Vanity fare

Harvard isn't just a university. To the founders of a new bimonthly magazine,
Harvard is a sensibility, a state of mind, a kind of tribe. They hope it also
turns out to be a national brand to build a business around. This is not the
tweedy, ivy-covered image of Harvard. The cover of the first issue of 02138,
mailed free of charge this week to 50,000 alumni, shows actress Rashida Jones,
dressed in a smirk, suit-jacket, and apparently little else, with the headline
``She's Harvard. So are you. Discuss."

Besides the brief profile of Jones, daughter of arranger Quincy Jones, there's
a gossipy section called ``Vanitas," described by the magazine's marketing
literature as ``a Page Six for the Harvard set." It shows a young man gnawing
playfully on the shoulder of a comely woman in a New York restaurant.
Apparently, though it's not spelled out, they're both Harvard alums. Another
feature, ``Passions," reports on sportswriter Bruce Schoenfeld's refined taste
in Italian wines. It's a bright and sprightly way to imagine the world of
Harvard graduates. Whether it will work as a magazine remains to be seen.

Memo Pad: Nothing Like A Harvard Man ... Stage Fright ... Sexy Moves (Items 1
and 3)
9/26/06
By Stephanie D. Smith and Irin Carmon
http://wwd.com/issue/article/109325

NOTHING LIKE A HARVARD MAN: As many glossies increasingly skew toward an elite
as their ticket to financial survival, the new magazine 02138 does selectivity
one better: The title limits its readers to those who can recognize that it's
named after the zip code home to Harvard. Though its press materials insist it
is "NOT an alumni magazine," and the launch party tonight is at the Core Club,
not at the purportedly stodgy Harvard Club, the magazine is for and about the
"320,000 people who can list Harvard on their r?sum?s."

SEXY MOVES: Taking a career lead from legendary GQ editor Art Cooper, Mark
Healy, articles editor for GQ for the past three years, has jumped to Penthouse
as its new editor in chief. Healy, who takes his post Oct. 30, becomes
Penthouse's first editor in chief since the company restructured under new
ownership. Healy joins president and publisher Diane Silberstein, who joined
Penthouse Media Group in January from sexy competitor Playboy. Healy, 38, also
has been a senior editor at GQ, senior editor at Details and associate editor
at Rolling Stone. Said Jim Nelson, GQ's editor in chief, in an e-mail to
staffers: "I gotta say, Art ... is smiling today."
