******* Former Teen People chief Lori Majewski – out of a job when Time Inc. closed the mag in July – is not heading over to the executive editor slot at People, as many Time Inc. insiders (and us) suggested. Rather, the former Us Weekly exec ed has just been named Entertainment Weekly's executive editor. Which means she's back from her European getaway and, true to form, lands stateside with a huge announcement. Time Inc. chief John Huey's memo, after the jump. ##### September 1, 2006 To: Time Inc. Employees From: John Huey Re: Staff Announcement I am pleased to announce, on the recommendation of EW managing editor Rick Tetzeli, that Lori Majewski has been named an executive editor of Entertainment Weekly. Lori begins her new position on September 11. MORE ONLINE
2. New York Times DAVID ZINCZENKO is making his 17th appearance on the “Today’’ show, this time opposite Steve Schirripa — who plays Bobby Bacala on “The Sopranos” — on the subject of “heavy men.” Heavy as in large, overweight and lacking any evidence of abs, quads or tone. Mr. Zinczenko, the editor-in-chief of Men’s Health, is an expert on this topic, having written the 2004 best-seller “The Abs Diet.” He is trim, a welter to Mr. Schirripa’s big heavy, and today he is dressed in a gray Prada suit and open-collar white shirt, with his hair carefully brushed to frame a face that might be described as “handsome middle brother.” MORE ONLINE

There's been so much chatter lately about the death of the metro-sexual--that over-moisturized, mani/pedi-loving, style-obsessed man who would rather spend the afternoon at Bloomingdale's than the local pool hall--that it's leading those who run the dominant men's magazines to do some some serious soul-searching. When Cond? Nast’s men’s shopping titles Cargo and Vitals quickly came and went, it spelled the beginning of the end of a stereotype that, as publishers and marketers now say, was really more a creation of Madison Avenue than a real demographic. As with the rise of the “laddie” magazines a few years back and their focus on the beer-swilling, babe-chasing young man, the industry is waking up to the fact that the metrosexual represented only a tiny—and overhyped—segment of the population. A study by Leo Burnett Worldwide, as reported in a recent BusinessWeek story on the metrosexual’s demise, estimated that only one-fifth of the U.S. male population could be identified thus. 5. New York Times For most of the 20th century, under the influence of its founder, Henry R. Luce, Time magazine spoke in a single authoritative voice that reflected the world back to its readers. Now Richard Stengel, the new managing editor of Time, wants to change the metaphor. “We’ve traditionally been a mirror, and to me, we more and more have to be a lamp,” Mr. Stengel said, invoking the title of the study of Romantic literature by M. H. Abrams. “As a lamp, you’re shining a light on something.” MORE ONLINE

GLAMOROUS RIDE: Forget Town Cars this fashion season — sort of. Glamour magazine and DKNY Jeans have chartered a more stylish ride to shuttle celebrities to and from the Bryant Park tents during the shows. The Cond? Nast monthly rented a chopper from US Helicopter, which runs eight-minute shuttle trips every half-hour from John F. Kennedy International Airport to Manhattan's Downtown Heliport near Wall Street. Glamour first started shuttling passengers, such as Jared Leto and his 30 Seconds to Mars bandmates, in the DKNY jeans-branded chopper during the MTV Video Music Awards last week; Mandy Moore also hopped a ride to the Sheryl Crow and John Mayer show at Jones Beach. Molly Simms will take the shuttle to Fashion Rocks on Thursday. Glamour did not reveal the cost to rent the helicopter, but Donal McSullivan, senior vice president and marketing chief of US Helicopter, said rates range from $159 a person to $2,000 to charter an entire helicopter for eight people during normal business hours. Now, as long as the stars don't get stuck in traffic heading uptown…. REAL WOMAN: Perfume, T-shirts and water are the usual front-row gifts for editors and celebrities (not including, of course, all those goodies sent to their offices or homes). But at Carmen Marc Valvo's spring show Sept. 13, all the front-row seats also will come equipped with an issue of More magazine. As Valvo and More editor in chief Peggy Northrop will reveal after the show, the eveningwear designer has teamed up with the Meredith title aimed at the 40-plus woman for their annual model search. Valvo will dress the finalists in the competition, which last year drew nearly 20,000 entries, and the winner will get to keep a dress. Past participants have included Oscar de la Renta and Vera Wang. MORE ONLINE 7. Fashion Week DailyFrom Valentino to Vogue: Keeping it in the family, literally 9/1/06 By The Daily Editors http://www.fashionweekdaily.com/news/fullstory.sps?iNewsid=359917&itype=8486 (NEW YORK) Men’s Vogue has named Nancy Berger as retail and grooming director. Berger was most recently vice president of sales and marketing for menswear at Valentino USA. While this is Berger’s first position at Cond? Nast, she certainly won’t be lonely lunching in the cafeteria on her first day; her sister-in-law is Lottie Oakley, Vogue’s advertising director for American and European fashion. Her husband is Nancy’s brother Marc Berger, associate publisher of Details. In related Cond? Nast shuffles, Louis Coletti, former fashion, beauty, and fragrance manager at Departures, has joined Men’s Vogue as international fashion director. Laura McEwen has also been named advertising director of Vogue; most recently, she was the vice president and publishing director of Reader’s Digest. Karin Tracy joins Lucky from Teen Vogue, where she is now associate publisher; she succeeds Agnes Chapski, who joins Vanity Fair as associate publisher. And last but not least, former Giant publisher Michael Provus has been tapped as Vanity Fair’s new advertising director; he replaces David Wade, who resigned from the magazine.
8. Jossip It's here, it's here! Radar is online! We haven't had time to go through the whole site (it's been up for about three minutes) but we are extremely anxious to tackle the new newsy gossip, along with months worth of archives which have been just waiting for a home. Headlines like "The World's Gayest Logos" and "Judith Regan's Cock Shock" give us real hope for the future of this (Radar's third) launch. Especially since they bring news of Ashlee Simpson straddling Pete Wentz — and then throwing up everywhere. (That one is like a six-car pile-up on Holland Tunnel ... we do want to look away.) 9. New York Times Jessica Simpson is in love! So says an unnamed “friend” in the Sept. 11 issue of People magazine. Simpson fans who picked up the issue might be forgiven for thinking that her intimate declaration was on the record as her own statement, but in reality she was not interviewed for the article. The cover features a somewhat fuzzy picture of the singer smiling at the camera and the words “I’m in love” in large, bold print over the photo. But the text of the paragraph below the headline quotes a friend saying “he makes her heart skip.” The cover quotation is from the friend, citing Ms. Simpson’s words, not from Ms. Simpson herself.
