Making the Numbers

Have rate base offenders finally cleaned up their acts? At first glance, 20 or so magazines missed rate base in the first half of 2006, according to numbers released Monday by the Audit Bureau of Circulations, compared with 35 in the December 2005 reporting period. The fashion crowd all made their published rate bases. Among the bigger titles that missed: Time4 Media's Golf; Hachette Filipacchi Media's Home and defunct Elle Girl and Bauer teen titles J-14 and Twist. But many titles that missed their rate bases in the past — TV Guide, Playboy and Spin, for example — delivered on their circulation guarantees this spring. In 2005, Playboy, Spin, TV Guide, Ebony and Discover were among those that missed their respective rate bases during the June or December reports. Since then, each title lowered its rate base in anticipation of the first-half 2006 statement and each made their rate bases during the first half.

Home Depot

Could This Old House be wooed from Time4 Media's comfy homestead? Sources close to the magazine say Time Inc. has been approached by a handful of buyers interested in the entity, including E.W. Scripps, home of cable networks HGTV, The Food Network and the Do-It-Yourself Network. But according to sources familiar with the title, Time Inc. refuses to let go. A Time Inc. spokeswoman underplayed the pursuit, saying, "Generally we have a lot of different money people and venture capital people trying to pick off bits and pieces [of the company]."

American newsstands sold fewer magazines in the first half of 2006 compared with the period a year ago, as some markets were saturated with too many offerings and others had to compete with the Web. Newsstand sales of magazines fell more than 4 percent, to about 48.7 million copies, in the first half of 2006, according to preliminary figures provided by magazine publishers to the Audit Bureau of Circulations. Among domestic newsweeklies, Time magazine reported the biggest fall in newsstand sales, a drop of 24 percent.

What Time magazine's new publication date means
By Jack Shafer

Who among us has leafed through his copy of Time magazine and then raged over the fact that it comes out on Monday when he'd rather get it on Friday for consumption during his leisurely weekend? Not I.

So, Time's announcement that, come January 2007, it's breaking from its Monday pub date, which it shares with Newsweek, for Friday didn't make me cheer. It did, however, cause me to wonder whether this means Time will be coming out three days before Newsweek or four days after.

It's not a Zen koan. Synchronized on the same pub date and edited in the same city, Time and Newsweek have long defined themselves in terms of one another, battling each other for bragging rights the way newspapers did back in the The Front Page days. Both culled the same seven days for news—Saturday to Saturday—and hunted editorial rabbits they could pull out of their hats to upstage the other. If you spend any time with Time and Newsweek staffers, you find them using the same language to brag about their magazine's "obvious" editorial superiority.

New Mags Slow to Roll Out
By Tony Case

Where are the new magazines? Following a flurry of major launches last year--among them, Cond? Nast's Domino, Cookie and Men's Vogue, Rodale's Women’s Health, Hearst Magazines' Quick & Simple and Weekend, and Northern and Shell's British import OK!--publishers have put the brakes on developing new titles, focusing instead on growing their established brands.

A handful of high-profile startups that have hit the market this year include Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia’s Blueprint, Disney Publishing’s Wondertime and Hachette Filipacchi Media’s French import Shock. On the launchpad is Cond? Nast’s business title Portfolio, slated for next April. Otherwise, startups are few and far between.

Samir Husni, the University of Mississippi journalism professor who tracks new magazines, confirmed there are far fewer launches this year than last. Even the number of startups in 2005, considered an active launch year, “declined dramatically” from the previous year, he said. “The numbers are going down and down and down.”

Newsstand Slide Still Bedevils Mag Publishers

Magazine readers appear to be tiring of everywoman Oprah. After grabbing readers at a no-end-in-sight pace, O, The Oprah Magazine, the women's lifestyle title from Hearst Magazines and Oprah Winfrey's Harpo, is losing steam, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations FAS-FAX report out today.

The magazine, featuring the talk show queen's grinning visage on every cover, lost a bruising 19.5 percent of its newsstand sales in the six months ended June 30, 2006, with subscriptions falling 4.7 percent. Overall paid/verified circ dropped 10.9 percent to 2,336,426. (This is the first FAS-FAX to include verified circ, which encompasses copies distributed in public places such as hotels and doctors offices. For this reporting period, combined paid/verified circ is used to measure against paid circ for first-half 2005; rate base is the combination of paid/verified circ.)

A Hearst spokeswoman attributed O's falloff to comparisons against especially strong numbers a year ago. In fact, in the first half of 2005, newsstand sales jumped 20 percent. But in that same period, subscriptions, accounting for most of the magazine's circ, lost 15.7 percent, driving overall circ down 3.6 percent.
