MarketWatch Jon Friedman s Media Web: Time Magazine ushers in the Stengel Era By Jon Friedman October 16, 2006 http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/Story.aspx?guid= %7B9DA94A67%2D4EAC%2D4857%2DBDEA%2D7825159F536C%7D&siteid Stengel was hired in May to be the 16th managing editor in Time's 83-year history at an especially challenging period. It's fair to say Time has never had to deal as stressfully with the dreaded "R" word: relevance. Noting Time's stagnant circulation figure of 4 million, cynics question whether a weekly news magazine is still necessary. Internet news sites and blogs can supply immediacy and context. And crucially, 24-hour cable news channels provide vivid pictures. Could a magazine match these media last week when television viewers were transfixed by the spectacle of a burning skyscraper in Manhattan, after a small plane carrying New York Yankee picture Cory Lidle crashed into it? The answer seems rather predictable. MORE ONLINE 2. Daily Herald Salt Lake papers push sexy tabloid in Utah County By Doug Fox October 16, 2006 http://www.heraldextra.com/content/view/196531/ Publishing partnerships produce some strange bedfellows, but it's not every day that one party is tempted to hide the publication under the mattress. Such is the case in Salt Lake City, however, where a marriage was consummated in 1952 -- for better or worse -- between rival newspapers, The Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret Morning News. The union's latest offspring is a free tabloid magazine laced with R-rated (some would say pornographic) profanity, including unabashed use of the f-word. The publication returns profits to the Deseret Morning News, and to the LDS Church, which owns the newspaper. MORE ONLINE 3. WWD Memo Pad By Irin Carmon and Stephanie D. Smith October 16, 2006 http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/109985?page=0 PACK LIGHT: Time Inc. employees may be shaking in their boots about possible looming cuts, but at least one title at the company is expanding. Real Simple, which is profitable, is planning to roll out a fourth spin-off on travel next March. It follows Quality Matters, Family and this fall's Food, each of which has thus far been a one-off effort, with the highly successful Family slated for an encore in 2007. "They reflect arenas where our consumers seem to have a lot of interest, but which we don't necessarily have the opportunity to explore as much as we'd like in the main magazine," said editorial director Jim Baker, whose staff to oversee brand extensions has grown to two editors, both of whom happen to have once served as his assistants at Glamour. What will Real Simple's coverage of travel bring to an already packed field? The Real Simple aesthetic, said Baker, which "never loses a sense of fun, a sense of style and sort of a sense of transcendence." Not to mention a sense of, well, simplicity. A book on entertaining will be out at the end of the month, and one on that oh-so-glamorous topic of cleaning is expected next year. WHAT ARE YOU WEARING?: Want to know where Best Life's cover subjects get their look? Readers won't have to search far beginning with the November issue, on newsstands Oct. 20, when editor Stephen Perrine begins placing fashion credits right on the cover of the magazine. "Why put a star on the cover in an amazing suit and then force the reader to hunt and peck to find out where that suit is from?" said Perrine. "Our men are highly successful, and they're juggling tremendous responsibilities. It's our job to make looking great easy for them." Not to mention make advertisers even happier. For November, cover subject Matthew Fox is decked out in Ermenegildo Zegna. MORE ONLINE 4. Mediaweek Paste Spins for Dollars By Lucia Moses October 16, 2006 http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/print/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id= 1003254734 As a small-circulation title that eschews celebrity, scandal and pop music coverage for serious discussion of music, Paste magazine may never rival Wenner Media s Rolling Stone or Spin. Yet through multimedia extensions such as podcasts, and DVDs that are packaged with the magazine, the independent monthly has attracted ad dollars from heavy hitters like AT&T, Dodge and New Line Cinema. President/publisher Tim Regan-Porter said Paste, which in January will raise its rate base to 180,000 from 150,000, is benefitting from marketers desire to engage with readers at their point of passion in this case, underground and mainstream music. Our size has not been as big a disadvantage as we would have thought when we started, Regan-Porter said. If you ve got the right demographics and buzz, people actually seek you out. Subscriptions, which account for about three-fourths of its circ, are their upper 30s with an average household income of $80,000. MORE ONLINE 5. Mediaweek Abramoff Probe Touches Primedia's Channel One, MPA By Todd Shields October 16, 2006 http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/print/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id= 1003254277 Disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff and his associates repeatedly sought payment from the Magazine Publishers of America and Primedia's Channel One as they orchestrated lobbying campaigns in Washington, according to a Senate report. A former Channel One executive prodded Abramoff and his associates for favorable op-eds and think-tank reports as the channel s business model came under attack in Washington, according to the report. Abramoff in turn asked the Primedia executive for payment, according to e-mails included as part of the 608-page report from the Senate Finance Committee. MORE ONLINE 6. Mediaweek H&G Bulks Up on Ad Pages By Lucia Moses October 16, 2006 http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/print/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id= 1003254204 Over the past decade, Cond? Nast s House & Garden has had some cracks in its foundation owing to soft ad pages. However, despite a spurt of hip shelter titles such as Dwell and sibling Domino, the 105-year-old monthly has managed to eke out a comfortable existence. The rebound of House & Garden is one of the great successes of our company in 2006, said Chuck Townsend, president/CEO of Cond? Nast. Everyone knows this year has been a challenge for the publishing industry, so it is particularly rewarding to see the headway House & Garden has made this year. While ad page and circulation for the shelter category as a whole have softened this year, House & Garden has been buzzing. Through November, its ad pages rose 17.5 percent to 800 compared to the year prior, reports the Mediaweek Monitor. By comparison, Hearst Magazines House Beautiful fell 18.1 percent to 613 in the same period. House & Garden is also seeing circ growth; the monthly will increase its rate base in January to 950,00 from 900,000, its 10th spike in as many years. MORE ONLINE 7. The New York Times Seeing Old Friends, Settling Old Scores October 15, 2006 http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/15/business/yourmoney/15suits.html At a party she organized last week to celebrate the publication of Carleton S. Fiorina s memoir, Tough Choices, Cathleen P. Black, president of Hearst Magazines, was generous in her praise. Ms. Black, who noted that she and Ms. Fiorina used the same lawyer to negotiate their book contracts (her book comes out next fall), recalled Ms. Fiorina s dazzling presentation at an Allen & Company conference in 2004, for example. Good cheer was not universal at the event, which was held at Hearst s new headquarters in Midtown Manhattan. Particularly when Ms. Fiorina, the former chairwoman and chief executive of Hewlett-Packard, was asked about Thomas J. Perkins, the former H.P. director who set off a firestorm when he quit the board in protest over the company s investigation into news leaks. MORE ONLINE 8.
