Telling Title Tales
By Keith J. Kelly

SOME magazine people are happy - even in these troubled times. Terry McDonell, the managing editor of Sports Illustrated, is about to get a bump up in title and prestige inside Time Inc., sources tell Media Ink.

When the new promotion is unveiled, McDonell will be called editor of the Sports Illustrated Group, a brand-new post.

The promotion is somewhat akin to the trail blazed by Martha Nelson, who last year was moved from managing editor of People to editor of the People Group. (Traditionally, there is one editor-in-chief at Time Inc. and the individual mags call their head managing editor.)

Analyze This??¦ Dividing Lines
By Stephani D. Smith & Amy Wicks

ANALYZE THIS: Speculation is swirling that Time Inc. is prepping to lay off more employees by the end of the year. But while the company denies cuts are imminent, there could be one reason staffers should be wary: Consulting firm McKinsey & Co. is, as one source close to the company described, "swarming" the Time Inc. offices to evaluate the troubled publishing division.

Time Inc. confirmed the two are working together. While publishers employing consultants isn't unusual (even at WWD parent Cond?© Nast), the McKinsey/Time relationship is notable ??” the troubled company is under pressure to boost profits and, as one media observer explained, McKinsey is "infamous in the industry for swinging the axe."

DIVIDING LINES: Vanity Fair has finally sorted out any confusion over its fashion department. The solution? It's given Elizabeth Saltzman a new title. Saltzman, fashion and style director at large at Vanity Fair since April and fashion director since 1995, is taking on the newly created position of international social editor. She will oversee the magazine's social coverage and also report on a wider variety of areas, including architecture, design and the arts, as well as fashion. Michael Roberts remains fashion and style director, having joined Vanity Fair in April from The New Yorker.

Mags Tap Brand Managers
By Lucia Moses

As they struggle to stay relevant to readers and advertisers, magazines have spun off Web sites, podcasts, books, events and other media properties. Having gone beyond the printed page, many magazine companies now face the question: How do they extend the magazine while staying true to its image? For several titles, the answer has been to appoint a brand steward.

In some cases, it happens on the editorial side. At Cond?© Nast??™s Glamour, editor in chief Cindi Leive last year relieved managing editor Susan Goodall of some day-to-day duties so she could focus on managing the magazine??™s online, podcast, video, book and other extensions, in part to ensure they reflect the brand??™s image. Liz Vaccariello, chief editor of Rodale??™s Prevention, earlier this year created a new position of brand editor to develop and manage the magazine??™s extensions across all media.

Elsewhere, the response has come from the business side. Hearst??™s Redbook publisher Mary Morgan in June hired Robyn Mait Levine as brand development director, a new position, to translate the magazine into other media. Morgan said she sought to pattern the position after the brand manager function well-established at many packaged-goods companies. ???Most all of the [magazine marketing departments] are still somewhat beholden to the advertising model,??? Morgan said. ???The majority of their assignment is about how to support those advertising dollars. What we wanted to create was a position that was never beholden to one side of the floor.???

Tough Times for US lads??™ mags
By Jeffrey Blyth

Lads' mags, which did so well when they were first launched in the US, are now experiencing tough times. At Maxim, Stuff and FHM, ad pages have dropped markedly this year, and so has revenue.

The latest figures from the Publishers' Information Bureau confirm the trend, although Maxim ??” according to Media Daily News ??” is struggling hard to counter the downward trend it is turning out to be a tough battle.

In August, for example, ad pages in Maxim were down almost 16 per cent compared to the same month a year ago. Income was down more than 10 per cent. Poor newsstand sales are to blame. Compared with a year ago, single-copy sales in the first six months of this year were down over 14 per cent.
