Ed's Girl on the Hunt: Dreaded networking!
***********

Check out ed2010.blogspot.com for Ed's Girl's continuing saga: "At this point, the only word I dread hearing more than contacts is 'networking.' Networking isn't bad; it's just so different from the educational system I spent most of my life in. If my school had told me that happy hour could have proven so integral to my future job prospects, I wouldn't have wasted so many Thursday evenings in statistics lectures."

Unfortunate Rank

Seems like female chief executives of media companies are losing their influence when it comes to Fortune's most recent rankings of the 50 Most Powerful Women in Business — even Ann Moore, chief executive officer of Fortune's parent Time Inc. Moore fell in the rankings to 15 from 13 last year, leading a tumble by all the top brass at magazine publishers. Martha Stewart dropped to 28 from 21 in 2005 and Cathleen Black fell to 38 from 34 last year. Additionally, the enduring Oprah Winfrey fell to eight from four last year; Judy McGrath, chairman/ceo, MTV Networks, fell to 12 from 10, and Stacey Snider, ceo of Viacom's Dreamworks SKG, took the biggest plunge to 50 from 33 last year.

So what's the magazine's beef with media executives? "Every year there are new women elbowing their way on the list — this year there are nine, latest year there were 12," explained Cait Murphy, Fortune's assistant managing editor, who helped edit the package. "To keep your place means you need to have done something good that year to make room for these fantastic women." And, face it, 2006 hasn't been a great year for most media companies. In Stewart's case, said Murphy, "her show was canceled, she has these new branding things" — like a line of homes with builder KB Home — "but those were untested. At one point her stock was below its IPO price. It's hard to say it was a great year for her, and I bet she would agree with that."

For Moore and Black, laying off 450 people from your company and shuttering two magazines probably doesn't qualify as "good" either. That said, not all media execs fell in rank. Anne Sweeney, president, Disney-ABC Television Group, rose to 13 from 16, while Amy Pascal, co-chairman, Sony Pictures Entertainment, rose to 41 from 42.

Vanity Fair's Fash Overhaul
By Jim Shi
October 4, 2006
http://www.fashionweekdaily.com/news/fullstory.sps?iNewsid=368664&itype=8486

Change is once again in the air at Vanity Fair.

Following fashion editor Christine Hahn’s resignation from the Cond? Nast title, fashion director Michael Roberts and fashion and style director at large Elizabeth Saltzman have revamped their fashion team with a series of promotions. Rebecca O’Neill, Saltzman’s London-based assistant, moved to New York after covering the recent Milan shows to become one of the magazine’s associate fashion editors, women’s market. Meanwhile, Sam Broekema and Samantha Milner, both former fashion assistants, have tentatively taken on the titles of associate fashion editor as well, covering the men’s and accessories markets, respectively. Alexis Bryan remains executive fashion editor

With all the upward movement, the magazine has had to hire new fashion assistants. Rickie De Sole, daughter of Tom Ford brand chairman Domenico De Sole, whom The Daily reported joined the fashion department in July, has officially been made a fashion assistant. Joining her is Chase Robinson, whose mother is, interestingly enough, Andrea Robinson, president of the Tom Ford Beauty division of Est?e Lauder.

Faux Pas Feast

If Cindi Leive’s recent Glamour’s Big Book of Dos and Don’ts only left you ravenous for more, you’re in luck—together with web media host Blip.tv, Glamour’s new Don'tspotting site is putting faux pas-addicts’ fave pastime online. "Glamour's Dos & Don'ts feature has become a pop culture institution, and we are excited about creating a fun, interactive experience for our online readers," said Glamour Online Editor Katherine Tasheff in a statement.

In the grand tradition of photo-ranking sites like HotOrNot.com, registered users can post unlimited photographs from their computers or cell phones for other faux-pas addicts to comment on, categorize, and rate; contributers can even compete for a high ranking. "Glamour readers can now play the role of editor, critiquing street fashion and even choosing the best and worst examples," said blip.tv COO and co-founder Dina Kaplan. "I just hope I don't end up on the Don'ts section of the site myself."

The Worst of Time

Just when you thought things couldn't possibly get any more demoralizing at Time Inc., along comes news that the media giant is planning more job cuts next year. The company so far is dismissing the talk. One source said the cuts -"specifically job reductions at Time magazine" - are expected to coincide with the expiration of the current contract with the Newspaper Guild.

That pact between the company and the editorial employees on the biggest New York-based magazines expires Feb. 1, 2007. The new contract, the first since an agreement went into effect in 1999, will mark the first contract negotiations for John Huey as the editor-in-chief of Time Inc. The last round was overseen by Norman Pearlstine, now a senior adviser on media and telecommunications for the Carlyle Group, the high-stakes buyout firm.

The union is already preparing for battle. "When we opened negotiations in 1998, the company came to the table with demands for drastic cuts in the areas of, among other things, vacations, holiday compensation, night-work bonus, severance packages and Sabbatical leave," warned the union in a newsletter that went out to its members earlier this week. "After more than a year of grueling negotiations, the Guild beat back the most onerous of management's demands and came away with a good contract."
