(Just a Few of) the Worst Mag Covers of All Time!
By Simon Dumenco
10/22/06
http://adage.com/columns/article?article_id=112594

Right now, possibly the very minute you're reading this, a bunch of magazine
editors and executives are sitting in windowless conference rooms at the
Arizona Biltmore Resort and Spa in Phoenix. They're slowly losing the will to
live as they silently wish that the doofuses sitting on the panel at the front
of the room would wrap it up already. Yes, it's time again for the annual
American Magazine Conference! Yee-haw! Let's everybody compare notes about just
how clinically depressed everyone is! (Except, of course, for guest speaker
Rachael Ray.)

Last year the festivities were punched up a bit by the American Society of
Magazine Editors' announcement of the "Top 40 Magazine Covers of the Last 40
Years" (that famous Annie Leibovitz Rolling Stone shot of a naked John Lennon
curled around Yoko Ono was No. 1). This year ASME's kicking off a new thing:
its first Best Cover Contest. Yawn.

That's simply not good enough for me. I want something epic, sweeping,
historical. Which is why I'm kicking off my own competition: Media Guy's Top 41
Worst Magazine Covers of the Last 41 Years. To get things going, I'm presenting
a starter list of nominees from my own personal cabinet of horrors. These are
all from just the past six years, so I'm particularly eager to hear from
readers -- any art directors out there with decades worth of atrocities? -- who
have favorite deliciously bad covers dating as far back as 1965. Let the
competition ... begin.

Memo Pad: Blanchard's New Home... A Single Lens
By Amy Wicks and Samantha Conti
10/23/06
http://wwd.com/issue/article/110137

BLANCHARD'S NEW HOME: Wenner Media is cementing its commitment to the Web by
heading to the wild side   it's brought on Keith Blanchard, the madcap former
editor in chief of Maxim, in the new position of executive director online to
oversee all of the company's Web sites. Blanchard actually has been working
with Wenner on a project basis, first with Us Weekly's Web redesign   which
launched after Labor Day   and now he's focusing on Rolling Stone's site. Next
up is the launch of Men's Journal's new and improved site, set for mid-2007.
Blanchard's first official day is Oct. 30; he could not be reached at press
time.

A SINGLE LENS: Tyler Br?l?, the founder of that temple to hedonistic minimalism
Wallpaper, has a new title on the boil: Monocle, which will launch worldwide in
mid-February. An official announcement is expected today. The English-language
magazine, which initially will be skewed more toward men, will feature a mix of
stories on global affairs and geopolitical issues, as well as culture, design,
fashion and consumer goods. And since no print title can exist these days
without an online component, a Web site with broadcast rather than print
content will launch a few weeks before the magazine. "I'm so tired of hearing
from all corners of the media that print is dead," proclaimed Br?l?. "Well,
it's not. It's a time when magazines should be pulling up their socks and
turning out more fabulous, more confident, more robust products."

AMC Report: The Devil Wears A Coveted Title
By Jossip Editors
10/23/06
http://www.jossip.com/gossip/american-magazine-conference/
amc-report-the-devil-wears-a-coveted-title-20061023.php

The first reports are coming in from this year's American Magazine Conference
in Phoenix   where the booze clock, which began counting down yesterday, was
reduced to just three days   and at the top of the list is the honoring of
Vogue's Anna Wintour, as Editor of the Year. (More, meanwhile, took home the
Magazine of the Year award.) Naturally, every report of Anna's new title
carries with it some sort of Devil Wears Prada anecdote (Evidence A, Evidence
B, and so forth). Her accolades precede her: Boosting newsstand sales by 3.5
percent; raising overall circ by 6.5 percent. Yes, these are the numbers of a
publishing queen.

And yet, in all the melee, it wasn't just Janice Min and Bonnie Fuller's
absences that had people talking. That ELLEgirl's Christina Kelly was not
honored had many baffled. Or, you know, at the very least, us.

Ex-G+J Prez Joins First Round Bids For Time Inc.'s Time 4
By Fishbowl Editors
10/23/06
http://mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/

First round bids are due for Time Inc.'s Time 4 media and Parenting groups on
Wednesday, and while no clear frontrunners have emerged, some interesting
players are looking to get back in the magazine game. FishbowlNY hears former
G+J USA president Russell Denson is looking at the magazine group for a
possible acquisition, as is American Media Inc., Florida-based publisher of
Star and National Inquirer, which would purchase the titles in order to resell
them. [Folio: also reported the buy-and-flip scenario last week.]

Denson, who was removed as G+J president after the company's women's magazines
were acquired by Meredith for $350 million last year, is also rumored to be in
the running for American Media Inc. non-celebrity titles on the block,
including Muscle & Fitness, Flex and Mira!. "He's looking to get back in the
game," says an industry source.

In terms of price, the Time Inc. titles may fetch wildly varying bids, an
industry source told FishbowlNY, before coming down in the second round, when
the bidders are able to do "more than kick the tires." But it doesn't take much
beyond tire-kicking to realize Time 4's struggles

Anna Wintour Named Editor Of The Year
By Fishbowl Editors
10/23/06
http://mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/

Anna Wintour, editrix of Vogue, ire of PETA and inspiration of the
book-turned-film Devil Wears Prada, has been named editor of the year by
Advertising Age, which announced its annual A-List here at the American
Magazine Conference in Phoenix.

Despite the prevailing notion that nothing more could possibly be said about
Kevin Federline's choice of bedtime wear, In Touch Weekly was named to the
A-List at #10. People, Vogue and New York were named no.s 6, 5 and 4,
respectively. Cond? Nast's home-a-log Domino and Everyday With Rachael Ray were
named launches of the year.

Despite folding Organic Style, Rodale was named publishing company of the year.
Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia CEO Susan Lyne was named executive of the year,
in part for keeping Stewart's Living afloat while Martha was "crotcheting" in a
West Virginia penitentiary.

I am looking for a roommate to move into my apartment Nov 1. The apartment has
been converted into two bedrooms. It has hardwood floors, with brand new
kitchen appliances and a marble tile bathroom. It's also facing the garden (not
the street) which is good, because it's really quiet for a NYC apartment. The
area is in a great location with lots of restaurants, bars and shopping places.
It's an elevator and doorman building, very clean and well-maintained, with
laundry in the basement. Please contact jennifer.weitsen@nyu.edu if interested.

...that Four Weeks Magazine (www.fourweeksmag.com), a new online women's
lifestyle publication recently featured in Crain's New York, seeks freelance
writers who focus on food, DIY or travel trends. We're seeking writers who can
pitch us ideas as well as take on assignments. We're especially looking for
writers with food, DIY or travel blogs. Food writers will review food, spot
trends and write about product innovations in the industry. DIY writers will
interview experts and authors for fun and easy craft projects. Travel writers
sadly will *not* be sent around the world on all expense-paid journeys.
Instead, they'll be reporting on travel trends. Please have some background or
specialized interest in just one of these topics. We're not looking for
generalists for these departments. Four Weeks is a bit different from the rest
it's the first magazine tailored to each week of a woman's monthly hormone
cycle. You don't need to know about hormones to write for us. But our magazine
is comprised of four mini-magazine, each with its own theme, so you need to
keep that in mind when pitching. You can find out more by reading our writer's
guidelines (www.fourweeksmag.com/writersguidelines.htm). Our pay is modest, but
the articles are short (300 to 500 words) and you get a byline. Great for

the email to editors@fourweeksmag.com. Attachments will not be opened. (OK to
mention Ed)

...that BiZBash Media is looking for a smart, energetic junior editor who can
go from a film premiere to a product launch to an after-party at night, and
then write snappy, well-reported stories for our audience of event planners
during the day. BiZBash publishes a magazine and Web site for the special event
industry. We focus on the style and marketing strategy of events, so our
editors attend all kinds of events--magazine promotions, press conferences,
trade shows--to write brief stories that serve as marketing case studies. Our
event coverage features innovative and effective ideas for our readers, as well
as behind-the-scenes details: Who designed the flowers? Who hired the wait
staff? Who designed the invitations? We also watch for trends, new products and
venues, industry news and gossip, and event leaders who have compelling stories
to share with our readers. We're looking for a journalist with 1 to 2 years of
writing and reporting experience for a Web site, magazine, or newspaper, who
can turn around tight, well-researched stories quickly, and juggle several
projects at once. This is a great opportunity to get a crash course in Southern
California's event scene--as long as you can deliver smart, business-minded
stories for our niche audience. To apply, please send a cover letter including
salary requirements, resume, and relevant clips to L.A. bureau chief Alesandra
Dubin at adubin@bizbash.com with "ASSISTANT EDITOR" in the subject line. (OK to
mention Ed)
