1. New York Post
Mark Whitaker, editor of the No. 2 news magazine since 1998, will move upstairs and hand the reins to Jon Meacham, currently the managing editor. That will put Meacham in charge of day-to-day operations. Not clear is exactly what role Whitaker will play. But he is expected to stay with Newsweek, possibly working on some broader strategic job with the magazine and its parent, the Washington Post Company, which also owns Slate and Budget Travel. Katie Couric slimmed down in the blink of a CBS eye. Tiffany Network officials admitted yesterday that an airbrushed photo making the bubbly broadcaster appear several dress sizes smaller appeared in its promotional magazine "Watch!" The incoming "CBS Evening News" anchor said she didn't know about the digitally doctored photo until the September issue of the quarterly glossy landed on her desk. "I liked the first picture better because there's more of me to love," the 49-year-old former NBC "Today" show host said, laughing off the manipulated publicity shot. MORE ONLINE

Ever since its disastrous 2000 merger with America Online, Time Warner has been playing defense. Outside agitators like Carl Icahn have called on the media behemoth to sell or spin off units that generate cash reliably but don't offer much in the way of growth, notably AOL and the company's vast cable holdings. CEO Richard Parsons, refusing to budge from the company's conglomeration strategy, has politely demurred. But recent events suggest that Icahn and the professional noodges have focused on the wrong corporate assets. What if Time Warner sold off Time Inc., the company's mammoth magazine business? Home to such powerhouses as Time, Sports Illustrated, People, Fortune, and InStyle, Time Inc. has always been regarded as a corporate crown jewel and probably America's greatest magazine publisher. But, while I can't claim inside knowledge, there are signs that the empire founded by Henry Luce—which began in 1923 as just a single magazine, Time—isn't exactly pinning its future on the periodicals business. Time Warner is composed of five broad units, in descending order of size: cable, networks, filmed entertainment, AOL, and publishing. In a few of these units, the company has recently made bold long-term investments. The cable unit recently spent several billion dollars to acquire the assets and subscribers of bankrupt Adelphia. In early August, AOL announced it would offer free subscriptions to broadband users, sacrificing short-term cash flow from the dwindling core of dial-up customers in favor of potentially larger advertising revenues. Meanwhile, the networks business (TNT, HBO, etc.) in May spent $735 million to buy the half of CourtTV it didn't already own. MORE ONLINE

Teen Vogue's December issue is going to be double the fun: sources say Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen recently sat for two different December covers of the Cond? Nast teen title. Though the twins, who starred in the Badgley Mischka ad campaign this past spring, are rarely apart, the two definitely know how to stand on their own. Ashley made a splash on the July 2005 cover of Harper's Bazaar, setting the bar for seeing the pair in singular form. Mary Kate soon followed suit on the cover of W this past January, and will grace the cover of Paper magazine's December issue as well, as part of a story with fellow Factory Girl castmate and boho pioneer Sienna Miller. Though Mary Kate interned with Annie Leibovitz, it's highly unlikely that the famed shutterbug shot the twins for Teen Vogue. A spokeswoman for the magazine had no comment. MORE ONLINE

FAMILY MATTERS: Joanne Lipman has snagged another writer from her old stomping grounds. The latest defect from The Wall Street Journal to Cond? Nast's Portfolio is Jesse Eisinger, husband of WSJ media reporter Sarah Ellison. Eisinger, who wrote the Ahead of the Tape column on the Journal's front page and created its Long and Short business commentary column, will join the Cond? Nast new business magazine as senior writer on Oct. 9. But will Eisinger's gig at Portfolio be a conflict of interest for Ellison's media beat at the Journal? Sources say the Journal will broach whether Ellison will continue to cover Portfolio or if someone else will cover the title on a case-by-case basis, but it should not hinder her ability to do a broader trend piece or a roundup that happens to mention Portfolio in passing. The marital ties to Portfolio should at least provide a nice tap into happenings at 4 Times Square, even if it's just a heads-up on the cafeteria's specials. A Wall Street Journal representative declined to comment on the potential conflict and Eisinger and editor Lipman were unavailable for comment. While at the Journal, Eisinger also spent two years in London writing the Heard in Europe column. Prior to the Journal, he covered pharmaceuticals and biotech for TheStreet.com and Dow Jones. MORE ONLINE NEW EPISODES: Move over, "Project Runway." Cosmogirl is taking a page from the TV show by starting its first teen magazine online series. The 11-part series of two- to three-minute "Webisodes" will give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at its inaugural "Born to Lead" Design Search, a project involving the magazine and the Fashion Institute of Technology that next month will award a budding FIT graduate with a $10,000 grant from Macy's. Vice president and publisher Kristine Welker said that, in addition to receiving the grant, the winning designer will partner with Necessary Objects, a women's designer in SoHo, to produce a holiday fashion collection that will be sold in at least 20 Macy's locations. The winner will be announced at a Sept. 13 event in Bryant Park during New York Fashion Week. The four finalists, Adam Andrascik, Stephanie Wasyl, Carol Montoya and Goeun Cho, were chosen from a group of 90 graduating seniors and were announced last month at the FIT graduate fashion show after party.
