Money Men, Europeans Circle Time4 Media Sale

AT least 28 parties have said they'd like to kick the tires at the niche magazines that embattled media giant Time Warner is trying to unload.

Potential bidders are expected to be heavily weighted toward financial players, followed by European publishers who are benefiting from a strong euro. Only a few U.S.-based strategic bidders have lined up so far.

The black books containing key financial data on the 18 magazines - which aren't expected to be released from J.P. Morgan Chase until the week of Oct. 2 - will show that the magazines have free cash flow in the range of $30 million, one source said. The company expects the mags to fetch a price between $300 million to $400 million.

Atoosa Inc.

Not content to let her tireless quest for brand extension — and a TV career — lie dormant, Seventeen editor Atoosa Rubenstein will appear as a judge in the upcoming cycle of "America's Top Model." With former partner ElleGirl out of commission, the CW network approached Seventeen magazine for its popular "dramality." (That monstrosity of a word is the network's.) Rubenstein claimed her magazine shelved talks with another network about picking up the second season of "Miss Seventeen" — MTV having passed — when it was approached by CW to be a partner on "America's Top Model," a show Seventeen readers cite as their favorite.

Elle originally became involved when Tyra Banks asked her friend Gilles Bensimon, its international creative director, to chip in a fashion shoot in his magazine as a prize, an Elle spokeswoman said. "As time went by, we saw that the show's demos were a dead match for ElleGirl's audience," she said, leading to the winner's spot on the cover of ElleGirl. "When ElleGirl folded, we understood that the show needed an age-appropriate magazine partner."

In the shrinking teen market, that left only two choices, and a spokeswoman for Cond? Nast's Teen Vogue said she was not aware of it having been suggested. But the TV-happy Rubenstein was only more than willing, though she cannot claim to be a loyal fan of the show. "I'm not going to lie and say I was a big viewer," she admitted, adding, "What's really important to me has been how we can take Seventeen off the page."

Breeder Magazine Spawns Website

Well into the second trimester after things got underway, Conde Nast launches the web version of Cookie, its magazine devoted to the care, feeding, and fashion of human larva. Web editor and good soldier Peter Feld has midwifed a cobbling-together of repurposed magazine content with a couple blogs -- one about maternal issues, another chronicling the precious antics of a three-year-old. Forged via the increasingly efficient assembly line at CondeNet, the Cookie site promises more of the same, plus the eventual pro-forma addition of Flash, podcasting, video, and lactation porn. One can dream. The mommy blog spits up a few amusing newsbits regarding comedic child endangerment, with only a little shuddering; the toddler blog is just as good as you'd expect. Beyond that, the CondeNet formula appears to be nicely nailed down, with the magazine staff actually determining what goes online from each issue, and the web staff dutifully carrying water as ordered. Not quite as specious as the old-world subscription-hawking mag sites, but barely.
