******* Sibling Rivalry When a baby joins a family, older children often become jealous of the attention showered on the newborn. A similar phenomenon may be brewing among Cond? Nast's top ranks. Over its year-and-eight-month development, Portfolio no doubt will receive as much money, manpower and corporate cuddling as it needs to thrive and succeed. Reports have said the company will pour $100 million into its launch, although Cond? Nast has not confirmed that number. MORE ONLINE Beauty and the Bidet Ian Schrager's recently reborn Gramercy Park Hotel is garnering generally positive reviews, and Allure readers checking in certainly will be pleased when they see the bathrooms. Each one offers products handpicked by the editors of the beauty magazine. Beauty editors and editor in chief Linda Wells came up with a kit given at checkout that includes toiletries from Hamadi, Hakansson and Mario Badescu, to name a few. MORE ONLINE Fashionable Festival Attendees at the upcoming New Yorker Festival will get up close and personal with designers Zac Posen and Manolo Blahnik during the Oct. 6 to 8 event. New Yorker staff writer Michael Specter will interview Blahnik on Oct. 7 at the Supper Club. Specter, who profiled designers Valentino and Miuccia Prada for the weekly in the last two years, penned a profile of Blahnik in 2000. On Oct. 8, staff writer Judith Thurman will guide a group of 20 or so on a tour of Posen's TriBeCa studio, where models will showcase some of his designs. The fashionable events are two of 50 panels, lectures, demonstrations and music performances that will take place during the three-day soiree. For those searching for a jiggier affair, the music critic Sasha Frere-Jones will host a dance party at T New York on Oct. 6 with music spun by DJ Michael Mayer.

With its September issue, music magazine Spin will increase its trim size from 8-by-10 inches to 9-by-11 inches. Publisher Malcolm Campbell called the move "the single most important thing we've changed since taking over the magazine," enabling the 21-year-old monthly to include more photography and to stand out on newsstands. Other changes include a new column, "The Spin Mix: Songs You Need to Download Now." It also will be printed on recycled paper stock. Spin's circ in the last half of 2005 fell 5.3 percent to 540,901 copies, with both subs and newsstand down year-over-year, reports the Audit Bureau of Circulations. In February, San Francisco-based McEvoy Group and Hartle Media bought the struggling title from Vibe/Spin Ventures for less than $5 million. Nine years ago, Vibe laid out $42 million to acquire the title from founder Bob Guccione Jr.

Send a Best Wishes card to Hallmark for its next venture. The company has branched out from greeting cards, chocolates and a television channel to a new women's lifestyle publication called Hallmark Magazine. The bimonthly magazine from the Hallmark Publishing subsidiary will compete with O: The Oprah Magazine and Martha Stewart Living. "Hallmark is about making emotional connections and inspiring and renewing yourself," said Carol Boggs, publisher of Hallmark Magazine, New York. "It is not a how-to book, but a why-to book." The targeted readership is the 2.2 million mothers whose median age is 43 and median household income is $77,871. The first issue hits newsstands Aug. 22 in time for the fourth quarter, the most important quarter to the Hallmark parent in Kansas City, MO. Editorial will focus on food and entertaining, relationships, culture home, crafts and beauty and wellness. The complementing Web site at www.hallmarkmagazine.com will contain separate editorial content and advertising. "We want women to connect with themselves and their loved ones," Ms. Boggs said. "We don't want them to be someone else or have stress, but rather we want them to be real." MORE ONLINE

When Ruth Reichl took over the editorship of Gourmet magazine in 1999, she had made her name as a critic and a memoirist. Her debut issue featured pieces by Spalding Gray and Pat Conroy, part of a push toward a more literary-minded Gourmet. “The response from readers was ‘Don’t forget the recipes,’” Ms. Reichl said. But Ms. Reichl has carved out a place for high-end food writing in Gourmet—or rather, not necessarily in Gourmet. The August 2006 issue is bagged with a separate publication: a 100-page, perfect-bound, 6 3?4-by-9 literary supplement. The main issue’s cover features a close-up photo of a raspberry crumble tart, with cover lines promoting “Frozen Strawberry Margarita Pie” and “Spicy Pork Chops,” among other things. The bonus issue presents the Gourmet banner in white, against a white wall, overlooking a table with a bare white rumpled tablecloth and three little glasses of water. One glass has a tiny sprig of white flowers in it. MORE ONLINE
