all seeking pieces of this growing pie. Here is an 11-year record of 16 magazines' Septembers:

Playboy to join poker game
By Mike Hughlett
8/02/06
http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/chi-0608010419aug01,1,3213245.story?ctrack=1&cset=true

Chicago-based Playboy Enterprises Inc. said Monday that it will jump into the burgeoning online poker business--though not in the United States. That's not surprising, given the U.S. Justice Department's stance that Internet-based gambling is illegal.

To prove its point, the agency sought an indictment against the head of one of the world's biggest online betting companies, BetOnSports.com. David Carruthers, former chief executive of the publicly traded British firm BetOnSports, pleaded guilty Monday in federal court in St. Louis to racketeering and fraud charges.

The two events--the crackdown on BetOnSports and Playboy's unveiling of a Web poker play--illustrate the bipolar nature of the Internet gambling business.

Doherty to sue 'Star' magazine
By Wenn

http://www.hollywood.com/news/detail/id/3538347

Former Beverly Hills, 90210 star Shannen Doherty was reduced to tears last week after seeing a tabloid magazine cover declaring she'd had drastic plastic surgery, and is planning to sue the magazine.

Star magazine featured Doherty on the cover with the headline "Extreme Makeover" and insinuated that she'd had a variety of plastic surgery procedures. She appeared on talk show The View as a guest co-host today where she lashed out at the tabloid and said she had hired a lawyer to sue the publication.

When moderator Barbara Walters asked Doherty if she'd ever had plastic surgery she replied, "No. I'm actually willing to go so far as to go sit down with whatever plastic surgeon they want to put in front of me who can inspect my face.

Ziff Davis Looking at Possible Sale

Ziff Davis, owner of PC magazine and Computer Gaming World, could sell itself in a transaction that analysts say may fetch more than $300 million.

Evercore Partners and Lehman Brothers Holdings were hired to help explore alternatives, New York-based Ziff Davis said yesterday.

Principal owner Willis Stein & Partners paid $780 million in 2000 for Ziff Davis to Japan's Softbank Corp. The publishing company has shifted its focus toward Web sites and technology enthusiast events after the Internet stole readers and advertisers and lowered its value.
