1. The New York Times
6 Degrees of Harvard
By CHARLES McGRATH
October 1, 2006
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/01/weekinreview/01mcgrath.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

HARVARD University spends somewhere between $500,000 and $1 million every year
to protect its brand name   to keep other institutions from billing themselves
as, say, the Harvard of Dog Training Schools or the Harvard of Pilates Teacher
Training Programs. This is one of many interesting facts to be gleaned from a
perusal of a new magazine called 02138.

The magazine takes its name from Harvard s ZIP code, though its own offices are
actually across the Charles River, in 02114. It celebrated its first issue with
a party in New York last week   in ZIP code 10022, to be precise. This is not
as confusing as it seems, because in the minds of the editors 02138 is
apparently a state of mind, a sensibility   a Harvard sensibility   more than
an actual ZIP code.

The collective consciousness we aim to tap stretches across not just ZIP codes
but continents,  the editors write. In other words, you automatically belong to
02138 if you went to Harvard, wish you did or just like reading about the kinds
of famous people who went there.

Memo Pad

FILLING UP FAST: One more office has been filled at the gleaming new Hearst
Tower: Heidi Sherman Mitchell has been named editor of Town & Country's travel
and wedding magazine spin-offs. In addition to the quarterly travel magazine
and the biannual wedding magazine, Mitchell will oversee the travel content in
the 160-year-old monthly. Mitchell said she left her position as senior editor
at Travel + Leisure in June to freelance and spend time with her family but was
upbeat about the heft of her upcoming workload. "It's only 18 issues a year,"
she said brightly. The position has been open since July, when Melissa Biggs
Bradley quit for unspecified reasons after more than a decade at the normally
low-turnover magazine. Two weeks later, arts editor Anthony Barzilay Freund
left to edit Art + Auction at LTB Media, which is overseen by former Cond? Nast
editorial director James Truman. Rather than name a replacement, Town & Country
editor in chief Pamela Fiori has promoted three existing staffers to split
Freund's old responsibilities: newly dubbed arts, culture and design editor
Sarah Medford will take over the Arts & Culture section, Andrew Sessa will
become associate editor to oversee "In the Country," and Zoe Settle has been
promoted to assistant editor.

SMART SHOPPING: Men have claimed for decades they buy Playboy for the articles,
not for the babes. But whether anyone ever believed that, fashion director
Joseph De Acetis is now taking a more thoughtful approach to the magazine's
fashion spreads to draw more attention to the department   and more spendthrift
fashion advertisers to the magazine. De Acetis said he is breaking from the
format of men's books' typical fashion departments. "The general magazines were
not latching onto the interest of the American male. We were sticking to the
same fashion pattern   putting a woman on the page or doing still lifes that
just show product catalogue-like, aka Cargo," said De Acetis. "I thought to use
[the pages] and be a little altruistic and not underestimate the reader."

BusinessWeek announced it is laying off dozen employees in administration,
editorial and editorial production to adapt the publication to a changing
market, a spokesman confirmed.

At the same time, editor Steve Adler stated in a memo to staff that longtime
art director Malcolm Frouman and national correspondent and former longtime
managing editor Mark Morrison were leaving the magazine. Also departing are
senior editor Elizabeth Weiner, who oversees media coverage, and Catherine
Yang, who worked in the Washington, D.C. bureau.

BusinessWeek's paid and verified circ declined 5.5 percent to 930,722 in the
six months of the year versus the year prior, according to the Audit Bureau of
Circulations, after the magazine decreased its rate base.
