Memo Pad: Bon Voyage ... Gothic Wonderland ... Stuffed With Style (Items 2 and
3)
By Amy Wicks, Khanh T.L. Tran, and Stephanie D. Smith
10/3/06
http://wwd.com/issue/article/109588?page=0

GOTHIC WONDERLAND: Is House & Garden magazine going Goth? Not exactly, but it
is embracing the trend with a "Gothic Splendor" layout in its November issue,
which became the inspiration for eight upcoming window displays at Bergdorf
Goodman. Douglas Little of D.L. & Co., who produced "Gothic Splendor" for the
magazine, came up with the idea, and Linda Fargo, senior vice president,
fashion office and store presentation at Bergdorf's, gave the green light for
the collaboration. "Designers have provided a theater for fashion, but few
people have tried that with home decor," said Little. Each window will tell a
different story, combining clothing from designers such as Alexander McQueen
and John Galliano with opulent backdrops that will have items such as a
sterling-silver chain spider-web encrusted with Swarovski crystals and a
mannequin riding sidesaddle on a skeletal horse.

STUFFED WITH STYLE: For Stuff's third annual "Style Awards," the Dennis
Publication title searched for an eclectic mix of fashion renegades. Making
this year's list of 35 honorees were Miami Heat guard and Sean John model
Dwyane Wade, L-R-G designers Jonas Bevacqua and Robert Wright, Kevin Federline
(aka Mr. Britney Spears), deceased punk Sid Vicious and actor Johnny Knoxville,
who was named "Style Man of the Year."

To fete some of the honorees in Los Angeles last week, Stuff carpeted the
rooftop of ArcLight Cinemas' parking garage with black Astroturf and
transformed it into the ultimate playroom for dudes. Between checking out leggy
ladies in little cocktail dresses, male guests played video games and munched
on junk food that was paired with fine wines from Dancing Bull (cabernet
sauvignon for McDonald's hamburgers and merlot for Domino's pizza   clearly
Stuff knows its readers' dietary habits).

NEW MAGS LAUNCH ALL-OUT VANITY PRESS
By On The Newsstand Editors
10/02/06
http://www.nypost.com/seven/10022006/business/
new_mags_launch_all_out_vanity_press_business_.htm

This week On the Newsstand reviews three new titles that explore the three P's:
the prissy, the precious and the pretentious.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a magazine about a college and its
alumni. But there is nearly nothing right about the debut issue of 02138, which
takes its name from Harvard's zip code. It has very little to say about Harvard
as a place or entity, focusing instead on high-profile and controversial alumni
doing things that generate a lot of attention. If reading about a documentarian
of girls' weight and body image issues is not for you, then there is a list of
the 100 most influential alumni. Some of the choices make sense, like Bill
Gates and George Bush, but a lot of it is just media-centric puffery.

Good, the mag for people who "give a damn," lives up to its name. It's good -
but it's far from great. Although glimmers of cleverness, hipness and humor
shine through at times, the mag reads like it has the weight of the world on
its shoulders. The theme of this issue is America, and why it's pretty messed
up. Like most of the articles, an essay by New Yorker contributor James
Surowiecki on global perceptions of the U.S. is ponderous and slow. It's hard
to imagine even the most guilt-ridden American consumer running out to buy this
mag.

'People' Pays $1M for Pics of Anna Nicole's Wedding/Suffering
By Gawker Editors
10/03/06
http://www.gawker.com/news/people/
people-pays-1m-for-pics-of-anna-nicoles-weddingsuffering-204844.php

You have to hand it to Anna Nicole Smith: despite the sudden, tragic death of
her son Daniel just days after the birth of her baby girl, she seems to have
made quite the comeback. Financially speaking, that is. Immediately following
Daniel's death, she had Getty Images broker the final photos of her son and
daughter, taken hours before his death, which were eventually sold to In Touch
for a nice $375K or so. But that's not enough to assuage this woman's
suffering! So last week, when she had her emotional, fake wedding to her lawyer
Howard K. Stern (who also claims to be the father of her new child), she had
someone whip out the PowerShot and take a whole new round of snaps. And
wouldn't you know it, Getty Images came to the celebrity weeklies with 30
images, ready to broker an offer. The lucky winner? People, who is said to have
forked over $1 million for the not-wedding wedding photos in a classy little
bidding war (Radar confirms the sale).

So what's People ed Larry Hackett getting for his money? Pictures of Anna in a
wedding dress with Stern, posing on the catamaran where they wed, and several
images where sad little 3-week-old Dannielynn is being held. So what makes
these banal shots worth $1 million? In one pic, Anna is supposedly holding the
baby while wearing pasties. Apparently, they're saving the one with the titty
tassles for Cookie.

Us Weekly's Ken Baker Looks to People For New Job   Or At Least Job Interest
By Jossip Editors

us-weeklys-ken-baker-looks-to-people-for-new-job-or-at-least-job-interest-20061003.php

Us Weekly West Coast executive editor   and, of late, our favorite punching bag
Ken Baker must be growing a bit nervous about his future tenure with Jann
Wenner's tab. How else to explain his recent chats with the competition? We
hear exclusively that Baker   who's Us contract is said to expire in the spring
of '07   has been making the inquiry rounds with People managing editor Larry
Hackett. Baker phoned Hackett to let him know his services are available,
should People need the West Coast help. Bragging about his ability to "rally
the reporters" and get them to "break news on a regular basis," Baker spoke to
Hackett as recently as August about a possible jump.

It wasn't until People staffers got wind of the conversations and confronted
Hackett about fraternizing   and potentially hiring   Baker did the Time Inc.
title chieftan back off from talks. (It's no secret People staffers don't look
highly of Baker.) Hackett's excuse for taking Baker's calls? That he was merely
conducting "investigative research" on the competition, using the Us editor to
learn more about Janice Min's operations with no intention of actually hiring
him. Which would make sense, theoretically, as this wouldn't be the first time
Hackett has done it.

On Baker's end, meanwhile, a jump to People may not be what's he's actually
after. He could be simply stirring up interest in his gossip brand name to
ensure things go his way when it's time to renegotiate his contract in the
spring. Or at least that's that excuse he can tell boss Janice when she reads
this.
