1. NY Times
The magazine, which is owned by Time Inc., a unit of Time Warner, hopes to draw more advertisers who want to reach consumers as they begin their weekend shopping. Much the same philosophy guided The Wall Street Journal last year when it began a Saturday edition. The decision may put pressure on Time's competitors - Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report - to consider similar moves. When the change takes place, some time before the end of the year, Time will be available on the newsstands on Friday and will reach 85 percent of its subscribers on Saturday. The magazine is still trying to determine when it will go to press. MORE ONLINE

Following its launch in 2001, many industry critics were skeptical about the validity of news aggregator, The Week hitting an overcrowded market already struggling to compete with the power of the Internet. Up against heavyweight competitors like Time, Atlantic Monthly and The New Yorker, the Dennis Publishing title needed to find its editorial niche that would bring readers coming back for more. But The Week has proved critics wrong by increasing its circulation each year since its launch. The initial rate base of 100,000 grew to 150,000 by 2003 and upward to 200,000 in 2004. After rising to 300,000 in 2005, the publication again upped it to 400,000, which has been exceeded according to the latest ABC FAS FAX report (to be released Aug. 21), which reports The Week's paid circ to be 429,401. "Growth was driven by the connection readers make with our magazine," says Steven Kotok, business and circulation director for The Week. "They renew their subscriptions at a high rate and because we know they will stick around for a long time as paying subscribers, we can invest more in reaching out to them through direct mail and other sources." In fact, 99 percent of the magazine's readers are subscribers. MORE ONLINE

A REAL PARTY POOPER FOR ANNA: ANNA Wintour, you're fired! Cond? Nast insiders say the Vogue editrix's celebrated interior-designer-cum-party- planner, David Monn, who took over the design of the Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from Robert Isabel two years ago, told Wintour he was dumping her as a client in a fit of pique earlier this week. "David was very angry," tattles our source. "He worked very hard to create the gala last May, and it looked beautiful. But then Vogue covered the event in the July issue and made no mention of him whatsoever. They mentioned all of the Vogue staffers who were there - but not him. He was livid." MORE ONLINE NEW LOOK AT THE NEW YORKER: THE formerly funky "reception area" of The New Yorker is undergoing a makeover. The space on the 20th floor of Cond? Nast headquarters at 4 Times Square was long used as an art gallery and party pad by veteran staffer C.S. Ledbetter III, whose duties range from answering phones to reading unsolicited manuscripts. But last January, Editor-in-Chief David Remnick had the art taken down from the walls, which today will finally be redecorated with framed New Yorker covers. "Considering what went on, Remnick showed an amazing amount of re straint," a former staffer tells us. MORE ONLINE

PICKING UP THE PIECES: James Frey, author of the best-selling memoir "A Million Little Pieces" that turned out to be partially fiction, may not be able to get a spot on Oprah's Book Club again, but BlackBook magazine is happy to take him. The downtown style and culture monthly has commissioned a piece from Frey for its November issue, which is being guest-edited by Bill Powers, the novelist and former contributor to The New York Times Style section. (He's also the husband of fashion designer Cynthia Rowley.) "It's the first thing he's done since the whole Oprah thing," said Powers. "He wrote a piece about Alex Soth, who shot Maggie Gyllenhaal for the cover. It's an appreciation, how he got into his work. We saw him at the Terry Richardson opening last week and that's when we solidified it. He collects Alex's stuff." MORE ONLINE ROLLING IN: It may have taken a while, but when Cond? Nast's patience wears out, it wears out fast - just look at Vanity Fair, where Alan Katz wasn't the only ad person to depart the title in the wake of Edward Menicheschi's appointment as its vice president and publisher. Ginger Sutton, associate publisher for advertising, and Renee Lewin, associate publisher, creative services and marketing, also have left. A Vanity Fair spokeswoman declined to say Thursday whether they were fired or left on their own accord, but sources said they were asked to leave. The spokeswoman said Lewin's and Sutton's departures are part of Menicheschi's transition toward building the strongest team possible in advertising, adding she wasn't sure if Lewin and Sutton will continue with Cond? Nast Publications. MORE ONLINE MONDAY BECOMES FRIDAY: Time magazine is tired of starting the week. Beginning in January, subscribers to the newsweekly will receive their issues on Fridays instead of Mondays. "The new Friday on-sale date gives advertisers a tremendous opportunity to convey their messages to Time's 27 million readers before the weekend, when consumers do the large majority of purchasing," said Ed McCarrick, Time's vice president and worldwide publisher. A Time spokeswoman said that starting next year, the issue will close late on Wednesday - meaning the staff's 3 a.m. shifts will now be in the middle of the week instead of at the end. She said Time will reveal more changes in the coming months, but declined to provide details. MORE ONLINE
5. BusinessWeek
Time Magazine to change its publishing schedule to hit newsstands on Fridays starting next year. Sounds familiar to BusinessWeek, at least; we come out on Friday too. There's just one thing. In the company release, Time President and Worldwide Publisher Ed McCarrick offers this as one reason for the switch: "The new Friday on-sale date gives advertisers a tremendous opportunity to convey their messages to TIME's 27 million readers before the weekend, when consumers do the large majority of purchasing." Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this more or less the exact same rationale Time Inc. had for re-resuscitating Life magazine in 2004 as a Friday newspaper supplement? (Answer: Yes. From a December 2004 piece by Matt Flamm in Crain's New York Business: ``One of the most compelling aspects to advertisers is you're reaching people on a Friday, when they're open to being influenced,'' says Life President Andrew Blau. ``By Sunday, you've missed out on a good 36 hours of the weekend.'' ) MORE ONLINE
