Los Angeles class: How to Get Freelance Work, also with Eric Butterman
******* Time Warner Inc.'s Time magazine division is putting most of its Time4Media and Parenting Group titles on the market, as it looks to prune its portfolio of smaller, less-profitable titles. A total of 18 print names are going on the block, including Popular Science, Field & Stream, Outdoor Life, Skiing, Parenting and Babytalk. Many of the titles were acquired in 2000 as part of Time's $475 million acquisition of Times Mirror Magazines from Tribune Co. The magazines are expected to fetch in the neighborhood of $300 million, according to people familiar with the sale. Potential buyers include private-equity players such as Wind Point Partners, which owns Active Interest Media, publisher of such titles as Vegetarian Times. Efrem "Skip" Zimbalist III is president and chief executive officer of Active Interest Media and was previously the CEO of Times Mirror's magazines. Other potentially interested parties are Providence Equity Partners Inc., Spectrum Equity Investors and Warburg Pincus LLC, among others, these people said. MORE ONLINE
2. Min That is one twist in last Tuesday's (September 5) announcement by Hearst Magazines president (since November 1995) Cathie Black. A second is that Arnold was HM senior vp/chief marketing officer (since October 1997) Michael Clinton's first hire in May 1999 after Black gave him group publisher responsibilities. At the time, Arnold was the highly regarded Town & Country associate publisher under since-retired Molly Schae¬fer, and he was credited for strengthening the jewelry category MORE ONLINE
3. New York Post Bowing to pressure to improve immediately, Time Inc.'s underperforming Time Warner division announced it was planning to sell 18 magazines. The titles on the block comprise most of the male-oriented and leisure monthly titles in the Time4 Media Group, including Field & Stream and Popular Science, as well as the Parenting Group, which includes Parenting, Baby Talk and parenting.com. Golf Magazine Group, which is the most profitable in the bunch, will be reassigned to the Sports Illustrated group. The sale is being handled by J.P. Morgan Chase, which is hoping to fetch between $300 million and $400 million for the magazines. The aim is to find a single buyer for the entire group. MORE ONLINE
4. WWD PHOTO-SHOPPED?: When it comes to attending the Emmys or tending to your magazine's cover photo, In Style managing editor Charla Lawhon chose her editorial responsibilities during the close of the October issue. The Time Inc. fashion monthly shot Scarlett Johansson in August, but when the photos came in, Lawhon was displeased with the images planned for the cover. Marcel Pariseau, Johansson's publicist, said the photographer, Elaine Constantine, for the shoot was fairly new for In Style and the magazine's editors took issue with the layout and the lighting of the photos. Lawhon's nervousness weighed on her even as she drove to JFK airport Wednesday night, Aug. 23, to leave for the Emmys in Los Angeles, so she decided to return to the office to work on the cover through that Thursday night. (A source said Time Inc. editor in chief John Huey told Lawhon she needed to return from the airport to reshoot the cover, but a spokeswoman for Time Inc. denied that.) With the cover shipping on Friday, Aug. 25, Lawhon chose to run pick-up art instead, a move the magazine has not made since its infancy. An In Style spokeswoman said the magazine did call in additional photography for the cover, but the original shots appear inside the issue. "All's well that ends well," said Lawhon about the events. "It's a gorgeous cover and a gorgeous eight-page feature." The October issue hits newsstands Sept. 22. CONFUSION AT OK: Tom Morrisy, associate publisher of Time Inc.'s Entertainment Weekly, is said to be joining British celebrity weekly OK as publisher, replacing Melanie Danks. Sources said Morrisy packed up his things at Time Inc. on Tuesday, telling colleagues of his new position. However, Danks said she is still with the company. Asked if she was still OK's publisher, she responded, "Yes." A Time Inc. spokeswoman confirmed Morrisy's departure. The Time Inc. executive was bumped from publisher to associate publisher in January during a corporate reorganization by Ann Moore, Time Inc. chief executive officer, last winter. MORE ONLINE
5. National Association of Science Writers Jerome Groopman, a staff writer at The New Yorker and a professor of medicine at Harvard, has been awarded the 2006 Victor Cohn Prize for Excellence in Medical Reporting for stories that combine sensitivity to patients' concerns with a thoughtful analysis of issues and controversies in medicine. The prize, for a body of work published or broadcast within the last five years, was created by the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing, an organization of journalists and scientists committed to improving the quality of science news reaching the public. In recent articles, Groopman has critiqued the war on cancer, questioned the rationale behind common spinal surgery, argued for government funding of stem cell research and looked at the ethical concerns involved in studying complications in pregnant women. 6. Radar With the exclusive photos of Suri Cruise under his belt, and a new publisher at his side, Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter kicked off the season smelling like a winner. But privately, Radar has learned, he carries the whiff of defeat. After making a glorious stink about finally giving up his habit, the be-winged Canadian was recently caught puffing a Camel on his way out of the Diane von Furstenberg show at Bryant Park. "He just put it in his mouth like he was waiting for everyone to start snapping pictures," says an onlooker. "It was like a photo op." Perhaps he was trying to make a statement; after all, even after quitting, Carter remained one of the most vocal critics of the New York City smoking ban, which he derided as "asinine" and quasi-fascist. 7. Gawker Yes, it's coming. Again. Tomorrow marks the release of the second issue of Page Six: The Magazine, all yours and "free" with the Post. Funny, as the paper doesn't seem to be fluffing it much more than with print ads; the online page is still intermittently showing a promo for the old issue. That first issue of the mag, which feels like it came out about 7 years ago, was edited by alleged extortionist Jared Paul Stern; clearly that wasn't going to work anymore, so Page Six editor Richard Johnson had to oversee the operation and answer to Post executive editor Steve Cuozzo (both of whom were no doubt thrilled with the extra responsibility). Calls to Rubenstein PR confirmed not much more than this; no word on ad pages, staff, etc. Just 94 pages of strangely hush hush gloss. So, uh, it's coming, but it's kind of tip-toeing. MORE ONLINE
