I Want My US Weekly

Jann Wenner's $300 million purchase of the other 50 percent stake in Us Weekly could be read as a sign of genius or fear, depending on whom you ask. On one hand, the celebrity weekly has become the cash cow of Wenner Media, which also includes the marginally profitable Men's Journal and the struggling Rolling Stone.

After 67 years of running photos of fashion travesties from exposed body parts to oversize hairdos on its "Dos & Don'ts" page, Glamour and Gotham Books on Sept. 7 will compile such tragedies — and advice on how to avoid them — in the "Big Book of Dos & Don'ts: Fashion Help for Every Woman," which has an initial print run of 100,000. Glamour also is launching a Web site, glamourdosanddonts.com, which includes "Dontspotting," where readers can submit their own seen-on-the-street "don'ts" to the site.

Breaking News Is Hard To Do

Cond? Nast is whipping its magazines to step up their Web presence, and a sign of future strategies for the Vogues, Portfolios and Vanity Fairs of the world may be coming from GQ. The magazine's exclusive with Abu Ghraib whistle-blower Joe Darby comes with a standard "Good Morning America" appearance today; what's new is that the magazine is simultaneously posting online the accompanying story, written by Wil S. Hylton. The posting will come roughly two weeks before the September issue of GQ containing the story hits newsstands nationally. Baby steps for the nonstop-refresh Internet age, but giant steps for the glossies.

Wenner Takes Back Us Weekly
By Katherine Q. Seelye

The Walt Disney Company is about to make a 650 percent profit on its stake in Us Weekly, selling it back to Wenner Media for $300 million after acquiring it from Wenner in 2001 for $40 million. Disney revealed the planned sale of its one-half interest in Us Weekly yesterday, almost in passing, during a conference call with financial analysts. Thomas O. Staggs, Disney's chief financial officer, said the company wanted to concentrate on its core assets and had made "an outstanding return" on its investment.

Jann Wenner, chairman of Wenner Media, had originally sought out Disney as a partner to help pay for the transition of the magazine from a monthly to a weekly — a move that has made Us Weekly one of the success stories of the magazine industry. Its circulation has reached 1.75 million, growing 7 percent in the first half of this year compared with the same period last year.

"Disney provided crucial financial, moral and public backing when a lot of people questioned the wisdom of the whole thing," Mr. Wenner said in an interview. Ad pages have been flat recently, and some in the industry have speculated that the celebrity magazine category might start to contract. "Right now it looks as though People and Us are continuing to thrive, but the category is definitely changing and it's hard to say what's going to happen," said Reed Phillips III, a managing partner of DeSilva & Phillips, a media investment banking firm.

At Cond? Nast, a hefty serving of attitude
By Lloyd Grove

Does someone in the Cond? Nast cafeteria believe that the publishing empire's corporate name is shorthand for condescending and nasty? Or is it just a puckish sense of humor - or maybe the thankless struggle to please the demanding palates of staffers for Vogue, Vanity Fair and other slick mags - that provokes all those sour responses to the comment cards posted in the Frank Gehry-designed eatery? The other day, Lowdown found the following written exchanges on an official comment board while visiting the fourth-floor cafeteria in Cond? Nast's Times Square headquarters:

"Trisha" asked for "a jelly w/no sugar added and brown rice for sushi," and went on: "Can you order more diet root beer ... and more vanilla low-cal yogurt?" The cafeteria's typed answer: "Yes we will order these things ... just as soon as we change the cafe into a Health Food Store."

Another customer requested "raspberries and blackberries @ the fruit table." The cafeteria's response: "You can sit and patiently wait for the Farmers Market."

Wired News Writer Faked Info

Wired News has removed three articles from its website after an internal investigation failed to confirm the authenticity of a source used in the stories. "Tribal Curse Haunts Launch Pad" (June 27, 2006), "NASA Boosts Heart-Monitoring Tech" (July 7, 2006) and "Don't Flush It -- Breathe It" (July 14, 2006), all by Philip Chien, relied in part on quotes and citations from Robert Ash, described in the first two stories as a "space historian" and in the last as an "aeronautical engineer and amateur space historian."

In a phone conversation with Wired News editors, Chien had identified Ash as a professor of aeronautical engineering at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Reached by phone this week, Ash said he is not a space historian and has never participated in interviews with Chien. Ash is an aeronautical engineering professor at the university and has been involved in numerous NASA projects.

Chien is a freelance space reporter who has worked for online, print and television news outlets, and recently authored a book on the Columbia space shuttle disaster. He's written seven stories for Wired News, two of them in 2004, the other five in the past few weeks.
