******* Fashion monthlies posted mixed results as they closed out 2006, according to publishers' estimates and figures from Publishers Information Bureau. While the automotive sector remained a challenge for most publishers this year, they made up the difference from the more bustling fashion, retail, beauty and pharmaceutical categories. Retail was one of the strongest this year — through October, the category grew 10 percent in pages and 19.7 percent in revenue, to $1.3 billion, according to PIB. But in addition to simply following the money, publishers saw the importance of devising big marketing ideas to attract advertisers to their pages, whether it was Cond? Nast Media Group's Fashion Rocks or a multiplatform marketing program for an individual title, such as the Men's Health Urbanathlon. Among the women's titles, Elle posted a 14.3 percent gain in pages to 2,363, on top of a 10 percent increase last year. Glamour, whose Real Moments marketing program went into its second year, grew pages 7.5 percent to 1,889, while ad pages for Cosmopolitan fell 3.9 percent to 1,740. Glamour's gains came on top of a 6.6 percent rise in pages last year. Harper's Bazaar posted a 9.4 percent gain in ad pages this year, to 1,772, while Allure posted an 8.9 percent increase in pages to 1,556. Allure, which celebrated its 15th anniversary this year, topped a 3.5 percent growth last year over 2004. Conversely, Jane posted a 21 percent drop in ad pages this year, to 592, on top of an 8 percent drop last year. But the 21 percent overall is better than the title's 41 percent falloff in the first half. Teen Vogue overtook Seventeen in yearly ad pages for the second year in a row, but this time by a wider margin. Teen Vogue posted a 22.3 percent gain, to 1,223 pages. That's 234 pages better than Seventeen, which posted a 3.4 percent loss this year. MORE ONLINE

The changes continue in the celebrity magazine world. In Touch and Life & Style magazines welcome new publishers today. Mark Oltarsh was promoted to publisher of In Touch after serving as associate publisher of both magazines, while Neil Goldstein was elevated to publisher of Life & Style after working as publisher of Bauer Publishing's Teen Group. Oltarsh and Goldstein replace Bob Davidowitz, who was publisher of both titles. Life & Style is the fastest-growing newsstand magazine in the country, according to the 2006 ABC Fas-Fax report. The magazine's average newsstand sales for the period grew by 227,000 weekly copies sold, compared with the same period last year. Meanwhile, In Touch's readership has jumped 60 percent to 4.9 million readers, the largest growth of all consumer magazines, according to MRI's spring 2006 study.

At the festive dinner for Vogue's national sales meeting at New York's Hudson Yards Thursday night, the magazine's sales staff members were expected to receive a surprise first course on their plates: Herm?s bracelets for the women and belts for the men, each valued at around $450, a source said. This year marked Vogue's best-ever calendar year for ad revenue — admittedly a number that includes "13th issue" Vogue Living and the Fashion Rocks supplement. Although widely viewed as questionable, recently released Publisher's Information Bureau estimates put Vogue's revenue through October at $306 million. PIB estimated revenues last year were about $345 million, though both numbers reflect the sum of quoted page prices rather than what advertisers actually paid.

Time magazine said late Thursday its making sweeping changes to the way it sells advertising by slashing its rate base and changing its selling model to a “sell-by-audience” plan. At the same time, the magazine, which is trying to reinvent itself as more and more readers continue to abandon the printed page for the Internet, plans raise its newsstand price by $1 in a seemingly contradictory move. The country’s largest newsweekly has been struggling this year with falling newsstand sales -- down 24 percent in the first half of the year -- even as its overall circulation is up 1.2 percent to better than 4 million copies. Plans to raise the newsstand price by $1 come on the heels of a change that would move the magazine’s on-sale date from Monday to Friday. While the newsstand price hike takes effect next week, the other announced changes, including the on-sale date move, take effect in January. Time will lower its rate base beginning next year from 4 million to 3.25 million, relying “to a greater extent on subscriptions that are individually paid" and other sources of subscriptions that have "proven attractive to advertisers,” the magazine said in a statement. The reduction still puts the magazine ahead of its closest competitor Newsweek, which has a circulation of about 3 million. MORE ONLINE

Russia’s Supreme Court on Thursday overturned the acquittal of three men accused of involvement in the killing of Paul Klebnikov, the American who was the editor of Forbes magazine here, and ordered a new trial. The ruling revived a criminal case that appeared to have collapsed in May when a jury rejected prosecutors’ arguments and refused to convict Kazbek Dukuzov and Musa Vakhayev, the two men charged with carrying out the killing in July 2004, as well as a third suspect, Fail Sadretdinov, who was charged with related crimes. At the same time, the court’s ruling on Thursday underscored what some defense lawyers here have called a worrisome trend: the appeal and, frequently, the reversal of decisions by juries. MORE ONLINE
