Factcheckers: The Janitors of the Magazine Industry
***************
Sez Factwell McCheckermeister, Ed's Blogging Factchecker: "Nobody wants to clean up other people's crap and that's exactly what fact-checkers do. We're the janitors of the magazine industry. Writers and editors often get real lazy and rely on the humble fact-jockey to do their work for them. There are some days when I'd prefer the editors to just take a big shit on the proofs and ask me to correct it. I'd take it to the head, flush it, put that nice-smelling blue stuff in all the toilets, and call it a day without ever having to figure out just who the f*ck Brody Jenner is. Sure would make my life easier...Now pardon me while I adjust my velvet robe, repack my corncob pipe, and tell my editor there's no 'W' in 'Britney Spears'."

Memo Pad: Mistery Solved... Top Stuff... Three's A Charm...

MYSTERY SOLVED: The mystery behind Victoria Hearst's message left on one of the large banners at the Oct. 9 Hearst Tower opening gala has been solved. In writing at the bottom of one of the banners appeared: "The [Hearst] company belongs to the God of Israel. We must bless others." The author claims she tried to remind her family and visitors to the building that Hearst's good fortune and its stunning tower were gifts from God to be shared.

"The Hearst Tower is a gift, and we should use it to bless others. The company doesn't belong to us. It belongs to the Lord. Everything belongs to the Lord," Hearst told WWD in a phone interview Monday.

TOP STUFF: After five months, Stuff finally has an official editor in chief. Dan Bova will take the top title after serving as executive editor since 2005 and stepping in as acting editor in chief when Jimmy Jellinek was tapped in June to become editor of Maxim.

Bova joined Stuff in 2000 as senior features editor, then left in 2003 to move to California and become a segment producer for "Jimmy Kimmel Live."

THREE'S A CHARM: When she was appointed editor in chief of Town & Country editor 13 years ago, Pamela Fiori writes in the magazine's 160th anniversary issue on newsstands now, she intended to fight "some of the long-held perceptions about the magazine: that it was elitist, frivolous, exclusive, a private club for members only, for the horsey set, snobby, aloof — and, worst of all, skewed to a white audience." Well, while no one would mistake the magazine's current incarnation for Mother Jones (or Essence, for that matter), it can no longer be accused of being unrepentantly white. The November issue, for example, features an African-American model in an ensemble, and more diversity is in the gatefold.

That reflects the new face of affluence, Fiori said, claiming to have been approached in "department stores. Someone will come up to me, very often a young black woman, to thank me for what we have done, and the fact that we have taken notice that there is a whole huge group of very sophisticated, well-dressed, well-educated women and men from different backgrounds."

And the Winner Is…: Glamour is rolling out the red carpet on Monday to celebrate its annual Women of the Year awards, which will be presented at Carnegie Hall. More than 100 women including past winners, from Salma Hayek to Madeleine Albright, are part of a board that nominated and voted for nominees, including Iman and Angela, Margherita and Rosita Missoni. Iman is being honored for her work for Keep a Child Alive, an AIDS medication charity. "I was inspired by how committed she was to it," said Cindi Leive, the magazine's editor in chief. "She has raised the profile of African-based philanthropy and kids with HIV in this country." Iman, who will be wearing Bill Blass, said she was surprised by the award and counts her husband, David Bowie, as a huge support system.

As for the Missoni women, Leive referred to their fashion house as the "only female fashion dynasty." "I am very pleased by this international recognition of the Missoni female wing," added Angela Missoni. In her own life, she said she admires working women who also manage to take care of their families.

Full Nelson: Time Inc. Editor-in-Chief John Huey has grown tired of overseeing the women's title In Style, and has handed the reins over to Martha Nelson. The brass is proud of its major fashion title, but over the past year or so was said to have worried that the magazine needed a freshening up.

When Isolde Motley left her high-level post as Time Inc.'s corporate editor, the task of overseeing the title went to Huey, who admittedly had little experience in the field. Nelson, however, is expected to be a lot more hands-on.

She was the founding editor, before she was tapped to be the managing editor of People. She handed off day-to-day responsibility and moved up to be the uber editor of the People Group earlier this year.

Folio: Show Keynote Roundup: Meredith Corp., Time Inc. Executives Weigh-In on State of the Industry
By Linda Zebian
10/26/06
http://www.foliomag.com/viewmedia.asp?prmMID=6673&prmID=1

The publishing business is changing rapidly and no one can say for sure where the industry is headed, says Meredith Corporation’s editorial director Mike Lafavore. In his midday keynote address to hundreds of attendees at the Folio: Show in New York on Tuesday, Lafavore discussed the eight things he’s learned in his more than 30 years of experience in the business, while also touching on the challenges of today’s industry.” We are in the middle of some kind of storm and no one knows what it looks like on the other side,” he said.

What Lafavore says hasn’t changed, is the fact that the reader is still in charge. As he explained his number one rule, he compared the threat of television in the 1950s, to the similar threat of the rise of the Internet and other technologies of today. “On average, consumers spend about two and a half hours a day online,” he said, “and 34 minutes a day reading magazines. We’re not in the printing words on paper business anymore, we’re in the information business.”

In the next five years, according to Lafavore, mobile digital devices will be the norm, where consumers will be able to carry a flexible, interactive touch screen, capable of downloading magazines to the palm of their hands with the touch of a button. “How do we compete with instant information?” he asked the audience. “Readers can decide how they want to receive their information and if we’re not willing to get that information to them the way they want it, they’ll get it somewhere else.”

Furnished room available, as is, for sublet in a 4-bedroom apartment in Chinatown for 1-3 months beginning in January. The apartment is located on Pell and Bowery, just five feet away from NYC's famous Joe's Shangai, in the oldest row house in Manhattan. There's a main living room with 17-foot ceilings, a den, two bathrooms, washer/dryer in apartment, central A/C, premium cable with HBO (both in the LR and in my room) and wireless internet. My room has a window, and is furnished with a queen size bed, antique desk and chest of drawers, 25-inch TV, and DVD player. Apt is about a 5-8 minute walk to the N/R/Q/W/4/5/B/D, 12 minutes to the A/C, and 15 to the 1/9. Rent is $1100 including utilities. You will probably have to be interviewed by my (male) roommates: one who works in media, one who's in med school, and another who works in finance. If interested, please email Vanessa, at vjuare@yahoo.com.

Large bedroom available in gorgeous Hudson Heights 3BR. 3-month sublet of the large bedroom (with 2 windows and 2 closets) in nice apt. off 181st St. on the far west side (elevator building, laundry in basement, part-time doorman). The apartment is on the market right now, but it won't sell before January, and it could take up to a year. Pics are here: http://halstead.com/detail.aspx?id=1159050. It's a 2BR, but we've turned the private dining room into a third bedroom. Roommates are laid-back guys that are not home much. Sorry, no smokers and no drugs. Great, up-and-coming neighborhood, with lots of cool young professionals moving in. Not a lot of nightlife, but great restaurants and amazing parks. It's a few blocks from the Cloisters and seconds from the jogging path along the Hudson River. Since the A train goes express, it's just 20 minutes from Columbus Circle.
