******* On the Web page of the New York Times Magazine this weekend, up in the top left hand corner was an extra box with a bit of content not in the week's print version. The piece, "Hezbollah's Other War" by Michael Young, opinion editor of the English-language Beirut newspaper the Daily Star, is actually set to appear in next week's issue of the magazine, but the editors obviously thought that the content was so newsworthy -- or so susceptible to being overtaken by events -- that to sit on it for another week wasn't worth it. The piece is an excellent (if necessarily thumbnail) sketch of the complicated machinations of Lebanese politics from the beginning of the country's civil war through the present, and stands as a sad lament on the current war, which seems destined to yield no clear victor -- only more violence, and more distrust. Earlier this spring, Joanna Coles jumped into Hearst president Cathy Black's airport-bound car on just a few minutes' notice, determined to show Black before she went on vacation that she had what it took to turn around Marie Claire. Black, Coles said, "wanted someone to come in and make the magazine smarter and more sophisticated," and somewhere on the way to JFK, Coles convinced Black that she was the editor to do it. With a hard-news background, just a handful of years in magazines and no experience in the fashion or beauty worlds, Coles was a surprise choice. Her unceremoniously unrenewed predecessor, Lesley Jane Seymour, had put in a decade and a half at Vogue and Glamour prior to heading Redbook, YM and eventually Marie Claire. Current Harper's Bazaar editor in chief Glenda Bailey had launched and run British and other international editions of Marie Claire for eight years before her tenure at the American edition. Coles doesn't have the track records of those editors, but she is wasting no time shaking things up. With the cover line "strong, confident and sexy" as a mantra, Coles said her demographic is a woman in a shifting world, who may no longer "need advice on asking her boss for a raise - because she may well be the boss herself." This has meant a near total redesign that includes all-black fashion and accessories, streamlined cover lines and the unlikely coup of getting Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Rudy Giuliani and John McCain to pose for a fashion spread -"MC does DC." Sounds crazy for her to give up her plumb job as Vogue executive beauty director (since November 2005) to become publisher of Radar, Maer Roshan's (ex- Talk) celebrity-cum-lifestyle magazine/Web site that is scheduled to have its third incarnation in March ( radaronline.com launches in September). "I missed fashion," says Rizzuto, who was head-deep into it as 2000-2004 Marie Claire publisher (she also led Fitness in 2004-2005), "and our premiere will be 'spring' fashion-centric. But more importantly, I was amazed by the loyalty to Maer. So many of his editors are returning. Jeff Bercovici gave up a good job at Women's Wear Daily [ Memo Pad columnist] to join. And, on the business side, ad director Anne Perton [ex- House & Garden ad director] rejoined. I told her the news, and she signed on right away. We would not have ta_ken these jobs if we did not believe in Radar's potential." Radar shutdown #1 (2004) came from lack of financing. Shutdown #2 (December 2005) came from chief financier Mort Zuckerman ( U.S. News & World Report/New York Daily News chairman) pulling out. This time, says Katherine Rizzuto, "there's more love and nurturing. We have very modest goals that will keep us in business for a long time." Thus, Radar chairman/ceo Yusef Jackson (younger son of civil rights activist/1984-1988 presidential candidate Jesse Jackson; brother is Illinois Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr.) and coo David Aimone (ex- Golf Digest) have corralled very patient investors (names not known), who, says Rizzuto, "will finally give Maer the platform to display a 'fresh approach' that currently is not out there."
