******* Fair Change Vanity Fair finally has its new publisher. After months of speculation over whether Alan Katz would be able to hang onto his job as the magazine's ad pages formed the negative axis to its newsstand sales, Cond? Nast Publications showed him the door Wednesday and replaced him with Edward Menicheschi, who has been president of WWD Media Worldwide since 2001. A dapper swagger and a Rolodex packed with fashion and entertainment contacts helped Menicheschi, 47, snag the job of vice president and VF publisher, according to Cond? Nast chief executive officer Chuck Townsend. MORE ONLINE Fresh Scent As T: The New York Times Style Magazine broadens its beauty coverage, the 14-times-a-year supplement has signed its first regular perfume critic. Chandler Burr, author of the book, "The Emperor of Scent: A True Story of Perfume and Obsession," will pen a regular column, "Scent Strip," beginning with the Aug. 27 women's fashion issue. Burr has been a contributor to the magazine for the past year and also has written about fragrance for Food + Wine and The New Yorker. T editor Stefano Tonchi said Burr brings a unique intelligence to the topic: "He deals with the world of fragrances in a way that no one else has done before by contextualizing the historical roots and social implications." In addition to features, "Scent Strip" will review both new and classic fragrances, and, no doubt, help further drive beauty advertising. T will move to a 16-times-a-year frequency next year as it adds an extra T: Beauty issue in April and a T: Travel issue to its lineup.
2. New York Post
Vanity Fair Publisher Alan Katz was dumped by Cond? Nast yesterday, less than a month after the magazine's star Editor Graydon Carter told The Post he had "complete confidence" in him. Last month, insiders at the company were buzzing about a simmering feud between Carter and Katz. Yesterday, though, the word inside Cond? Nast was that the decision was purely business and not driven by the magazine's high-profile editor. "This didn't have anything to do with personalities, it was a management decision," one insider said. "If there was something between Carter and Katz, it was frustration but not friction." That frustration was primarily over Katz's apparent inability to sell ads despite Vanity Fair's 16 percent pop in single-copy sales during the first half of 2006. Through June, according to the recently released numbers from the Publishers Information Bureau, ad pages plunged 15.3 percent to 793.2.
3. New York Times
Cond? Nast, the publishing company, removed Alan Katz as the publisher of Vanity Fair yesterday and replaced him with Edward Menicheschi, president of WWD Media Worldwide and a man much more to the liking of Graydon Carter, the magazine’s editor. Mr. Katz had been in the job less than a year, during which the magazine’s advertising took a downturn. People at the magazine said that he and Mr. Carter had been unable to overcome personality differences and never established a working relationship. “It was just not a great fit,” Charles H. Townsend, president and chief executive of Cond? Nast Publications, said yesterday in an interview. Mr. Townsend said that while Mr. Carter did not have veto power over his choice of publisher, “I have a close relationship with Graydon, and this has been a point of serious discussion between Graydon and I for some time, and we arrived at Edward in a mutual fashion.’’ MORE ONLINE
