Michael Provus — publisher of the embattled bimonthly magazine that has seemingly shifted its focus and design with every issue — is leaving the magazine for Vanity Fair — leaving editor Jamie Hooper, for the moment at least, without a publisher.

New Republic Critic Tumbles in Blog-land: My ‘Dumb Mistake’
By Sheelah Kolhatkar
9/11/06 edition
http://www.observer.com/20060911/20060911_Sheelah_Kolhatkar_pageone_offtherec.asp

“I made a dumb mistake, and I’m very sorry I did it. I took the blogosphere’s bait, and I stooped to the level of these people who were commenting on my pieces, and I shouldn’t have,” Lee Siegel said. “And I’m especially sorry that I embarrassed a magazine that was nourishing me as an intellectual, long before it began publishing me as a journalist.”

The New Republic’s cultural critic was on the phone on Sept. 4, explaining what was coursing through his mind when he fired off comments in the “Talkback” section of his own New Republic blog, “Lee Siegel on Culture.” In the missives, he heaped praise on himself and insulted his critics—all under the anonymous handle “sprezzatura.”

Mr. Siegel’s barely camouflaged Internet self had offered him swift entry into the race to the bottom known as online reader commentary. In a sample posting, from Aug. 27, “sprezzatura” wrote to another poster, a nemesis named “jhschwartz”: “You’re a fraud, and a liar. And a wincingly pretentious writer. You couldn’t tie Siegel’s shoelaces.”

Jon Meacham Wants Newsweek to Be More Like Hayes' Esquire
By Tom Scocca
9/11/06 edition
http://www.observer.com/20060911/20060911_Sheelah_Kolhatkar_pageone_offtherec-3.asp

“I think it’s a good time to be doing this,” Jon Meacham said.

It was the afternoon of Sept. 5, the day Newsweek announced that Mr. Meacham would be its next editor. An incoming editor is required to be excited about new times and new technologies, even if the ad economy is collapsing and the readership is all on HomeStarRunner.com or whatever it is this year.

But Mr. Meacham’s excitement had some specifics theories behind it: For instance, at least he doesn’t have to run a newspaper. A newspaper, he noted, has to put a daily report up on the Web, then figure out some other kind of daily report to put out on paper. A newsweekly, on the other hand, has the luxury of working in two different time frames, leaving Newsweek “institutionally better prepared” for a blended Web-and-print future.

Newsweek Names Jon Meacham as New Top Editor
By Howard Kurtz
September 6, 2006
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/05/AR2006090501102.html

Jon Meacham, who began racing up the corporate ladder almost as soon as he joined Newsweek, was named the magazine's editor yesterday after nearly eight years in its No. 2 spot.

A Tennessee native who joined Newsweek 11 years ago, Meacham, 37, is a best-selling author who has specialized in writing about religion and history. Meacham, who takes over Oct. 2, is bullish on the role of the newsweeklies. "The idea that you can be either entirely analysis or entirely scoop-driven is a false choice," he said in an interview from New York. "We have to earn people's attention. Reporting is at the heart of the enterprise. We have to break news like a Web site, tell it like a monthly and do it every week."

COMMON PEOPLE: The battle of the celebrity weeklies used to be between People and Us Weekly as the top two contenders, but recently In Touch has muscled in. The Bauer weekly has taken over as the second-biggest title in the category, and is now increasingly breathing down People's neck on the newsstand. For example, the Aug. 21 issue saw In Touch come within a few thousand copies — or even overtake — People as the top newsstand seller, depending on whom you cite. According to several sources familiar with scan data, People's Aug. 21 issue with the recycled cover story "Before They Were Stars," sold 1.24 million copies, compared with the 1.26 million copies In Touch sold that same week with its cover story on Jessica Simpson. The same sources also claim People's Sept. 4 issue with a report on the JonBenet Ramsey case sold 1.26 million, while In Touch's issue with a cover on Nicole Richie's shocking weight loss came in at 1.34 million copies.

PINUP GIRL: Men all around the globe will find an added surprise in the September issue of Vogue Hommes International. The magazine devotes 48 pages to an unsurprisingly scantily clad Kate Moss in a series of photographs by Bruce Weber. The supplement looks like a personal collage and features stories and notes handwritten by Weber and Moss during their 15 years of working together. More than 70,000 supplements will be distributed as an onsert throughout the U.S. and other countries, including Russia, France, the U.K. and Italy.

FORTUNE'S MEN: It appears John Huey's Southern charm worked on John Brodie, who has been wooed from his deputy editor's post at Rodale's Best Life to join Fortune as assistant managing editor next week. Brodie, who spent six years writing about crime, business and Hollywood for GQ, and worked at Premier, Us Weekly and Spy before helping to launch Rodale's fortysomething men's title, had been mulling over whether to join Cond? Nast Portfolio over the summer, but apparently felt Time Inc. would be a better home after meeting with Huey and Fortune managing editor Eric Pooley. "Brodie is terrific," said Pooley. "He has the business fundamentals and the magazine fundamentals so it will be a nice combination for us." Brodie's first duties will include editing Fortune's front-of-the-book sections and drumming up titillating cover packages as the title prepares for more competition in the business category once Portfolio launches next spring.

CLEANING HOUSE: After months of declining ad pages at House Beautiful, Hearst president Cathie Black showed vice president and publisher David Arnold the door after seven years at the helm and welcomed back Kate Kelly Smith, the launch publisher of Rodale's Women's Health. Smith will rejoin Hearst later this month. Smith was previously associate publisher, advertising director and trade advertising manager for House Beautiful between 1994 and 2001 and joins the home monthly as its ad pages have fallen 19.9 percent through July, to 339, and 29 percent from July 2004, according to Publishers Information Bureau.

Interview with Rob Walker of the New York Times Magazine
9/05/06
http://www.vulturedroppings.com/back.php?x=228

There are two ways to play the consensus game. You can play it like a tug of war, where you pull as hard as you can and try to drag everyone a few inches in your direction. Or you can play it like bowling, and try to knock down all the pins by rolling straight down the middle. Cronkite, the Times, and the New Republic are bowlers. O'Reilly, Rush, Chomsky, and the Nation are tug of warriors. You get the idea.

Tug-of-war gets quick results, but bowling has its advantages as well. Roll a few strikes in a row, and pretty soon people are looking to you to define exactly where the middle is. The best bowlers, in other words, can wind up get promoted from player to referee. Rob Walker is just such a bowler. The New York Times Magazine "Consumed" columnist has spent so long mapping the territory where notions of cool and consumer product lust hit the marketplace that he's been appointed the semi-official keeper of the map.

In between the lines of Walker's Times articles are hints of a guy who reads the Baffler, listens to punk rock, and feels deeply for the plight of real people with problems larger than what Bape colorway to wear to tonight's Misshapes. He did, after all, write an entire book of ruminations on the landscape of his old hometown, New Orleans. You feel like he's gamely trying to suppress his gag reflex as he wades through the diamond-toothed junkyard of New York's "underground" street culture.

Here's a new one for ya': a magazine specifically designed for women to follow along their natural cycle. Yup, we're talking about that cycle.

Four Weeks, a free online mag on the rag, debuted September 1, and intends to sync up with every women's individual weekly hormone cycle. Er, maybe we should let them explain:

This means we don't simply recommend the best undiscovered and quintessential products and travel destinations that help make a woman's life fuller, easier and more fun. We go one step further. We recommend only those products and places that a woman will enjoy and need most during each week of her monthly hormone cycle.

Annabel Tollman, fashion director at Interview since May 2004, has taken a step back from her current position, The Daily has learned. Tollman, a former intern at Wallpaper who joined Interview in September 2003 and is perhaps best known as being Scarlett Johansson’s stylist, has been named contributing fashion editor at large. She joins Joanna Della Valle in her new capacity. According to a spokeswoman, Tollman is leaving the magazine in a full-time capacity to pursue personal projects. In related news, Interview editor in chief Ingrid Sischy has added stylist Kate Young to her magazine's masthead, annointing her contributing fashion editor at large as well. All three will work exclusively for Interview. Young is best known for her work with such New York-based celebrities as Natalie Portman, Jennifer Connolly, and Michelle Williams and Heath Ledger. The magazine spokeswoman added that additional appointments are likely to come in the near future, but that any announcement now would be premature. The full fashion team will be attending the upcoming shows.
