WWD Shelf Life Fans All Over Looking East By Stephanie D. Smith 10/18/06 http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/110054 SHELF LIFE: The hype surrounding the launch of Vogue Living may have been overblown. For one, executives are insisting Vogue Living is a special interest publication that does not have a definite regular frequency. Its 500,000 rate base includes 300,000 copies that will be polybagged to Vogue subscribers with household incomes over $100,000, or a net worth of over $1 million, or a home valued at more than $500,000. At present, Vogue has scheduled only one additional edition of Living for some time next year. According to a Vogue spokeswoman, "Moving forward you will see different Vogue products. Some will be new launches, some will be stand-alone issues." By comparison, Men's Vogue was greenlighted after its first issue and published four issues in 2006. Perhaps a sign of Cond? Nast's more limited goals for the title is that Vogue Living, which hit newsstands Tuesday, looks exactly like, well, Vogue. It reads more like a fashion magazine than a shelter title, with glossy spreads of regular Vogue characters. Jennifer Lopez, who graces the cover, Amanda Brooks, Karolina Kurkova and Aerin Lauder are featured in the spreads wearing elaborate ball gowns by Rochas and Balenciaga. Said Hamish Bowles, editor in chief of Vogue Living: "We wanted to do as much as we could to anchor it to big Vogue by embracing women who are in the orbit of Vogue, some of them under the radar, others more boldface." FANS ALL OVER: While the modern wonder called cable television can bring international programming to American households, Nina Garcia realized the reach of "Project Runway" during Paris Fashion Week. The Elle fashion director and judge on the Bravo reality show stayed at the Plaza Ath?n?e, on the same floor as the Princess of Thailand, Her Royal Highness Siriwanwaree Nareeratana. At one point Garcia who is clearly warming to the spotlight tried to get onto the elevator, Nareeratana's bodyguards approached her and said her highness would like to meet her. Turns out the 18-year-old princess is an aspiring designer in Thailand and a "Project Runway" fan. In broken English, related Garcia, the princess said, "I watch you and Heidi [Klum] and Michael [Kors]!" the stars of the show. And like many "Project Runway" followers, finalist Michael Knight was her highness' favorite to win. "They all like Michael!" said Garcia of Knight's popularity. "Most people like Michael, most fashion people like Jeffrey [Sebelia]. I've been interacting with editors for three weeks [at the shows], they all like Jeffrey." Both camps will find out who wins during tonight's finale, which Nareeratana will be watching via satellite. MORE ONLINE 2. Market Watch How Time.com can make Venerable seem cool By Jon Friedman 10/18/06 http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/Story.aspx?guid= %7B72802B5D%2D0D57%2D464D%2D855B%2DAC87E0495F06%7D Early in the Internet's brief but memorable history, many shortsighted editors and writers dismissed it as a necessary evil. At Time, plenty of journalists regarded the Web as little more than a second-rate version of the proud, 83-year-old newsweekly. They approached the task of writing for the Web with all the enthusiasm of someone about to undergo a root canal. Time could have easily fulfilled a big opportunity online. It had the editorial talent and, presumably, enough of parent Time Warner s big bucks to be a big success. One reason why Time.com failed to excel was that it lacked a commitment by Time Inc. The best sites boast witty writers, adventurous columnists, nifty graphics and unorthodox layouts. In other words, they have an unmistakable identity. Skeptics, though, routinely dismissed Time because of its trademark - the magazine's utter predictability, rooted in consistency, from week to week. Rarely, they griped, would one of Time's cover even try to surprise a reader. Now, the Internet is hot, advertisers are lining up and Time Inc.'s braintrust is giving the company's publishers and top editors their marching orders: meet the challenge on the Web or else. MORE ONLINE 3. Folio Magazines.com Becomes First Subscription Agent to Undergo New ABC Evaluation By Marrecca Fiore 10/16/06 http://www.foliomag.com/viewmedia.asp?prmMID=6652&prmID=1 Franklin, Tennessee-based, magazines.com has committed to be the first consumer magazine subscription agent to undergo a new Audit Bureau of Circulations program that evaluates the agent s standard operating practices to ensure its compliance with ABC s circulation bylaws and rules, ABC announced in a statement today. The new Agent Compliance Evaluation (ACE) program was approved by ABC s board of directors earlier this year and is its first qualitative evaluation designed for consumer magazine subscription agents. Under the program, ABC auditors conduct the evaluation using a control review process and transactional testing procedures to obtain reasonable assurance that agents under review are capable of conforming to the established ABC definitions, rules and policies governing subscription sales and reporting. MORE ONLINE 4. Jossip Jan Min Recycles What Works, Even if She Didn t Come Up With It By Staff 10/18/06 http://www.jossip.com/ When we saw this week's Us Weekly (above left), it wasn't Britney Spears' 26 pound weight loss that grabbed our attention. Nor was it seeing a photo of Britney in something other than unflattering shorty jean shorts and a post-maternity top. Rather, it was the unsettling feeling that we'd seen this cover somewhere before. But where? To be fair, Janet Jackson's cover was the mag's best-selling issue to date. And after last week's Whitney Houston newsstand sales bomb, it seems Jann Wenner has handed back the reigns to editor Janice Min. Though, to be sure, she was on maternity leave when the Janet cover hit. MORE ONLINE ************ Send us your whisper jobs! ************ Ed hears ...
