Memo Pad: Logging On ... Ring Around The Tabloids ... Moving On ..
By Stephanie D. Smith and Irin Carmon

http://wwd.com/issue/article/108213?page=0

LOGGING ON: Joanne Lipman's search for an experienced Web editor to spearhead the much-anticipated launch of Portfolio's Web site, set to go live next April, ended Thursday. YahooFinance veteran Chris Jones will join the business magazine Sept. 12 as managing editor, Web.

Jones spent four years at Yahoo, where he most recently was director of programming, and worked at Hot Jobs for two years prior to Yahoo's acquisition of the job-search portal. Jones is the third Portfolio hire from Yahoo, following Ari Brandt and Scott Havens, who are helping division president David Carey on the business side.

RING AROUND THE TABLOIDS: Is it the doldrums of August that are causing some celebrity weeklies to dig up old news, or a desperate effort to create another drawn-out drama ? la Brad and Angelina? Us Weekly's Aug. 21 issue claiming actors Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn are engaged ("Jen Says Yes: Vince Proposes!") caused quite a media stir, but the headline may create readers' d?j? vu. Life & Style first reported that the two were engaged in its June 26 cover story, "Yes, I'll Marry You!" Then, Us Weekly refuted Like & Style's claims in a July 3 story, "The Truth About Jen and Vince." Us Weekly did an about-face in a July 17 report entitled "Jen and Vince; Getting Married," saying the pair was, in fact, planning to get hitched.

So why didn't Us Weekly make it a cover story last month? Editor Janice Min explained: "We knew they discussed getting married in Mexico, but didn't know that there was an actual proposal." But, Min said, Us Weekly got the full scoop last week.

MOVING ON: Robert Beauchamp, former GQ executive editor and Esquire editorial fashion director, is jumping from one Departures masthead page to another. Having been men's fashion contributing editor at Departures for nearly a decade, Beauchamp will make the rare shift from editorial to business to be the magazine's first luxury market adviser.

The man himself was nonchalant about the crossover. "Separation of church and state is not as big as it used to be," stated Beauchamp, who used to run his own ad agency (which perhaps explains his cavalier attitude toward the editorial/advertising divide that even glossy magazines still claim exists). "Everyone wants a healthy magazine."

SPEAKING OF CHURCH AND STATE ...: Hearst Magazines' "30 Days of Fashion" has the advertising revenue-generating potential to do for Hearst what the blockbuster concert and television special Fashion Rocks has done for Cond? Nast, though a Hearst spokeswoman swore "the only similarities are the word 'fashion' and that they're in September."

The splashy kickoff event, which includes photography exhibit "Getting Ready: The Art of Choice," will be held in the airy Hearst Tower on Sept. 14, right in the middle of New York Fashion Week.

CosmoGirlonGirl!
By Gawker Editors

AfterEllen.com offers up a survey of CosmoGirl! with somewhat surprising results:

“Over the past few years, CosmoGirl! has subtly but steadily included stories from and about lesbian, bisexual and questioning girls, as well as coverage of LGBT issues amid the more traditional teen magazine fare of quizzes and heartthrob interviews.”

A quote from CosmoGirl! executive editor Ann Shoket sums the trend up nicely: “Gay girls are girls too. CosmoGirl! is for all girls. So we include them.”

Who Needs Reporters? Portfolio is Pretty
By Jossip Editors
8/11/06
http://www.jossip.com/gossip/portfoilio/who-needs-reporters-portfolio-is-pretty-20060811.php

Just breathe the name Portfolio and everyone in media jumps up and down like it's their freakin' quinceanera or something. Even us. (Seriously, we're jumping.) More because of the fact that Portfolio seems to actually understand this whole Internet thing.

Joanne Lipman has pulled two hotshots for her biz site: design director Robert Priest and Web editor Chris Jones. He had been working as a consultant for the publication, which is scheduled to launch in spring of 2007. And, man, are these people psyched about their artistic venture. Jones calls it "a huge opportunity to do something new, in this case something new and visually exciting that tells a story about how business is done." And Lipman couldn't agree more that Priest is the one to beautifully illustrate this story.

"Robert Priest is the Michaelangelo of magazine design," Portfolio editor in chief Joanne Lipman wrote via e-mail when asked about Priest's hiring. "He's done brilliant work on publications ranging from Esquire & GQ to H&G and Newsweek.”

Rolling Stone Rolls with Weeds' Joint Campaign
By Jossip Editors
8/10/06
http://www.jossip.com/gossip/advertising/rolling-stone-rolls-with-weeds-joint-campaign-20060810.php

After having spent a good portion of our evening last night watching the first season of Showtime's underground-ish hit Weeds on DVD, today's burst of news regarding their new advertising campaign feels somehow especially relevant. (We haven't attempted to make one of their "use your fave herb" recipes yet, but we're pretty sure the folks at Rolling Stone have.)

Ad Age reports that, for the second season of Weeds, Showtime has taken out a scent-strip advertisements in the Aug. 24 issue of Rolling Stone magazine. We think even the biggest burn-out could put two and two together to determine the "scent strip" is intended to evoke a certain tree smell - and it's not Evergreen or Palm.

"There was a lot of back and forth about the scent," said George DeBolt, VP-media, Showtime. "We wanted to have the scent be as close as possible to marijuana. It's the buzz factor, if you will."

2 Editors Resign at Web Site Linked to Journalism Review
By Katherine Q. Seelye
8/11/06
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/11/business/media/11mag.html?_r=1&ref=business&oref=slogin

The managing editor of CJRDaily.org, an online adjunct of The Columbia Journalism Review, and his deputy both quit yesterday after the dean of Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism told them he was cutting the site's budget nearly in half.

The dean, Nicholas Lemann, said in an interview that the amount of money raised for the Web site could not sustain the online staff, and he was using a portion of the magazine's discretionary money for a direct-mail campaign to try to increase subscriptions to the print magazine. The journalism review, which comes out six times a year, has a circulation of 20,000.

Mr. Lemann said he was faced with the same quandary confronting most news organizations today - how to pay for an online staff when the site is free to readers.
