******* After 11 years as editorial director of Conde Nast Publications, James Truman decided in January 2005 to chuck it all and take a break. "My strategy was to have no strategy,'' he tells Forbes.com. "I was sick of strategies." So Truman and his girlfriend, the illustrator Leanne Shapton, left New York for southern Spain, Morocco and, ultimately, London. That's where he met publisher Louise Blouin MacBain, who persuaded Truman to end his short-lived retirement and become chief executive and managing editor of her investment holding company, LTB Holding. Now one of Hollywood's most celebrity-soaked boutiques is suing one of the town's top celebrity chroniclers, accusing it of the ultimate snub. The owner of Kitson, the Robertson Boulevard clothing store favored by young celebs such as Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton and Denise Richards, says that Us Weekly magazine is intentionally omitting any mention of the store in its issues because of a nasty legal feud. Kitson founder Fraser Ross claims the magazine reneged on a settlement in which it agreed not to disrupt the business or disparage the reputation of the store. The lawsuit alleges the magazine now refuses to name or show the Kitson brand in credits, captions or celebrity photographs. As an example, the suit cited the magazine's cropping of a picture in such a way that its blue shopping bags, "generally known to readers, did not display the name Kitson on it." MORE ONLINE 3. Take, for example, the recent decision by Time magazine to hit the newsstand on Fridays instead of Mondays. What difference does a few days make? Possibly a big one. And the fact that it is going to happen at all shows how much the news media are changing. For years the newsweeklies have been a picture of stodgy stability. The three big titles - Time, Newsweek, and US News & World Report - have changed their tone over time, focusing less on "hard news" and more on trend, health, and entertainment coverage. But their essential formula, a weekly low-cost digest of a little bit of everything, has stayed relatively constant. That's what makes the doings at Time so interesting. MORE ONLINE
4. WWD FASHION FEUD, PART DEUX: The New York Times' Cathy Horyn felt cold reverberations on Monday from her curt review of Carolina Herrera's fall collection in February. In a Feb. 7 wrap-up piece on the fall shows, Horyn called Herrera's collection "remarkably irrelevant." She wrote: "I can't imagine her wearing these clothes: print dresses in pool shades of aqua (with black tights, to boot) and rusty wool suits with fussy collars or ruched yokes and sleeves that looked trussed rather than finessed. With a ruched garment, do you really want to see the strings?" The Herrera organization responded to Horyn's criticisms by shutting out The Times from its spring show in Bryant Park. Explained a Times spokeswoman: "We were not invited. The Herrera organization said this was because it thought our coverage of the fall collection last February included unflattering remarks the company regards as personal attacks. In response, I would say that we strongly disagree. Ms. Horyn's brief review was focused on the clothing, not Carolina Herrera personally." A Carolina Herrera spokeswoman had no comment, but the designer is known to have felt Horyn's review was insulting to both her and her staff. KISS AND MAKE UP: Having ruffled more than a few feathers at a controversial appearance at The New Yorker festival last September, Imitation of Christ designer Tara Subkoff appears to be in damage-control mode. At that time, she complained to New Yorker writer Judith Thurman and an audience that, among other things, Vogue editor "Anna Wintour only supports young, gay men" in an industry where "women are very unsupportive of each other." But the program notes for her spring 2007 show on Sunday are positively adulatory toward Wintour, praising her for having "inspired me so much in terms of thinking about politics and fashion, in short, with how much fashion has to do with the politics of our time, what's happening in the world and all of the wars." She then quotes from Wintour's September editor's note. Nor have gay men (also targeted in Subkoff's festival comments) gone unrecognized: For the first time, Imitation of Christ Couture Part I will donate a portion of all sales to Gay Men's Health Crisis. Subkoff's spokesman said the designer was on a plane to Greece on Monday and could not be reached for comment." MORE ONLINE
5. Fishbowl NY Although Fashion Week officially kicked off last Friday, Monday was a major day for the fashion world's biggest guns: Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta. Both shows are must-sees for old-guard fashionistas and power brokers who like to keep their well-manicured figures on the industry's pulse. Monday morning at Herrera there wasn't a starlet in sight. B-listers and assorted others are welcomed at other shows but Herrera, who has hosted Ren?e Zellweger in the past, doesn't bother with that by now overworked publicity ploy. Two of the most interesting attendees at the show weren't even acolytes who worship at the altar of all things fabulous but, rather, two gentlemen who favor bespoke suits. Graydon Carter was in the front row with his lovely wife Anna. When asked what was on his mind that morning, five years after the terrorist attacks that shut down this city and subsequently made his monthly editor's letters one of the most compelling reads in Vanity Fair, he admitted, "Anything but fashion. This morning I thought, the sky looks the same as it did then," Carter said. But he then changed the subject with a smile, saying, "I'm here to support Carolina. She's a friend of mine and she makes beautiful clothes."
6. Jossip This just in (we're posting now and asking questions later): We hear Maxim is continuing to bleed staffers - though this time they're cutting themselves. After last month's axing of four editors (and hiring a butt-load of Stuff editors to replace them), two editors have signed off of Maxim duty. Eric Gillin, a senior editor at the mag, along with managing editor Laura Silverman, have handed in their resignation from all-mixed-up Maxim. An insider tells Jossip that Gillin, formally of Blacktable, has been lured to "head up Esquire.com," (uh, we think that's probably also a breaking bit of news) while Laura had been in India launching the very controversial Maxim India, and won't return to the pub in New York. Honestly, we are already tired of resting on the "nobody can work with Chris Wilson" joke (even though it's probably true) so we're just going to turn our attention to Jimmy Jellinek, and the soon-to-be empty frat house he's running over at Dennis.
7. Fishbowl NY Always the hottest ticket in town for the Upper East Side set, at the Oscar de la Renta show Monday, it was standing room only for pretty young things, ladies who lunch and the powerbrokers who think Oscar is one of the few designers that make clothes they could actually see buying for their better halves. The usual suspects from Vogue, Bazaar, Elle and the rest of the all-important glossies occupied their respective sections in the front row. Carter made it to this show, too, as did a glam looking Linda Wells. The Allure editor-in-chief sported mile high peep-toe stilettos and a fresh pedicure -- all the better when you're promoting a new book on glamour. The biggest media moment came when newly minted US Open champ Roger Federer arrived as the guest of Anna Wintour (the two laughed and chatted like old pals during the show). Want to take a guess on who might be the next Men's Vogue cover guy? Wintour was determined to keep the man of the moment all to herself. After the show, when a flack for Olympus Fashion Week approached the tennis champ about having his portrait taken by Timothy Greenfield Sanders backstage (the noted lensman has been shooting Fashion Week attendees in a mini studio for three seasons and has gotten everyone from Catherine Zeta-Jones through Nicole Richie to pose) Wintour shut him down. Not giving up that easily, the intrepid flack tried to ask the champ again with Wintour out of earshot. According to one eyewitness: "[Wintour] went completely berserk and screamed, 'Not right now!'" Apparently, that left the mortified flack no choice but to give up the ghost and settle for bringing Donald Trump backstage instead."
8. Radar You can't keep a thuggish, bankruptcy-prone, Harvard-educated hip-hop mogul down. Six months after being forced out of The Source, Dave Mays is set to return to magazine publishing with a new title that's being described as an urban version of In Touch. Joining him in the effort are failed 38-year-old MC Ray "Benzino" Scott, his partner at The Source; surgically-enhanced radio yapper Wendy Williams; and Mimi Valdes, the former Vibe editor in chief who was canned, along with most of her staff, after BlackBook owner Ari Horowitz bought that title in July. Valdes will edit the mag, which is tentatively called The Truth. The plan is to launch later this fall, according to a source familiar with Mays's plans. While none of the parties involved returned messages seeking comment, another individual close to Mays says it's a done deal. "I can tell you that it's not a hundred percent, it's a zillion percent true," says the friend. "It's confirmed." MORE ONLINE
