******* Atoosa Rubenstein, the high-profile editor-in-chief of Seventeen magazine, is leaving the top-selling teen title to launch her own teen-centered Web business, write a book and start a consulting firm specializing in the youth market. Rubenstein said the decision to step down and walk away from a pay package believed to be in the mid- to high six-figure range was hers alone. "I'm a risk taker," she said. "I don't play the game in a safe way. I've never been driven by power or money. I've always had a very strong relationship with our audience, and I hope to develop that in a more immediate and visceral way." MORE ONLINE 2. GawkerGawker EXCLUSIVE: Lots of People Talking About Atoosa Rubenstein's Exit from 'Seventeen' By Gawker Editors 11/07/06 http://www.gawker.com/news/atoosa-rubenstein/gawker-exclusive-lots-of-people-talking-about-atoosa-rubensteins-exit-from-seventeen-212893.php Gawker can EXCLUSIVELY report that, as of this morning, Atoosa Rubenstein's myspace page still lists her as the EIC of Seventeen, making no mention of the fact that she's leaving the book. The Post EXCLUSIVELY reports that the 'Toos plans "to launch her own teen-centered Web business, write a book and start a consulting firm specializing in the youth market," while Jossip EXCLUSIVELY reveals that "Atoosa's contract expired in August... and she's been a free agent ever since. And that hasn't sat well with Cathie Black, whose Hearst house has been left in disarray ever since the 'Toos announced her impending exit." If Atoosa is indeed planning to start her own teen TMZ, do these questions that she recently asked her girl gang represent some kind of market research? 1- What websites do you like the best? Why? 2- Do you prefer My Space or Facebook? Why? 3- How do you feel when you get advertisements texted to your cell phones? 4- Which ad campaigns are your favorites and why? How about the WORST? Why? 5- When do you notice advertisements the most? When watching TV, online, reading a magazine, etc.? 6- What is your favorite form of entertainment? TV shows, websites, magazines, radio? (don't worry - i won't get offended!) 7- How do you feel about ads before movies? How about ads before videos (like did you see the MTV VMA website??)? 8- Do you do other things while you're doing homework? Like watch TV or IM? 9-What's the best invention that's come into your life lately? 10-I'm speaking to a group of entertainment executives (tv, radio, wireless, all of it) - is there anything you want them to know so they can create better products for you?? Think of me as your mouthpiece! And don't be too tired from all my questions to answer this one - it's important because these people WILL listen to us/you! :) MORE ONLINE 3. WWDMemo Pad: The Critics Are In... Still, Like, A Virgin... Caught On Tape... By Irin Carmon, Amy Wicks, Stephanie D. Smith 11/07/06 http://wwd.com/issue/article/110473 THE CRITICS ARE IN: When Joanna Coles ascended to the editorship of Marie Claire, she promised a smarter, sharper magazine that would reach out to the new woman. A season into her position, though, several other top editors have questioned the direction Coles is taking with the magazine. One example is the black-and-white close-up of Sarah Michelle Gellar on this month's cover, which sources said sold less than half of what is customary in its first nine days on the newsstand. Readers may agree: If correct, those figures continue a downward trend that sources said began several months ago and is particularly troublesome for a title that draws about half its circulation from the newsstand. STILL, LIKE, A VIRGIN: Jane's anointed virgin turns 30 today. Last summer, Sarah diMuro, 29, approached the magazine about helping her lose her virginity by her November birthday, and while the accompanying blog chronicling the dates whom Jane set her up with has generated healthy buzz and roughly doubled traffic on the magazine's Web site, it's all been arguably…anticlimactic. That is to say, about 25 Jane-funded, reader-voted-upon dates and several states later, diMuro still hasn't found The One. CAUGHT ON TAPE: Here's another reason why reality television romances end up costing the lovebirds more than their privacy: On Friday, a California court handed Us Weekly a victory in a $20 million defamation suit filed by Britney Spears in December over a story claiming Spears and husband Kevin Federline made a sex tape and feared it would be leaked to the public. In siding with the Wenner weekly, Lisa Hart Cole, a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge, said the story that a married couple has consensual sex on tape was arguably not defamatory, especially since the couple in question filmed their own tragic reality show, "Chaotic," based on their romance, which aired on UPN last year. "The plaintiff has publicly portrayed herself in a sexual way in her performances, in published photographs and in a reality show, ‘Chaotic,'" read the decision. "The purpose of the reality show was to film plaintiff in unscripted, intimate moments during a tour, and achieved its purpose by televising plaintiff filming Federline naked in the shower, plaintiff interviewing Federline during a nighttime bus ride while plaintiff was naked, and otherwise catching plaintiff talking uninhibitedly about her sex life….Given contemporary standards of defamation, which evolve over time, the court cannot find that the statements made in the Us Weekly article about this plaintiff are defamatory…." Spears will cover Us Weekly's legal fees as part of the decision. MORE ONLINE

He's a regular on Page Six and he practically lives on the Today Show, but now Men's Health editor Dave Zinczenko has reached a new level of quasi-fame: His very own drive-by in this month's Vanity Fair. The just-out December issue's "Coaster Correspondence" features Zinczenko helping fictional VF contributor Ed Coaster recover from a stroke by weaning him off bourbon, putting him on a regimen of ab crunches and lat pulldowns, and administering a "marjoram enema." While it may seem like a harmless spoof, the whole thing appears to be an oh-so-inside dig at Zinczenko's history with deceased GQ editor Art Cooper, who suffered a fatal stroke while lunching with him at the Four Seasons. Zinczenko later wrote an editor's note in Men's Health implying that Cooper's personal trainer had killed him, a move that drew an angry rebuttal from the trainer and, according to GQ insiders, was considered beyond tacky by Cooper's widow, Amy Levin Cooper, a former editor in chief of Mademoiselle. Vanity Fair's editor, Graydon Carter, was, of course, a longtime colleague, not to say friend, of both Coopers. "Art and Graydon would have lunch together, but you could tell Graydon felt he was far superior," said one former GQ editor. More to the point, perhaps, Carter had a ringside seat for the verbal pummeling Zinczenko received at the hands of Jon Stewart last fall during a magazine-industry panel. Apparently, watching Zinczenko humiliate himself in front of an audience of his peers didn't satisfy Carter's desire to see the sloganeer-in-chief brought low. MORE ONLINE

We were reminded by celebrity p.r. guru Ken Sunshine at the American Magazine Conference in Arizona of the importance of People magazine to celebri-clients like Lance Bass, who chose the magazine as the forum earlier this year to announce that he was gay. Now that Neil Patrick Harris — a.k.a Doogie Howser, M.D. — has followed suit, we're starting to buy into Sunshine's premise of People as a safe haven from the likes of Perez Hilton. Had Jim McGreevey thought of it, he probably would've opted for People, too. MORE ONLINE 6. JossipUs Weekly Will Not Have to Pay For Kevin Federline's Sophomore Album By Jossip Editors 11/07/06 http://www.jossip.com/gossip/britney-spears/us-weekly-will-not-have-to-pay-for-kevin-federlines-sophomore-album-20061107.phpp> If only Madonna didn't pass on pop music's veritable throne with so much tongue, Britney Spears may have won her $10 million defamation lawsuit against Us Weekly. But between the on-air lesbo kissing and all of Britney's other sexually charged antics pre-Kevin Federline, her fame and fortune rested too highly in causing young, confused girls and teenage boys and their fathers to get a stirring between their legs. Well, that's what the judge decided in her defamation suit brought against the Wenner Media tabloid based on an Oct. 17, 2005 article titled "Brit & Kev: Secret Sex Tape? New parents have new worry." Yes, you know the one: Where Us made up a story about pop culture's least respected couple recording a sex tape and then previewing it in front of their attorneys. While that tape oh-so-suspiciously never surfaced – and with David Hans Schmidt still alive, you know that's an impressive feat for any celeb sex tape that actually exists – Us stood by its story, and the judge ruled in the tabloid's favor last week. Though, to be clear, the judge's decision didn't say anything about whether the article was accurate, just that Britney didn't have a claim of being defamed. You see, saying that a husband and wife had sex and videotaped it – even if untrue – doesn't damage anyone's reputation. Which means we're free to make outlandish claims about a Ryan and Reese tape then? MORE ONLINE 7. AdAgeMagazines as Muses: Hotelier Finds Inspiration in Titles such as 'Wired' By Alice Cuneo 11/06/06 http://adage.com/mediaworks/article.php?article_id=112993 Some people read magazines on the subway. Some clip articles. Some people pile them in hopes of reading them another day. But Chip Conley uses them as inspiration to build boutique hotels. The founder and CEO of Joie de Vivre Hospitality, with 40 California properties and a goal of 60 in the next five years, is a self-described magazine devotee. He models each of his hotels on magazines as a "pathway to get to the right hotel personality," reach a psychographic niche and produce a hotel property with a "soulful personality." "People have a deep emotional connection with their magazines," Mr. Conley said. "The relationship you have with your magazine is like the relationship you have to your mate." MORE ONLINE
