Los Angeles class: How to Get Freelance Work, also
with Eric Butterman
******* FELIX THE WISE Felix Dennis' magazines — which include Maxim, Stuff and Bizarre — aren't known for their subtlety, so it's no surprise the British publisher's latest book, "How to Get Rich," makes its objective crystal clear. Dennis' guide to achieving wealth on a par with his own — with an estimated worth of $1.36 billion, he's been named as Britain's 84th richest man — is tipped by the author as being the opposite of "messianic self-improvement manuals." He does offer helpful tidbits, though, including a diktat about parting with business ventures, which is anything but sentimental. "You're an entrepreneur," writes Dennis. "Your companies are not your ‘babies,' they are tools for acquiring wealth. Try to sell them before they peak.” FASHION ONE Add another magazine to the ranks of those looking to beef up their fashion coverage — and presumably, their fashion advertising. Self has named Hedy Gold as its new senior accessories editor, replacing Rachel Ezrin, who left the position a few weeks ago. Gold said she has been freelancing for the magazine and was hired to start full-time, beginning Monday. Previously, Gold has freelanced for O, The Oprah Magazine and was the contributing accessories editor for Time Style & Design. Under the direction of editor in chief Lucy Schulte Danziger and fashion director Evyan Metzner, the magazine has added a style Q&A between the readers and Metzner and "style solutions," which provides clothing ideas for different body types. In addition, fashion credits are now included in its beauty and "celebrity lifestyle" features. Danziger said more fashion has been added throughout the magazine so readers won't have to go out and buy a separate fashion glossy as a supplement to Self. "We want it to be the bible for everything women care about in their lives," Danziger said. Metzner said the magazine will also continue to have its celebrity and fashion spreads shot on location, as opposed to a studio, to provide a reflection of how its readers live in their own clothes.

College students are famous for their transient ways, moving frequently and rarely leaving a permanent mailing address for magazine publishers to send subscription solicitations to. For now, some magazine publishers are settling for their e-mail address. A new digital initiative to begin this month will give away thousands of magazine subscriptions to college students, but the magazines will be delivered via e-mail, not in print. The Magazine Publishers of America, the trade group that is sponsoring the initiative, is hoping to convert more students into magazine readers and introduce them to a digital medium that might stand up to print. The digital edition, reached by a link within the e-mail message, is a replica of the magazine, including text, photos and advertising. The magazine publishers participating in the initiative said they are looking for a viable way to reach college students, a coveted demographic for advertisers. “Colleges have typically been a black hole for magazines in terms of distribution,” Jack Kliger, the president and chief executive of Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S., said. “There’s always been a difficulty in reaching college students because the physical distribution issues are very unique to colleges in that nobody stays in one place for very long.” MORE ONLINE

Sometimes the fine print says it all: “Suri’s onesie by Petit Bateau; socks by Baby Dior.” What 5-month-old has a stylist? Or photos taken by Annie Leibovitz? Just when Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes needed to prove that they were regular human beings and not — as their downwardly spiraling images have it — flakes, Vanity Fair landed on newsstands yesterday with 22 pages of photographs and an interview that accomplish just the opposite. The extravagantly orchestrated photo shoot reveals a media circus masquerading as ordinary life, and speaks to the devil’s bargain some celebrities make with the public. As Leibovitz photos go, these are not among her best. The magazine cover, with Suri tucked inside her father’s jacket, evokes a famous 70’s photograph of Paul McCartney with his infant daughter tucked in his jacket, taken by his wife, Linda. The derivative picture is shrewdly calculated in a different way, though. Both parents have their eyes down, gazing at Suri, who stares directly at the camera; it’s a photograph that says, “Look, it’s not about us, it’s about her.” MORE ONLINE

Forgive Vanity Fair Editor Graydon Carter for wanting to yell "Stop the presses!" Monday morning. A day after the announcement that Tom Freston was axed from Viacom, Vanity Fair's much-hyped "New Establishment" list hit newsstands - and Freston was listed a notch ahead of his still-employed rival, CBS boss Les Moonves. Freston is ranked 17th on the list, up eight slots from a year ago. Moonves is No. 18, also up eight. Of course, the list was compiled before Freston's ouster. But one curious omission was the magazine's lack of detail about another recent high-profile Viacom controversy. It said Tom Cruise, who ranks 35th, and his partner Paula Wagner simply "parted ways" with Paramount, a Viacom unit, not mentioning Sumner Redstone's very public bashing of the star.

Rupert Murdoch has bumped the two young Google founders from the top spot among Vanity Fair's ranking of "New Establishment" leaders. Murdoch, chairman of News Corp., which owns The Post, moved up from fourth place on last year's list. He's followed by Google's cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page and next is Apple chief Steve Jobs, up from No. 5 last year. Rounding out the top five are Wal-Mart CEO H. Lee Scott, who slipped to fourth place from No. 2 a year ago, and Microsoft's Bill Gates, who rose a notch. Vanity Fair also added entertainers and financiers after doubling the number of people comprising the list, rechristening it "The New Establishment: Vanity Fair 100."
