COSMO CONVENTION

In all the hype about the Web, the publishing strategy that gets lost in the noise is overseas expansion. But those who think it's just a case of planting their flag in a foreign land could take some tips from the editors of the 59 international editions of Cosmopolitan, many of whom were in New York this week for a conference at the Hearst Tower ??” not to mention spa treatments and a few parties.

Thinking of publishing in Indonesia? Don't run any sex stories unless it involves a husband and wife, since sex before marriage there is forbidden. And Fira Basuki, chief editor of the Indonesia edition, said the magazine produces most of its own fashion and beauty content, as opposed to borrowing from the U.S., because women in Indonesia believe white skin without freckles is beautiful, while the flagship magazine features a lot of the opposite. "We try to get as white as we can," Basuki said. "Whitening products and sunblock are the biggest sellers here." The magazine faces its share of opposition from activist groups that want to see women in traditional clothing, but, so far, Basuki has been able to keep the complainers at bay, by softening cleavage shots and easing up on the miniskirts.

SCHOOL??™S IN SESSION

Teen Vogue's Fashion U is already looking toward its sophomore year. The three-day event drew 500 fashion-forward teens ??” including a dozen boys, a 19-year-old Maryland girl with her own public relations firm and a Connecticut girl who hobbled to the panels despite a dislocated knee ??” from 47 states and four countries. Attendees learned the nuts and bolts of fashion through panels and seminars led by members of the fashion elite, including Simon Doonan; Derek Lam; Michelle Sanders, Juicy Couture vice president and fashion director; Catherine Malandrino, and Teen Vogue editors, including Amy Astley.

On Saturday, Tim Gunn, Project Runway judge and Parsons Department of Fashion Design chairman, gave the program a rousing endorsement as he spoke about ways to break out from the crowd when applying to fashion schools. "[Attending Fashion U] should be on your r?©sum?© when you apply. The fact that you came here is impressive," he said. Teen Vogue will make Fashion U an annual franchise, but is approaching it with caution. "Looking forward you want to balance getting it bigger, but maintain the intimacy of it," said vice president and publisher Gina Sanders.

Among Media Elite, A Sweaty Pile-Up of Davos Wannabes
By Michael Calderone

For media figures who have previously made the climb to the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland, a new peak beckons: In planning the January 2007 edition of the event, Davos organizers are quietly passing around a list of prospective members of an even loftier sub-organization, to be known as the International Media Council. Start polishing up those crampons, David Remnick. The New Yorker editor joins Fareed Zakaria, Graydon Carter and other name-brand media figures on the draft, which runs to more than 100 names.

???It??™s kind of like a list of who we think would be wonderful,??? W.E.F. spokeswoman Claudia Gonzalez said. Ms. Gonzalez described the International Media Council as ???just an idea,??? but she confirmed that the W.E.F. is planning to have a ???media council of some sort.??? The project should take a more definite shape within four to six weeks, she said. The W.E.F. already has a few other separate ???communities,??? like the International Business Council (the C.E.O.??™s of Mittal Steel and Chevron are members); the Arab Business Council; and the Young Global Leaders (which includes young university professors, elected officials and high-powered executives).

???They told me that they wanted to create something like it,??? said Mr. Zakaria, the Newsweek International editor and multi-year Davos veteran, about the proposed council. ???That??™s the extent of my knowledge. They have had groups like that in the past. I think they used to have a group grandiosely called the Club of Media Leaders.???

Stewart shows 'em earnings surprise
By Cecile Daurat

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia had a narrower third-quarter loss, beating analysts' forecasts, after magazine advertising sales and revenue from the "Martha" television show increased. The net loss was $25.2 million, or 49 cents a share, compared with a loss of $26.1 million, or 51 cents a share, a year earlier, the New York-based company said yesterday in a statement. Revenue rose 48% to $61.1 million.

Martha Stewart Living benefited from the continuing return of advertisers after founder Martha Stewart completed a prison sentence last year. The company reported a 39% rise in ad pages at its namesake magazine and an 81% jump in pages at Everyday Food. Broadcasting revenue more than tripled, helped by TV and radio shows added in the past year.

"They're clicking on all cylinders," said Robert Routh, a Jefferies & Co. analyst in New York. "All business segments are doing well, including publishing." Shares in Martha Stewart Living rose the most in three months, gaining $1.02, or 5%, to $21.20. The stock is up 22% this year. Advertisers have in the past year returned to the company's magazines, after fleeing when Stewart was convicted of obstruction of justice for lying to investigators probing her sale of shares in biotechnology company ImClone Systems Inc.

Breaking: Upcoming Launch Viv Magazine Actually Tries Something New
By Jon Fine
November 1, 2006
http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/tv/maureen_dowd_snags_rolling_stone_cover_story_on_colbertstewart_46683.asp

The latest take on the digital magazine is here??”and, perhaps unsurprisingly, it is coming from outside the extant magazine-industrial complex.

Viv is an independently published health-and-wellness play with certain New Age overtones aimed at women 35-plus. It??™s set to launch Dec. 1 with a Jan-Feb ??™07 issue. You will never see it on a newsstand. Rather it??™s solely downloadable from the Web, and viewable through Zinio Systems??™ online reader. Zinio has become something of an industry standard for American magazines seeking to translate the magazine experience into something Web-i-fied??”it allows editors page layouts like magazines and lets readers flip through pages, but it also allows advertisers more interactive ads. One potential drawback: You need to download Zinio??™s reader onto your computer to make the entire endeavor work.

A Cliff??™s-notes version of Viv that showcases some of its interactive chops??”one can change the model??™s yoga pose, or toggle between different makeup combinations--for those who have not yet downloaded the Zinio??™s reader can be found at its Web site, vivmag.com.

Maureen Dowd Snags Rolling Stone Cover Story on Colbert-Stewart
By Staff
November 2, 2006
http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/tv/maureen_dowd_snags_rolling_stone_cover_story_on_colbertstewart_46683.asp

The New York Times op-ed columnist snags a double interview with Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert ??” "Stewart-Colbert '08" ??” just in time for those mid-term elections. But lest you thought the story would be merely about Stewart and Colbert, think again. This is Maureen Dowd, after all. Her ???self-deprecating??? lede: I thought Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert might be a little nervous to meet with me.

Nonetheless, we did like the piece, particularly Colbert and Stewart's debate of melon ("The cantaloupe is far superior to the honeydew") and their ripping on Dowd's Radio Shack tape recorder ("'I thought it was a chaise,' Stewart says. 'I was going to lie down on it.'")
