Fashion Magazines Bulk Up for September
by Myrna Blyth
August 14, 2006
http://www.nysun.com/article/37856?page_no=1

The September issues of fashion magazines hit newsstands this week, thick with ads and advice on what to wear — and buy. Fashion advertising is vigorous in magazines this year. Leading the pack is Vogue with Kirsten Dunst as Marie Antoinette on the cover. Vogue, the perennial heavyweight champion, boasts a hefty 625 advertisement pages, which is not the magazine's best, but good enough to keep it the industry leader. Two other magazines that have boosted ad sales are Hachette Filipacchi's Elle and Cond? Nast's Lucky.

Elle, the American sister of the French fashion weekly, has often been an also-ran compared to Vogue and In Style, Time Inc.'s celebrity-based powerhouse. But with 367 advertisement pages, Elle's September issue — with gossip-magnet Lindsay Lohan on the cover announcing that she wants to entertain the troops abroad — is its largest issue since 1985.

Lucky, a shop-till-you-drop magalog also grows thicker this month. A favorite among younger readers, the September issue has actress Eva Mendes on the cover and 302 advertisement pages. In September 2001, its first year of publication, it had only 113.

REVEALING QUOTE: Did Heidi Klum almost reveal that "Project Runway" contestant Michael Knight was eliminated from the show before the finale in mid-October? In an interview for Life's Aug. 18 issue, the pregnant model and host of the reality series was asked to name her three favorite garments made by the contestants from each season. Replying via e-mail, Klum said her pick from the current, third season was Knight's coffee filter dress from the first episode. She wrote "he didn't make it into the top three, but the dress was beautiful, really original and as well constructed as something could be from such delicate material." Since Klum could have meant Knight didn't make it to the top three of that particular challenge or of the entire show, Life's editors checked back with Klum to clarify. The host indeed meant the former. Life executive editor Maggie Murphy said something could have gotten lost in translation. "Heidi's a pretty precise person. My instincts say she was probably talking about that episode, but I don't know that we will know for sure until the next few weeks unfold." Klum's additional responses will be posted online today at lifemagazine.com.

REVOLVING DOOR: Apparently new Maxim editor in chief Jimmy Jellinek has nothing better to do on a summer Friday in August than to get rid of six staffers, including associate editor John DeVore [NOTE FROM ED: DeVore was a senior writer.], associate editor Steve Mazzucchi, fact checker Bart Morrisroe and production editor Andrij Witiuk, who had been with the men's monthly for nine years. Jellinek is bringing in fresh blood as he puts his stamp on the title after three months at the helm. Former Page Six reporter Chris Wilson will join as deputy editor, Stuff associate editor Jeff Foss will come on board in the same role and deputy editor Seth Kelly, who also worked at Stuff under former editor Greg Gutfeld, joined Maxim two weeks ago [NOTE FROM ED: Kelly joined at the end of June.].

DISCHARGED: After almost 18 years at Newsweek, veteran foreign correspondent Joshua Hammer has been recalled from Cape Town, where he was serving as the magazine's Africa bureau chief and correspondent at large. Though Hammer had long freelanced on the side for publications such as The New Republic and The New York Times, sources say the last straw for Newsweek was a June 26 New Yorker piece on Zimbabwe he wrote while on vacation. After offering and then promptly rescinding an offer for Hammer to serve as a New York-based online correspondent, Newsweek is said to have fired Hammer for "gross misconduct," though there have been no allegations made.

Ease of Alteration Creates Woes for Picture Editors
by Maria Aspan
August 14, 2006
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/14/technology/14photoshop.html

The recent discovery that a Lebanese freelance photographer, Adnan Hajj, had manipulated pictures he took for Reuters has raised questions about the standards of photojournalism at a time of widespread digital photography.

The incident also increased pressure on news photo editors, who select and edit thousands of photographs under deadline each day, to detect digital alterations.

“The Soviets had to have a whole department to doctor pictures,” said David Friend, an editor at Vanity Fair and a former director of photography for Life magazine. “Now all it takes is a swipe of a mouse, and the kid down the street can add smoke and mirrors to everything.”

If a Magazine’s List Doubles in Size, Is That Inflation?
by Julie Bosman
August 14, 2006
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/14/business/media/14list.html

Magazines used to be satisfied with making lists of 50. People had its top-selling 50 Most Beautiful People issue. Vanity Fair picked 50 power players for its annual New Establishment, a list of people who were rarely new and usually were well established.

Now the paltry list of 50 has given way to 100, the number atop this year’s People’s Most Beautiful People, Vanity Fair’s New Establishment, the annual Time 100, the Maxim Hot 100 and the new Esquire 100. This week’s issue of The Los Angeles Times magazine featured its first “West 100,” a list of the 100 most powerful people in Southern California.

If the reason for the switch is typical one-upmanship, no one is admitting it. Vanity Fair is rebranding its list “the New Establishment: VF 100” and giving it “a broader, more global reach,” said Beth Kseniak, a spokeswoman for the magazine.

‘Consumer Reports' has a new, unbiased sister magazine for shoppers
by Jayne O’Donnell
August 14, 2006
http://www.usatoday.com/printedition/money/20060814/shopmags.art.htm

ShopSmart, the new shopping magazine for women, hit newsstands this month — with a twist.

Like sister publication Consumer Reports, but unlike its competitors, ShopSmart accepts no advertising or free samples from companies. Ads and sample freebies are two staples of traditional women's and shopping magazines. But ShopSmart's editor-in-chief says those factors may unduly influence the magazines' coverage.

The editor-in-chief, Lisa Lee Freeman, who's worked for several women's magazines, says, “The difference is we're 100% unbiased.”

July: A great month for business magazines
by Chris Roush
August 12, 2006
http://weblogs.jomc.unc.edu/talkingbiznews/?p=1255

For those of you who have been paying attention, you’ll remember that Talking Biz News wrote about a month ago about how many of the business magazines — including BusinessWeek, Business 2.0 and Money — had incredibly an incredibly bad June in terms of ad sales, according to data from the Magazine Publishers of America.

Well, July was much better. In fact, most business magazines saw double-digit increases in ad sales, which only Kiplinger’s Personal Finance and Money showing declines for July.

The big winner for the month was Wired, which increased its ad sales nearly 49 percent to $6.1 million for July.

Who Should Play Toby Young's Graydon Carter?
August 14, 2006
http://www.jossip.com/gossip/graydon-carter/who-should-play-toby-youngs-graydon-carter-20060814.php

When we heard that ex- Vanity Fair writer Toby Young's How to Lose Friends and Alienate People was going to be made into the next "life inside Conde" film, we were overjoyed. And today we find out that Simon Pegg of Shaun of the Dead will play Toby Young's character. But an actor to play "Clayton Harding," (the Graydon Carter based editor in chief of the VF based Sharps) has yet to be found.
