PROMISED LAND?: Roman Polanski isn't alone. The film director who sued Vanity Fair for libel in London last year — and won — seems to be part of a growing trend. Celebrities are increasingly filing their libel suits in the U.K., where it's easier to win, according to a recent report by London legal publishers Sweet & Maxwell.

"Our libel laws are much more favorable to claimants," said Gideon Benaim, partner at media law specialist Schillings in London. "In the U.K., you do not have to prove malice, as you do in America. The right to freedom of expression is enshrined in the U.S. Constitution, whereas here the right is more evenly balanced with the individual's right to their reputation."

Kate Hudson and Britney Spears have won libel actions against the U.K. Enquirer, the British edition of America's National Enquirer. Although the circulation of the tabloid's British edition is far smaller than that of its U.S. sister, Hudson still chose to file suit. Hudson's suit was over a headline that read: "Goldie Tells Kate: Eat Something," which implied Hudson had an eating disorder. Spears' suit was over the paper's allegations that her marriage to Kevin Federline was over.

Mother Jones Names Co-Editors-In-Chief

http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/magazines/mother_jones_names_coeditorsinchief_42156.asp

Following the abrupt exit of editor-in-chief Russ Rymer, Mother Jones has named a pair of editors to take on the post: senior editor Monika Bauerlein and deputy editor Clara Jeffery.

Bauerlien's statement: "There's never been a more critical time for the kind of journalism that Mother Jones practices. Our focus on reporting and fact-checking rather than opinion-slinging can serve as an antidote to deception."

Time Warner Tests China Curb On Magazines

BEIJING -- A Chinese magazine featuring content from Time Warner Inc.'s Sports Illustrated will start hitting newsstands today, as China's interest in sports intensifies.

But in China's uncertain regulatory environment for foreign publications, and amid its preparations for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the magazine could be headed for either a foul or a slam dunk.

Technically, all Chinese periodicals are published by the government, which is wary of both foreign content and competition from foreign media businesses. Last fall, China's General Administration of Press and Publication, or GAPP, placed a moratorium on new magazines in fields other than science and technology that are published in China under "copyright cooperation" deals between foreign-owned publishers and the government.

Off the Record

On Aug. 11, Greg Lindsay, a freelance writer and editor, opened an envelope from the attorneys representing Absolute Publishing USA Inc., and was pleasantly surprised to find a check for $954.70.

Absolute, a luxury magazine aimed at Manhattan’s elite, had been shuttered by the company this past February, and Mr. Lindsay was one of many contributors who had not been paid for his work.

“I literally went to the bank and cashed it immediately,” said Mr. Lindsay, who had written an unpublished piece on fractional yacht ownership, “before they changed their minds.”

New Hearst Tower Has The Troops, But Not The Generals
By Steve Cohn
8/14/06
http://www.minonline.com/topstory.htm

There is a wonderful esprit de corps at just-opened 300 West 57th--the skyscraper uniquely "carved inside" Hearst Corp.'s 77-year-old New York landmark--with such amenities as a gym and an atrium/cafeteria that is the size of several football fields. Not yet sharing it are corporate ceo (since June 2002) Vic Ganzi, Hearst Magazines president (since November 1995) Cathie Black, HM senior vp/chief marketing officer (since October 1997) Michael Clinton, and other top brass because the executives' 43rd floor will not be ready for occupancy until next week. We're entering "bottom's up"! is the company line, which is certainly not how Donald Trump would do it, but in a culture that the late William Randolph Hearst would find hard to recognize, the "suits" are last. For now, they remain temporarily headquartered (since 2003) in offices at 1345 Avenue of the Americas.

In Comeback, Cracked Vows Crass Comedy
By Michael P. Regan
8/14/06
http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/060814/cracked_is_back.html

The story of how the crass comics magazine Cracked was brought back to life begins, of all places, at a white-shoe law firm in New York.

A pudgy young lawyer named Monty Sarhan had been giving life to the dreams of Internet entrepreneurs by helping them with finance deals when he caught the entrepreneurial bug himself. He decided to leave the legal profession and "go for the brass ring" by acquiring a media company.

He found that brass ring in the form of Cracked, the juvenile comics rag known for its bathroom humor that had always played second fiddle to Mad Magazine as the top time waster in the nation's study halls. Even he wasn't convinced it was a good idea at first when a friend suggested he consider buying Cracked.
