Los Angeles class: How to Get Freelance Work, also with Eric Butterman
******* William B. Ziff Jr. (1930-2006), Magazine Publisher Titles like Skiing, Stereo Review and Boating didn't sound like the makings of a magazine empire in the 1950s and '60s when mass-circulation publications such as Life and Saturday Evening Post reached millions of American households every week. But William B. Ziff Jr. -- decades before 600-channel cable and niche marketing -- recognized he could attract both readers and advertisers with tightly focused specialty publications targeting big-spending hobbyists with single-minded passions. ALL OVER: A party to celebrate new window displays? Why not — it was New York Fashion Week. Bergdorf Goodman invited a crowd that included Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler and Carlos Souza to the third floor of its men's store on Wednesday evening to celebrate the new window designs. Bergdorf's windows are a collaboration with The New York Times T: Men's Fashion issue — which came out Sunday — and had a "Lost Boys" theme that displays giant photographic prints by photographer Jean-Baptiste Mondino. Clothing in the windows is styled to mirror the tough, urban, rock-inspired imagery of the photographs. The party also featured DJ Paul Sevigny, Chlo? Sevigny's brother. Meanwhile, downtown on Prince Street, Marie Claire held court in the loft of philanthropist Henry Buhl
to celebrate its Haute Shopping SoHo weekend. Sarah Michelle Gellar, one of the party's hosts, was wearing a Marchesa gold lace corseted bubble cocktail dress and Prada shoes. She's also going to be on the magazine's November cover. On Thursday, actresses Michelle Trachtenberg and Dana Delany; Giuliana DePandi, co-anchor of E News, and Bill Rancic — winner of "The Apprentice" — made the rounds at W's fashion week party in a Fifth Avenue penthouse.
INSTANT ACCESS: Fashion news used to seep out very slowly, often not appearing until months after the models had walked the runway. Of course, all that changed with photographs, then video, cable and now, the Internet. As fashion bloggers seem to pop up like mushrooms, designers and show organizers are struggling with how to cope with all of them demanding access and live video feeds. This season, a handful of media outlets, including MSN and New York magazine, put up same-day video footage of New York runway shows. Surprisingly, the outlet with the most comprehensive video coverage was upstart blogger network Coutorture Media. As of Thursday, it had posted 31 videos of runway shows online and put up still photos of every look on Flickr so its bloggers could have free photo rights.
DOMINATING THE AISLE: With its acquisition of the Wedding Channel, made final last week, the Knot said it has managed to corner about 90 percent of the online bridal audience, cementing its dominance of the wedding market online and, increasingly, in print. The purchase also put an end to a pileup of legal fees for both parties, since the Wedding Channel (actually a Web site) has for three years been suing its current owner for patent infringement on a search tool.

COVER an industry, any industry, long enough and you will learn that the sky is always falling. Morale has never been lower, competition is beyond the pale, and the customers have lost their minds. Nowhere has the drumbeat been more persistent than in publishing. After last week, I think Chicken Little may be on to something. On Tuesday, Time Inc. announced that it was putting 18 of its 50 magazines in the United States up for sale. Given the somewhat marginal publications involved — niche magazines like Popular Science, Yachting, Transworld Skateboarding — it is not as if the company is burning heirloom furniture to stay warm. But the garage sale of unwanted odds and ends signals that the world’s largest magazine publisher — the home of Olympian titles like Time, People and Life — is back on its heels. MORE ONLINE

WE all want to change the world. But for the people at Good magazine it’s going to take a lot of Red Bull. It was 9 a.m. one morning last week, and a half-dozen staff members were drinking iced coffees on Sunset Boulevard, a few steps down the bleached California pavement from their tiny, worn offices on the strip. At the center of the activity was Ben Goldhirsh, 26, the owner and a founder of Good, an unshaven bundle of enthusiasm wearing a Red Sox T-shirt and a pair of pale blue corduroys, held up by some clear twine from his car. In his very first communication to his staff, back in March of this year, James Bennet, the new editor of the Atlantic Monthly had to break the news that the famed, award-winning editor-writer duo of Cullen Murphy and William Langewiesche had quit the magazine. They had gone off to glossier (and presumably more lucrative) pastures at Vanity Fair. The two had been at the source of so much of the publication's recent excellence -- David Carr, in a column, called them the "Tracy and Hepburn of the Atlantic Monthly for the last 15 years" -- that their loss was bound to leave a big hole. Langewiesche alone had been nominated for eight National Magazine Awards in the last eight years (including those for his breathtaking look at the Ground Zero cleanup); as a magazine, the Atlantic itself had just received eight nominations for its work in 2005, in no small part due to Murphy's leadership. "We will miss both of these extraordinary men, but we will honor their record here most by finding and nurturing other great talents," Bennet wrote in his memo. "This magazine is the proper home for the most deeply reported and powerfully told stories in journalism." But the loss of the two giants was only one of many potential pitfalls facing Bennet as he took the helm of the 149-year-old magazine. It had just moved its office from Boston, where it had been housed since 1857, to Washington, D.C. This, too, created a certain amount of tribulation, with much of the staff refusing to make the move. MORE ONLINE
