Vanity Unfair: An NRO Symposium

EDITOR'S NOTE: On Friday, Vanity Fair issued a press release highlighting
excerpts of a piece in their January issue on  neoconservative  supporters of
the war in Iraq who today, unsurprisingly, have some negative things to say
about how the war is going and how the Bush administration has been handling
it.

In the wake of the press release   which has gotten considerable play on the
Internet   some of those  neoconservatives  highlighted in the article have
responded to the excerpts and its misrepresentations, in some cases, of what
they said. We collect some of those reactions   including from Eliot Cohen,
David Frum, Frank Gaffney, Michael Ledeen, Richard Perle, and Michael Rubin
below.

Page Six: Times Has Two Sets of Rules

ONCE again, The New York Times is playing favorites. Last week, it was reported
that talented culture writer Lola Ogunnaike was suspended after appearing on
"The View" even though other Times reporters appear regularly on television.
But now we hear Ogunnaike was warned several months ago for another perceived
infraction - when she wrote the cover story for the February issue of Rolling
Stone on Kanye West. "She was told she could not write for any other
publications after that," said our source. Funny - her colleague Maureen Dowd
(who regularly appears on Bill Maher's show and other programs) wrote the
Rolling Stone cover story this month on Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. We bet
Dowd isn't going to get spanked for that. The Times didn't respond to our
requests for comment.

Memo Pad

TAKE TWO: Donatella Versace certainly worked hard while she was in New York
last week. After giving a keynote speech at the WWD/DNR CEO Summit and hosting
a private dinner for Allure editor in chief Linda Wells, the fashion house's
creative director started shooting Versace's spring ad campaigns on Friday.
While the company did not confirm any information about the campaigns, sources
said it has tapped a similar cast of characters to those featured in its fall
ads. Mario Testino, who shot Versace's fall campaign and recent ads with Halle
Berry and Madonna, photographed the men's ads in a Manhattan studio on Friday
with actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers and a female model in a relatively
straightforward (for Versace) style. Meyers also modeled clothes and
accessories for the fall campaign. Meanwhile, the women's ads will feature many
of the same supermodels as the fall ones, which included Kate Moss, Christy
Turlington, Carolyn Murphy, Angela Lindvall and Daria Werbowy.

GRAND DAME: British Vogue   an outcome of world war? There's a lot of offbeat
information British Vogue editor in chief Alexandra Shulman and her team
unearthed during their research for the magazine's 90th anniversary issue,
which hits newsstands in the U.K. today. It's British Vogue's biggest December
issue ever and takes a look back to the year it was founded at the tail end of
World War I, when shipping was disrupted and the Brits couldn't get their
American Vogues. In the latest issue, Shulman and her team pay tribute to much
and varied past coverage: Lee Miller writing about Picasso's 70th birthday,
Evelyn Waugh critiquing D.H. Lawrence, and Samuel Beckett talking about New
York. "People look unhappy here....And I sense a great hostility in the faces
of the men," wrote Beckett.

SI Pumps Up Sportsman Franchise
By Mike Shields

Sports Illustrated plans to get a jumpstart on one of its biggest franchises,
and preroll ads will factor in to its promotion on the Web. The Time Inc.
weekly on Nov. 17 will launch a variety of multiplatform content extensions for
its annual Sportsman of the Year issue.

The official channel will live on SI.com, nearly a month before the magazine s
Sportsman issue lands on newsstands on Dec. 6. During the lead-up to the issue,
the site will feature a regular dosage of original Sportsman-related content,
including daily nominations from top SI writers, along with fan polls, photos,
and archival coverage of past Sportsmen.

More noteworthy is the content being created specifically for the Sportsman s
four flagships sponsors: Heineken, Courtyard by Marriott, Liberty Mutual and
Viagra.  Each of these brands has their own platform for Sportsman,  said SI
Digital president Jeff Price.  From an ad perspective, we are creating original
extensions that are relevant to brands.

Publishers Get Creative With Preroll Ads
By Lucia Moses

As magazines began to dabble with running video on their Web sites, it was only
a matter of time before preroll ads followed. Preroll ads messages that roll
right before the content give publishers a way to make money off their content
and provide marketers with high CPMs once reserved for their broadcast
brethren. For advertisers, they provide another platform for their TV spots.

Preroll ads are the most common of online video ads, according to Forrester
Research: 37 percent of consumers said they ve seen ads before videos start,
versus 22 percent who reported seeing ads alongside the video and 14 percent
who saw ads within or after videos. But with many still running 15 seconds and
longer, publishers risk turning off the viewers they re trying to court.

Three-fourths of online consumers who viewed video content in the past recent
month said they ignore ads before or in streaming video, and 72 percent say
they re too long, according to a 2005 Forrester survey. Asked how often they
interact with online video ads, 90 percent of online consumers said they
seldom  or  never  click on video ads to learn more about advertised products,
Forrester also found.

Casio Inc. will be the presenting sponsor of Dennis Publishing-owned Stuff
magazine's Toys for Bigger Boys gadget showcase in New York Dec. 5, a
partnership that led the company to become a first-time print advertiser with
the January issue.

The ad buy represented a roughly $200,000 deal, according to Casio.

Casio will auction off three digital cameras at the event, which raises money
to benefit the Keep a Child Alive Foundation by auctioning holiday gifts and
gadgets.

Lloyd Grove's Job Prospects: From the Daily News to VF, With a TMZ Layover
By Jossip Staff

lloyd-groves-job-prospects-from-the-daily-news-to-vf-with-a-tmz-layover-20061106.php

Today Liz Smith reported ex-Daily News gossip Lloyd Grove landed within Graydon
Carter's confines at Vanity Fair. We've already spoke to a number of insiders
who are questioning the accuracy of the report, but most are wondering   if his
VF placement is true   what ever happened to Lloyd's claims that he was
starting a new gig "doing something that is multimedia, with components of
Internet and television and print media"? Sure, VanityFair.com just relaunched
as part of Conde Nast's effort to learn how to spell "I-n-t-e-r-n-e-t," but
certainly his VF post isn't the well-rounded media outreach program he had
hinted at, right?

Right.

We're told that Lloyd initially planned on heading to TMZ.com, the
AOL-Telepictures joint venture that most Americans know as "that site with the
Brandon Davis 'firecrotch' video." And, to scratch their scrotum, it's also
that site that broke the Mel Gibson anti-Jew drunk driving tirade. It was as
recently as a few weeks ago, we hear, that Lloyd was in talks with TMZ chief
Harvey Levin about coming on board as the chief East Coaster. Confirms Harvey:
"We talked to him and nothing materialized."
