PEACE will reign across the publishing world on Monday night when Hearst finally dedicates its new $500 million Norman Foster-designed glass tower on Eighth Avenue with a gala grand opening celebration.

S.I. Newhouse, Jr., chairman of Cond? Nast and its parent Advance Publications, and his brother Donald Newhouse, the president of Advance, are expected to attend. So, too, is heir apparent Steven Newhouse and Cond? Nast CEO Charles Townsend. Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., chairman of the New York Times, is also expected to be on hand.

They'll be joined by some 700 other guests including Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Gov. George Pataki, New York's top cop, Ray Kelly, and Oprah Winfrey, a joint venture partner of Hearst in O, the Oprah Magazine.

Seeing Red

Can a tank top change the world? It seems unlikely, but that’s the question Gap is posing in The New Yorker issue out Monday as part of its new advertising campaign for the Gap (Product) Red collection. In addition to this ad, the magazine has another 10 pages devoted to Gap’s limited-edition collection of clothing and accessories to help eliminate AIDS in Africa.

In addition to The New Yorker, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Elle and O The Oprah Magazine will include Red ads in their November books. And, for the first time in 15 years, Annie Leibovitz signed on to shoot a Gap campaign and she picked a good time to do it, as Christy Turlington, Don Cheadle, Jennifer Garner, Steven Spielberg and Chris Rock were among the celebrities that participated. Many of the images include a tag line incorporating the word “red,” such as inspired, admired and uncensored. Outdoor ads also will be placed in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Chicago. Gap has a five-year partnership with Red and it will introduce new pieces to the collection at future dates. Red also is working with Converse, Georgio Armani and Motorola.

Meanwhile, The New Yorker kicks off its seventh annual festival today, which elicited a ticket-buying frenzy. A spokeswoman for the festival said this year’s events sold out far more quickly than past years, despite there being more events than ever.

After Kate Kelly Smith jumped from Rodale’s Women’s Health to become vice president and publisher of Hearst Magazines’ House Beautiful, Mary Murcko, founding publisher of Best Life, will move over to Smith’s old digs. Murcko will become vice president and publisher of Women’s Health as the 10-times-annual title raises its rate base to 750,000 in January, while Best Life will raise its rate base to 450,000 in February.

Prior to joining Rodale in March 2004, Murco served as associate publisher of W (which is owned by WWD parent company Cond? Nast) and spent seven years in Thailand as general manager/group publisher for Hachette Filipacchi Post in Bangkok.
