******* Time Inc. abruptly removed Eric Pooley as the managing editor of Fortune magazine yesterday, and named Andrew Serwer, a senior editor at large, to succeed him, becoming the magazine??™s third top editor in less than six years. John Huey, editor in chief of Time Inc., a unit of Time Warner, gave no reason for the change, which was effective immediately, and did not return calls seeking comment. Mr. Serwer said in an interview that Mr. Huey had told him over the weekend that he wanted him to take the helm. ???I found out about it a couple of days ago,??? he said. ???It was a surprise to me that John wanted me to do this job.??? He added that Mr. Huey ???has a way of making surprising moves sometimes.??? MORE ONLINE
2. Folio
Six to ten companies have made it into the second round of bidding on the 18 titles in the Time4 and Parenting groups, with notices going out today, sources told Folio: late Tuesday. Second-round bids are due by the end of November. Survivors are said to include Bonnier, Charles McCurdy??™s Apprise Media, CurtCo CEO Bill Curtis, and Kelso & Co./VSS-backed Russell Denson, the former president and CEO of Gruner + Jahr. Final sale price estimates have not changed much, with a price falling somewhere between $200 million and $300 million. Despite a mix of strategic and private equity-backed bidders, observers are saying strategics will have the edge. ???This is a tough deal for private-equity backed bidders to win,??? says one source involved in the bidding process, and, notably, is backed with private equity, ???because the performance doesn??™t support much debt to finance the transaction. Strategics can take a longer view about the turnaround.??? MORE ONLINE

We just received confirmation that Cond?© Nast, owner of Wired and other magazines/websites, acquired Boston-based Reddit earlier this morning, and will make the announcement later today. The price is not being disclosed. All four reddit employees will relocate from Boston to Wired??™s San Francisco office and become part of Wired Digital. Reddit, founded and funded in 2005, is a YCombinator company (see our interview with YCombinator founder Paul Graham here). The two original founders are Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, and they were later joined by Christopher Slowe and Aaron Swartz. Reddit is a social news site that has always played second fiddle to Digg, although Reddit does have an active and loyal userbase. Users praise Reddit for having a very quick load time and no advertising. Like Digg, news stories on Reddit are submitted by users, and other users vote up or down on the story. When it gets enought ???up??? votes, the story appears on the home page. MORE ONLINE
4. TMZ
Brad Pitt struts his stuff on the cover of December's Vanity Fair -- and TMZ has learned that no one was more surprised to see the steamy cover on stands than Brad himself. A source close to Pitt tells TMZ that Brad shot the photos, taken by artist Robert Wilson, in September 2005, but didn't have any idea at the time -- or anytime since -- that they would be used for the cover of VF. Pitt had agreed to be in Wilson's avant-garde video art project last year, and signed a legal release at the time for the still and video images taken in the shoot. But until the Vanity Fair cover emerged this week, Pitt didn't know that he would be the magazine's coverboy. Reps for Vanity Fair tell TMZ, "In a letter dated October 5, 2006, and sent to Pitt care of Brillstein-Grey [Pitt's managers], Wilson informed Pitt that a still image from his portrait was going to be featured in the December art issue of Vanity Fair." A source says that Pitt never saw the letter. MORE ONLINE 5.
