******* Ed's favorite salad: Caesar with grilled chicken on top. With parmesan. Lots of parmesan. Who's with him? ******* ******* News ******* 1. The Montreal Mirror Digging through a stupid war: Investigative reporter Seymour Hersh discusses civilian casualties, American ignorance _and leading questions By Matthew Hays October 30, 2006 http://www.montrealmirror.com/2006/102606/news2.html Seymour Hersh has become famous as the American journalist who has exhaustively covered both the Vietnam War and the current Iraq War. In 1969, he won the Pulitzer for his Vietnam coverage, which included his exposing the My Lai massacre. As a regular New Yorker contributor, Hersh has managed to break numerous crucial stories, most notably uncovering treatment of prisoners in the Abu Ghraib scandal. Hersh was also the first journalist to state unequivocally that weapons of mass destruction would never be found in Iraq. With his staunch criticism of those in power, Hersh has acquired his share of enemies. Pentagon adviser Richard Perle once called Hersh the closest thing we have to a terrorist. Hersh will be speaking at McGill today, Thursday, Oct. 26. The Mirror spoke to him over the phone from New York. MORE ONLINE 2. WWD Memo Pad By Stephanie D. Smith and Irin Carmon October 30, 2006 http://wwd.com/issue/article/110301 COVER STARS: Those New Yorker, Rolling Stone and Time magazine covers bashing President Bush and his administration may have won the American Society of Magazine Editors' first-ever Cover Competition at the American Magazine Conference last week, but good looks don't always translate into good newsstand sales. Both New Yorker covers for Sept. 19, 2005, and Feb. 27 were average newsstand performers in their respective six-month periods, but Rolling Stone's cover with Bush wearing a dunce cap was its strongest regular issue for the period (May 4; 176,055 copies) and outperformed last year's May 5 issue, which sold just 93,900 copies, by 87 percent. And the rule seems to apply not only to Bush, but to Hollywood celebrities, as well. Just look at the newsstand performance of major titles over the first six months of the year, according to figures from the Audit Bureau of Circulations. WHO YOU KNOW: How did House & Garden editor in chief Dominique Browning convince Uma Thurman to cohost tonight's book party for artist Marielle Bancou's "The Color of Love?" Browning penned the introduction to the book, which features love poetry from the likes of Sophocles and James Joyce, handwritten against deeply saturated pools of color. But it just so happens that Bancou is Thurman's godmother (her father and Bancou's late husband had Buddhism in common), and the artist is reportedly preparing a massive screen of her work for Thurman's apartment. Bancou's apartment is featured in the November issue of the magazine. MORE ONLINE 3. WSJ online Time Inc. Picks Its Web Winners --_And Its Flagship Isn't One By MATTHEW KARNITSCHNIG and SARAH ELLISON October 30, 2006 http://online.wsj.com/public/article/ SB116217358905407400-EqSJUwMhZafWfCKB_Xa0tY5xx6k_20071030.html?mod=blogs For a dozen years, Time Inc. veered from one Internet initiative to another in a quest to figure out how to make money on the Web. Almost nothing worked. On Thursday, Time Inc. Chief Executive Ann Moore went before the board of parent company Time Warner Inc. with an Internet strategy that concentrates resources on Sports Illustrated, People and the company's business magazines -- the titles seen as having the most online growth potential. What's missing? Time magazine, the publisher's flagship title. MORE ONLINE 4. MediaWeek AMC Report: Publishers Learn to Embrace the Web By Lucia Moses October 30, 2006 http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/print/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id= 1003316043 Fear of the Internet is so five years ago. The transformation is far from complete, but publishers who once fretted about cannibalization have come to embrace the idea that they have to deliver their content where and how the consumer wants it. Speaking at this year s American Magazine Conference, Ann Moore, chairman/CEO of Time Inc., was unambiguous about the importance she places on hiring for the company s online operations. The A-team s on it, she declared. Indeed, at the conference, themed Beyond the Page, Moore and other executives shared ways they re extending their brands using the Web, events and other extensions to keep up with the way consumers use media today. But alongside the self-congratulating and optimism was much angst and criticism from within and outside the industry about the need to do more faster. Magazines aren t leveraging their ability to gather reader feedback, pointed out Tim Armstrong, vp, ad sales for Google, who addressed the conference. If you look at the number of people using magazines, you have a huge opportunity to capture those users online, he said. MORE ONLINE 5. Chicago Tribune Town & Country explores evolution of society parties By James Warren October 30, 2006 http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/chi-0610300245oct30,1,4117140.story Nick Diver, a party-loving character in F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, "Tender is the Night," craved "a party where there's a brawl and seductions and people going home with their feelings hurt and women passed out in the cabinet de toilette." Nick might feel frustrated these days, suggests the November Town & Country in an overview of how a culturally revealing social institution among the elite has changed during the magazine's own 160-year history. "Our aspirations, our ideas of glamor, our choice of friends, our notions of what is pleasing and what is worth rejoicing in -- all are on display when we give or go to a party." For example, the once-driving notion of being understated and decorous, with taste-setters such as New York's Mrs. William Astor decreeing who constituted the A-list of the 1850s worthy of her food and drink (usually at afternoon affairs), changed with the coming of post-Civil War fortunes and a craving for lavish gatherings at which to show off. MORE ONLINE 6. Jossip Paris Hilton is sorry she drove drunk, and sorry she can t say it on video By Jossip staff October 27, 2006 http://www.jossip.com/gossip/paris-hilton/ paris-hilton-is-sorry-she-drove-drunk-and-sorry-she-cant-say-it-on-video-20061027.php For all the attention Paris Hilton's anti-drinking and driving PSA in Seventeen magazine is receiving, it's worth noting: It almost didn't happen. Paris who made light of her September DUI incident is appearing on the December issue of Atoosa Rubenstein's book and is also featured inside in a PSA ad (click image for larger version in pop-up window), which reads, "All it takes is one drink to mess with the way you drive it clouds your judgment and slows your reflexes. Don t take any chances. It just isn t worth it." The magazine also plugs a video PSA from Paris, supposedly available on Seventeen.com. Except you won't find it there now, when the issue hits on Nov. 7, or at any point thereafter. We hear Hilton's power attorney Howard Weitzman forced Paris to back out of recording the clip. With her court appearance on the horizon (she faces misdemeanor DUI charges), a source tells us, Weitzman didn't want any chance of a judge or the prosecutor thinking Hilton was using the incident for publicity instead of being genuinely sorry. So while the PSA plugs the website (it went to press before Weitzman's decision) there is no Hilton clip on Seventeen.com but the one where she responds to being called an "oversized human condom?" Yeah, that's still on TMZ. MORE ONLINE ************ Whisper Jobs ************ Ed hears ... that OK! Magazine is seeking an administrator/editorial assistant in their expanding Los Angeles office.
