For Me was conceived to compete for the 25- to 35-year-old crowd, where it was believed there was a room in the market for a mass-appeal title. But its newsstand-centric business model proved its undoing. Company President-CEO Jack Kliger told staff today that newsstand sales, which have been off since February, were too soft to continue the publication. Its October issue will be its last. Coincidentally, For Me was Hachette's first launch after Elle Girl; it now becomes Hachette's first shut-down since the company closed Elle Girl's print edition earlier this year. MORE ONLINE

Just in: Announcement from Jack Kliger, President & CEO, Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S. I am sorry to announce that following the October 2006 issue, the company will discontinue the publication of For Me magazine, a monthly women's lifestyle magazine which was launched in Spring 2005. It is always a very difficult decision to close a magazine. When we launched For Me a little over a year ago, we thought that there was a market for a young woman's lifestyle magazine which was not focused on gossip. Because of the competitive environment at retail check out, the magazine has not received the visibility necessary to generate the level of sales that we need to support our business plan. Get out your umbrellas, kids, because the gossip really is starting to pour in. Of course all the well heeled, well connected folks are just now getting back from the beach to sit down and dish all their dirt. Hence, we just get ahold of this juicy bit which involves Vanity Fair. Even better, it We hear from a pretty well placed source that Graydon Carter is going to extremely great lengths to protect his Suri photos. Even placing armed guards outside the printer, and forcing everyone who works there to sign a confidentiality agreement that they won't let a single Suri pic slip before the cover hits stands. FOR ME?: Seems like publishers are celebrating Labor Day by relieving some editors from labor for more than a weekend. Hachette said Thursday the October issue of the low-cost women's monthly For Me will be its last. Hachette tested the twentysomething women's service title in late 2004 to take on competitors Time Inc.'s All You and Bauer Publishing's First for Women and greenlighted the magazine in spring 2005. But For Me, according to one insider, always had the underdog complex: "We were designed to be a low-cost title, not designed to be a magazine they were going to put a lot of money into." The magazine, which cost $1.95 on newsstands, shared a number of resources with sister title Women's Day in Hachette's Women's Service Group and had only hired one staffer since its launch. According to sources close to the title, For Me had not renewed its contract with its public relations firm Stanton Crenshaw. Another sign of trouble could have been the departure of publisher Ellen Abramowitz, who left the company a month ago to join Avon. Coincidentally, Hachette decided against a stateside launch of its U.K. women's magazine Red, which it tested in the U.S. in April 2005. MORE ONLINE REVOLVING DOOR: Mary Alice Stephenson has a new gig. The former contributing fashion editor at Harper's Bazaar has joined Spin magazine as a creative consultant to help craft its look following the departure of editor in chief Andy Pemberton. The stylist had been working on various TV projects, and earlier this year, had hoped one of them might air on ABC as soon as this summer, but it did not. Meanwhile, Vogue, Men's Vogue and Vanity Fair all have tapped some new sales talent. Michael Provus, publisher at Giant magazine, is Vanity Fair's new advertising director. Provus, who will start on Sept. 14, replaces David Wade, who left the magazine a month ago, according to a Vanity Fair spokeswoman. Laura McEwen has been named advertising director at Vogue in a newly created position in charge of the magazine's beauty category, while Men's Vogue has added Louis Coletti as international fashion director and Nancy Berger as retail and grooming director. Just call him the male Martha Stewart. After launching an affordable department store line and an amicable talk show, Isaac Mizrahi now takes on the magazine business with Isaac's Style Book. The biannual title is edited by Erica Kawalek, with creative direction by Peter Buchanan Smith, who holds the same position at Paper (and a Grammy Award for designing the cover art for Wilco's A Ghost Is Born). Included in the first issue of Isaac's Style Book are an essay on making your own jeans and an article on the perils of dinner parties. The magazine also has plenty of fashion features, including a behind-the-scenes look at Isaac's new collection, and a feature called "Hairography," where retailer Linda Dresner chronicles her life in coifs. IT'S amazing how fast you can race up the editorial ladder at Vanity Fair if you have a socially prominent last name - and woe to those who don't. lexis Bryan - daughter of Shelby Bryan, who dates Vogue editrix Anna Wintour - is a mere 27 years old and was hired two years ago as a lowly intern. Yet she was recently named "executive fashion editor," high-stepping over several others who have plebian last names. After seething for a month, the others, like hard-working Christine Hahn, who quit yesterday, have seen the light. According to a VF insider who's not in the fashion department, they "realized they aren't going anywhere unless they marry someone on the social register" and are now seeking employment elsewhere.
