RELOADING

Ellegirl is getting a new lease on life — just not in print. Hachette Filipacchi Media shuttered the teen title after the June/July issue to focus on its online offering. Come Monday, the company will relaunch the Web site Ellegirl.com, which now will have video content, daily mobile text alerts and other interactive bells and whistles (such as saving articles to a personalized "favorites" area) that teen girls love. The site also will include original content on fashion, beauty, health and entertainment, but will have virtually no remnants of the old magazine. Target will be an exclusive sponsor of the site and its new mobile and text offerings for the first month.

MORE ELLE

Elle Decor has its third executive editor this year: Mitchell Owens, who worked at the magazine until 2003, has returned from his most recent post as senior interior design editor at Traditional Home magazine. He is replacing Eileen Daspin, who was hired in March from The Wall Street Journal. "I don't think it was the best fit for us or for her, but I think she's a very talented editor," said Elle Decor editor in chief Margaret Russell. "At the end of the day, I'm running a business, not a sorority, and my job is to create the strongest staff possible."

REEL TIME

Glamour's second Reel Moments series premiered in Hollywood at the Director's Guild on Monday night, and it was clear that what began as a marketing hook has become an event. "It's arrived, don't you think?" asked Robin Wright Penn, who starred in one of the three short films, which deal with the topic of love. In keeping with the theme, Glamour publisher/movie producer Bill Wackerman persuaded Cartier to become a presenting sponsor, and the company's Love Collection jewelry had cameos in each of the shorts. In addition, a pregnant Bryce Dallas Howard, who directed the short "Orchids," wore Cartier diamonds for the evening.

DESIGNING WOMEN

In a time when reality television is giving just about anyone his 15 minutes of fame, celebrities come from many arenas these days — there are chefs, clothing designers and even architects. Now interior designers want their turn, and Architectural Digest is out to help them. The magazine has paired four interior designers with Roberto Coin jewelry to create a four-page advertising section in its November issue. Roberto Coin has advertised extensively with the magazine in the past and the decorators who will grace the pages include Charlotte Moss, Victoria Hagan, Kelly Hoppen and Alexa Hampton, said a spokesman. Who knows, maybe Architectural Digest is onto something: Bravo is working on a reality series, "Top Design," that will show interior designers competing against one another. It will be hosted by Todd Oldham and feature Margaret Russell, Elle Decor's editor in chief, as a judge. A Bravo spokeswoman said an air date has not been determined.

Digital Newsstand Zinio.com Reports 154 Percent Growth in Transactions Over 2005
By Marrecca Fiore

Zinio Inc., an online newsstand service that sells digital subscriptions and copies of magazines like Businessweek, Playboy, Car & Driver and Elle, says its Web site has experienced a 154 percent increase in transactions for the first eight months of this year, compared to the same period in 2005, the company said in statement released today.

The site, which partners with Hearst, IDG, McGraw-Hill, Primedia, Hachette Filipacchi, Playboy Enterprises, Rogers Media, Transcontinental, and Ziff Davis, delivered more than 10.9 million digital magazines between January 1 and August 31 of this year, and more than 55 million since 2002. Zinio.com, which has about 3.4 million registered users, also reported the monthly transactions, including subscription and single copy sales, are up to 166 percent compared to monthly transaction in 2005. On average, according to the statement from Zinio, the site’s visitors conduct more than 21,500 transactions each month.

"The steady growth in digital subscriptions has confirmed that there is a segment of our readership who wants the convenience of receiving their magazines online," said Jack Kliger, CEO of Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S., in a statement. "The digital editions are also extending our well-known brands to a new audience -- particularly the college student whose only continuous address during school years is usually their email address."

More Low-Brow Departures From High-Brow Culture + Travel?
By Staff
October 19, 2006
http://www.jossip.com/gossip/culture-travel/more-lowbrow-depatures-from-highbrow-culture-travel-20061019

After the gut-wrenching departures that Culture + Travel magazine has already been through afer just one issue – with editorial director James Truman making his exit with a grand London announcement, followed by CFO James Conley – we hear the magazine's editor-in-chief (and former Elle Decor exec editor) Michael Boodro is also considering pulling a Roman Polanski and fleeing the scene. With overseer Louise MacBain's interests falling elsewhere (namely, her self-titled foundation), Boodro is only the latest to clash with the Canadian dame. Editorial control, we're told, isn't the issue; like Truman and Conley, it's MacBain's dwindling willingness to open her checkbook.
