Booster Seats: Mags Spin Off New Titles
By Lucia Moses
10/09/06
http://mediaweek.com/mw/departments/magazines/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003222700

As they struggle to stay relevant to readers and advertisers, maga- zines have spun off Web sites, podcasts, books, events and other media properties. Having gone beyond the printed page, many magazine companies now face the question: How do they extend the magazine while staying true to its image? For several titles, the answer has been to appoint a brand steward.

In some cases, it happens on the editorial side. At Cond? Nast's Glamour, editor in chief Cindi Leive last year relieved managing editor Susan Goodall of some day-to-day duties so she could focus on managing the magazine's online, podcast, video, book and other extensions, in part to ensure they reflect the brand's image. Liz Vaccariello, chief editor of Rodale's Prevention, earlier this year created a new position of brand editor to develop and manage the magazine's extensions across all media.

Elsewhere, the response has come from the business side. Hearst's Redbook publisher Mary Morgan in June hired Robyn Mait Levine as brand development director, a new position, to translate the magazine into other media. Morgan said she sought to pattern the position after the brand manager function well-established at many packaged-goods companies. "Most all of the [magazine marketing departments] are still somewhat beholden to the advertising model," Morgan said. "The majority of their assignment is about how to support those advertising dollars. What we wanted to create was a position that was never beholden to one side of the floor."

Memo Pad: Off the Radar... Free Speech
By Stephanie D. Smith and Irin Carmon
10/10/06
http://wwd.com/issue/article/109849

OFF THE RADAR: It's generally a questionable sign when a publisher flees before a magazine publishes its first issue; it's worse when the magazine has been launched and failed twice already. But Radar and Radaronline.com publisher Katherine Rizzuto is leaving the Maer Roshan start-up to become publisher of Cond? Nast bridal magazines Brides, Modern Bride, Elegant Bride and Your Prom, reporting to Susan Rerat, recently promoted to Bridal Media Group vice president and publishing director. As summarized by a statement from Radar: "Radar publisher Katherine Rizzuto received an incredible offer to return to her former employer overseeing three magazines, an offer she rightfully couldn't refuse." Rizzuto has defected after just two-and-a-half months on the job and before making the rounds to advertisers for Radaronline.com or the magazine, which is scheduled to be launched in March 2007 (though, according to a Roshan spokesman, there are three paid ads on the Web site).

FREE SPEECH: At last weekend's New Yorker Festival, the relative intimacy of the onstage interviews seemed to liberate the invited luiminaries to wax candid, though certain characters needed no help. "Jews," said Jon Stewart, interrupting New Yorker editor in chief David Remnick's description of his magazine's audience at their interview event. "Jews, and people who know Jews." (This, in an interview between two Jewish guys from New Jersey.) Of course, there were also moments of comparative seriousness, too. Told by Remnick that he was "probably the most astute press critic there is," Stewart replied, "I'm an astute press critic who interviews Pervez Musharraf and has a real effect on politics. But the truth is, what do I do that is different and unique that makes people watch me? And that is, I make page sodomy jokes. And if I stop doing that, I'm no longer anything….We are, if anything, editorial cartoonists."

Penthouse Softens Its Image
By Lucia Moses
10/09/06
http://mediaweek.com/mw/news/print/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003223375

For years, Penthouse staked out a middle ground in the mens’ lifestyle category between the relatively demure Playboy and the hard-core Hustler magazine. In the late ’90s, caught between Internet porn sites on one hand and laddie magazines on the other, Penthouse became more sexually explicit, costing it advertisers and newsstand circulation.

Now, Marc Bell and Daniel Staton, who bought a bankrupt Penthouse in 2004 after founder Bob Guccione lost control of it, are betting they can win back advertisers and readers with softer pictorials and more lifestyle content. That process began with Diane Silberstein, who took over as president and publisher in January 2006, and will continue under Mark Healy, who becomes the magazine’s editor in chief Oct. 30.

Healy, who leaves his job as articles editor at Cond? Nast’s GQ for the Penthouse post, said he intends to position the title as the sexual lifestyle authority. “There’s not a good magazine out there where you get what I consider a lively and contemporary discussion about sex and relationships,” he said. “There is a great opportunity to focus on what Penthouse does better than anybody else in terms of the sexual content.”

Hearst Tower Party: One of These Things Is Not Like the Others
By Gawker Editors

http://gawker.com/news/hearst/hearst-tower-party-one-of-these-things-is-not-like-the-others-206459.php

Last night was the official opening of the new Hearst tower, the green and glassy behemoth on Eighth Avenue. Pretty much every media power player was in attendance: Oprah, Martha Stewart, Dan Rather, Katie Couric (awkward!), Governor Pataki, and...Christopher Meloni? Sure, the actor might not carry much weight in the media world, but Cathie Black just LURVES Law & Order: SVU. Seriously, she can't get enough!

Crash and Burn How New York's most notorious party crasher got bounced
By Rachel Jones
10/09/06
http://radaronline.com/features/2006/10/crash_and_burn.php

On a sweaty July evening, a stylish crowd of New York cognoscenti cooled its heels at the Ziegfeld Theater, waiting for a private preview of Pirates of the Caribbean II. Suddenly, the quiet hum of conversation was broken by an angry altercation in the lobby. "Don't you know who I am?" barked a perspiring, disheveled figure, as he elbowed his way to the front of the concessions line. Flashing a laminated pass, he began to chastize anyone who would listen,"You don't even know who I am. You have no idea." Finally, popcorn in hand, the nuisance stumbled down the aisle, dropped into a seat, and spilled his prize across the floor. It was just another night out for Priyantha Silva.

Silva's not a celebrity. He's not particularly rich or handsome. In fact it's a safe bet you've never heard of him. But, to a growing number of security personnel around town, he's become an almost legendary figure: Priyantha Silva, party crasher.

Sri Lankan by birth, New York's most notorious interloper has ambushed every see-and-be-seen function the city has to offer, from fashion industry events and movie premieres to gallery openings, charity fundraisers, and corporate-sponsored product launches, from Bridgehampton polo matches to celebrity-studded Gucci galas. If there's a free cocktail to be consumed, chances are good that Priyantha Silva will find a way to get through the door and consume it. And while he's not the only one of his kind to make the New York party scene his playground (regulars like Shaggy, a perennially uninvited guest with Christopher Lloyd hair, are always lurking somewhere behind the velvet ropes), his loud white suits and tropical shirts make him the most conspicuous crasher on the circuit. To Silva, slipping past Manhattan's clipboard centurions appears to be a full-time job.

Brides.com To Offer $200 'Engagements On Ice' At Rock Center Rink
By Fishbowl Editors
10/10/06
http://mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/

Because merely a catchy title is enough to warrant a corporate partnership these days, Brides.com has announced a deal with the rink at Rockefeller Center to capture on-ice marriage proposals — "Engagements On Ice" — and post them online.

It's more complicated than you think: The "Engagements on Ice" package offers front-of-the-line access ensuring that the lucky couple can head straight onto the ice for a romantic spin around the Rink. As the session ends, the other skaters will disappear, leaving the couple alone on the ice. 'Their song' will begin to play, setting the scene for the perfect proposal. Once she says 'yes,' The Rink staff can deliver a bouquet (dropped off ahead of time by the proposer) to the new fianc?e before the couple takes one last lap around the Rink. To complete the experience, the two toast to their good fortune at the rink-side restaurant Rock Center Caf? before receiving an exclusive Brides.com gift bag. The cost of "Engagements on Ice" is $200, all inclusive.

Editor Theresa DiMasi will "conduct interviews with some of the affianced couples directly after the proposal has been accepted." We'll concede this is a step-up from proposals via the stadium Jumbotron, but only slightly. There's more affianced lunacy.
