Memo Pad: Scarlett's The One
By Amy Wicks

After six months, the guessing game as to whom Esquire magazine will soon name its "Sexiest Woman Alive" has come to an end — and, no, the much-criticized Jessica Biel will not be repeating her title. Scarlett Johansson is about to receive the distinction, according to a source close to the actress. A spokesman for the magazine declined to comment but said the November issue will be unveiled Oct. 17.

Esquire has featured Johansson quite a lot in its pages, perhaps tipping its hand as to the actress it loves most for 2006. But Johansson certainly has been on a roll, appearing most recently in "The Black Dahlia," Woody Allen's "Scoop" and has been a regular cover girl this year, including the famous photo of her in the buff (along with Keira Knightley and a clothed Tom Ford) on Vanity Fair's March cover — maybe that helped her cause with Esquire — and most recently the October issue of In Style magazine (see below). So, now you can skip the 20-questions game on Esquire's Web site, such as the historical person she has the biggest crush on (Albert Einstein) and who she would pick to play her in a movie that chronicles her life (Allen).

By Stephanie D. Smith

Cond? Nast's "Point of Passion" ad campaign is gearing up for phase two. This time the ads, developed by San Francisco-based agency Heat, will feature celebrities and influencers instead of anonymous models to best represent each magazine and Web site. "We're trying to find a group of subjects that have indeed strong relationships with the magazine but have an amazing effect on culture, too. Some are celebrities, but others just have influence on culture," explained Richard Beckman, Cond? Nast Media Group president.

Memo Pad: PHOTOSHOPPED
By Stephanie D. Smith

After In Style used a pick-up photograph of Scarlett Johansson on its October cover, director of photography Bradley Young is exiting the magazine as of mid-October. A spokeswoman confirmed his departure but said he will continue to freelance for the magazine. Young joined In Style in July 2005 after serving as photo director at GQ. In Style has not yet hired a replacement. MORE ONLINE

Memo Pad: SOONER THAN EXPECTED
By Stephanie D. Smith

Seems like those Business Week layoffs came much sooner than expected. On Thursday, WWD reported that BW staffers were nervous about expected layoffs in November. But that day, the business weekly let go of 12 staffers across administration, editorial and editorial production. Additionally, national correspondent and former managing editor Mark Morrison is leaving the magazine after 32 years to teach journalism at the University of Texas at Austin, his alma mater. During his college years, Morrison was editor of the newspaper, The Daily Texan. (Additionally, WWD reported Thursday that art director Malcolm Frouman, a 27-year Business Week veteran, has also left the magazine.)

Memo Pad: FOLLOWING THE HERD
By Irin Carmon

In the latest chapter of the newsweeklies striving for relevance in a 24-hour news cycle, Newsweek launched a political blog on Thursday called The Gaggle. It follows last week's introduction on the magazine's Web site of a weekly online interview feature called Capital Sources. Though Time promoted ex-Wonkette Ana Marie Cox from newly minted columnist to editor in a bid to perk up its own online political coverage, Newsweek is going with what it knows: Established political team members like Michael Isikoff, Jonathan Alter and Eleanor Clift will contribute. The blog will likely be a forum for raw material absent the normal rewrite process at newsweeklies wherein designated writers craft one narrative from other reporters' files. Of course, Newsweek correspondents have been quietly filing Web-only content in column format for the last five years, in part to offset the space and time limitations of a weekly. Newsweek is evidently hoping there's something magical about the word "blog." Though the site went live Thursday, its first entries dated back to Sept. 1, suggesting that even experiments in up-to-the-minute forms require some lead time.

EDITOR'S A ONE-MAN CRIME WAVE

MAYBE he finds it easier to write in prison. The former editor-in-chief of The Source magazine, David Blanks, has been arrested again. Blanks, who uses the nom de plume "Dasun Allah," was jailed last week after he allegedly assaulted three strangers in Harlem.

Cops say Blanks knocked down a man on West 125th Street, then pushed a 36-year-old woman to the ground and punched her, breaking her arm. He strolled two blocks away and hit another man before finally being arrested.

Blanks was let go from The Source in January after serving just a few months as editor. He worked as a writer there and at the Village Voice for years. He was jailed for four months in May after hitting two other random strangers in Harlem, and had been arrested last October for defacing a Jehovah's Witness temple.

Jessica Coen Already Over at Gawker

Times certainly are a' changin'. After three years as the mama of Nick Denton's favorite child, Gawker, Jessica Coen is moving on to Conde Nast, where she will act as the deputy online editor for Vanity Fair. We guess appearing in Conde Nast magazines is the best way to land a gig writing for them! Ah, New York.

Coen, who was lucky enough not to be outed by any tipsters in the Vanity Fair office, wrote a letter to her readers on the recently reformatted blog.

“After I'm done here, I'll be heading over to Vanity Fair, where I'll be their deputy online editor. While it's actually quite hard to say goodbye to this job (crap, am I being sincere already?), I can't pass up the opportunity to do all sorts of inappropriate things to the Conde Nast salad bar when no one's looking.”
