******* SINCE the death in 1990 of the legendary publisher Malcolm S. Forbes, his four sons and a daughter have sold his cherished assets here and there — his private jet, the collection of Faberg? eggs, a handwritten copy of Lincoln’s last address. The father suggested in his memoir that it was only natural and proper that his children do so, but even he might have been taken aback by the most recent divestiture. On Friday, the family sold a significant minority stake in a newly formed company, Forbes Media, which includes the 89-year-old Forbes magazine started by their grandfather, B. C. Forbes; the Forbes.com Web site; and a number of smaller media properties, to Elevation Partners, a private equity group. Malcolm Forbes, whose tastes in music ran to Scottish bagpipes, may have been even more surprised that among the new owners of the company is Bono, the singer in U2 who is one of six partners in Elevation. MAY THE BEST MAN MAG WIN: Audited figures for men's magazines for the first half of 2006 may not be out yet, but Men's Health is already crowing that its newsstand jump of 10 percent to an average of 542,092 has unseated Maxim as America's best-selling men's magazine on the newsstand. While Maxim isn't giving up its newsstand sales figures, Men's Health's sales are its best showing in over a decade and compare with average single-copy sales of 492,679 in the first half of 2005. A spokesman for Maxim said Dennis Publishing does not issue circulation numbers in advance of their release by the Audit Bureau of Circulations, which should be soon. But he did say, "We estimate that we sold 15 percent more total units in the first half of 2006 than Men's Health did and consumers spent 25 percent more of their dollars on Maxim at the newsstand than Men's Health." Maxim's newsstand price is $4.99, while Men's Health went from $3.99 to $4.50 for its January-February issue. And while that is only 10 percent more expensive, it so happens that $4.99 is 25 percent more than $3.99. For the record, Men's Health's total circulation for the January-June period, including subscriptions, rose 4.7 percent to 1,856,162 from 1,773,612. Maxim's spokesman noted that "you can't judge by average single-copy sales alone because of the different frequencies" — i.e., Maxim put out six issues in the first half of the year compared with Men's Health's five. 3. Mediaweek Our love affair with celebrity weeklies may be going the way of Christie Brinkley’s marriage and Mel Gibson’s image. The stratospheric circulation gains they enjoyed in recent years are largely leveling off, according to figures obtained by Mediaweek to be reported by the Audit Bureau of Circulations Aug. 21. Subscription sales, thanks to aggressive promotion, boosted total paid circ by respectable, if tempered, levels in the six months ended June 30 compared to last year. But growth in all-important newsstand sales was relatively tepid. This, as newcomers like American Media Inc.’s Celebrity Living, Gemstar-TV Guide International’s Inside TV, and veteran title Time Inc.'s Teen People have bit the dust. MORE ONLINE
4. The Huffington Post The following resolution was passed Friday by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) which is the leading professional body for academics in journalism and media studies. (I am a member.) It was brought to the floor of the annual convention by David Mindich of St. Michael's College, author of Tuned Out: Why Americans Under 40 Don't Follow the News (Oxford, 2005). The key passage is: "The membership of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication urges the Bush administration to abandon its anti-press policies." The resolution identifies ten troubling practices involving secrecy, propaganda and the control of information. It recognizes that there is always tension between presidents and the press. "This tension is both unavoidable and generally salutary: When each side conducts its duties with honesty and integrity, both hold the power of the other in check." MORE ONLINE
5. The New York Times Donald L. Barlett and James B. Steele, the longtime, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporters who lost their jobs at Time Inc. a few months ago, have taken the leap from mass to class and are joining Vanity Fair. The two have accepted an offer from Graydon Carter, the editor, to sign a multiyear contract, agreeing to write two articles a year. Both will have the title of contributing editor at the glossy monthly. Mr. Barlett and Mr. Steele, who linked their careers 35 years ago at The Philadelphia Inquirer, then moved on together to Time Inc., are among the most durable reporting teams in journalistic history. Their lengthy, in-depth investigations have won two Pulitzer Prizes and two National Magazine Awards. MORE ONLINE
6. Gawker Per rumors floating last week, former Teen People managing editor Lori Majewski is the new executive editor at People -- though no word on whether or not it's a permanent assignment. As of right now, she's just filling the ruby slippers of former executive editor Peter Castro, who last week was appointed managing editor of People en Espa?ol. But in the wake of Teen People's death, Majewski very well may be one of those temp-to-perm hires. MORE ONLINE 7. Valleywag The original title for BusinessWeek's cover story on Kevin Rose was originally titled "Wealth Punks," Valleywag has learned. The magazine also considered the bland "Geeks 2.0" for the cover before settling on "How this kid made $60 million in 18 months." Why did it happen? Well, the editors made a "last-minute decision," pushed by people higher up at the magazine, according to a source. Valleywag hasn't learned which specific higher-ups were gunning for the change, but the cover copy reads less like the experiential story of a Wired profile and more like a sensationalistic exaggeration to push newsrack sales.
