******* Despite Teen Vogue’s positioning as the teen fashion bible, with ads from the likes of Prada and Louis Vuitton, Seventeen’s readers are more affluent, found Mediamark Research Inc.’s latest annual TeenMark study. Seventeen readers had a median household income of $60,975 (based on their parents’ response to a separate survey), according to the study, which measures the behaviors, attitudes and media usage of 12- to 19-year-olds. Median household income was $56,693 for CosmoGirl and $54,290 for Teen Vogue, according to MRI, which measured Teen Vogue for the first time. Readers of Hearst Magazines’ Seventeen also were slightly older than the two other top teen magazines by circulation, with a median age of 16.3 vs. 16 for Cond? Nast’s Teen Vogue and 16.1 for Hearst’s CosmoGirl. Seventeen’s fashion content is more accessible, which makes it a go-to source for teen readers when they’re ready to shop, said Jayne Jamison, the title’s vp, publisher. MORE ONLINE

Will Kraft's latest ads pass the smell test? In a sign of how marketers are making more use of scent in their advertising, Kraft Foods is sponsoring a special holiday issue of Time Warner's People magazine that comes with an olfactory twist. Five of Kraft's 31 ads in the issue, which should arrive in subscribers' mailboxes today, allow readers to rub a spot to experience the smell of one of the products being advertised. A full-page ad for Philadelphia Cream Cheese, for instance, shows a picture of strawberry cheesecake. When rubbed, the picture gives off the aroma of the dessert. Similarly, the scents of cinnamon coffee, cherry Jell-O and white chocolate will all be present in different ads. The smells aren't limited to ads: one of the articles will be accompanied by pictures of food, such as hot chocolate and sugar cookies, that give off a scent if rubbed. MORE ONLINE

IT'S RAINING MEN: It's not quite Time magazine, but speculation has been growing over who will make GQ's "Men of the Year" issue in December. Playing the field, the title has picked the "comic, musician and actor of our time" to appear on separate covers: Will Ferrell, Jay-Z and Leonardo DiCaprio. Lindsay Lohan is named "obsession of the year" and gives a tongue-and-cheek interview about how she wishes celebrity magazines would write more about her. (Are there enough trees?) Meanwhile, the photographs with the story show Lohan happily ripping up the pages of a tabloid. VOGUE, PART DEUX: Vogue's national sales meeting this week may have ended with an expensive bang — Memo Pad reported Friday that sales staff members received gifts from Herm?s — bracelets for the women and belts for the men, each valued at around $450 — to celebrate the magazine's best year ever for ad revenue. Publishers Information Bureau estimates, as printed in the same item, put revenues at $306.4 million for the first nine months of the year, an increase from $282.7 million in the same period of 2005. For all of 2005, Vogue's revenues were $345 million, according to PIB estimates. PIB is expected to estimate the magazine's ad revenues at about $380 million for the 12 months of 2006, a 10.1 percent increase. (The figures were unclear in the item Friday. PIB gets its estimates by multiplying page rates by number of ad pages, and may not reflect actual revenue of a given publication.) BALL OF ENERGY: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes took center stage at the Black Ball gala to benefit the Keep a Child Alive foundation at the Hammerstein Ballroom Thursday night, as the two chatted energetically with ex-Viacom chief Tom Freston at a front-row table near Iman and Valentino and Anne Hathaway (who arrived arm in arm). The dinner and concert, where Alicia Keys and David Bowie were among those who performed, honored Cond? Nast Media Group president Richard Beckman, among others. He said foundation founder Leigh Blake "had me at hello" at their initial meeting, when she convinced Beckman to become involved. Before the concert began, Beckman and Blake demonstrated their dance moves in the lobby, where Blake said Beckman's grace has spawned a Latin nickname. "I call him Ricardo Beckinelli," she said. — S.D.S. MORE ONLINE

The biggest news story in the gossip magazines last week was that the actors Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe are divorcing after seven years. The biggest story inside the gossip industry was that Life & Style and In Touch magazines, which are both owned by Bauer Publishing, managed to take completely opposing points of view. Life & Style carried a picture of Ms. Witherspoon on its cover (“It’s even worse than she thought”) or that In Touch carried a picture of Ryan Phillippe on its cover (“Ryan’s side of the story”). The covers could show an appalling lack of corporate cooperation or perhaps just shrewd marketing: after all, fans with allegiances to either star had their pick. Debra Birnbaum, editor in chief of Life & Style, explained that her magazine, went for the more “emotional angle.” She said she was as surprised to see In Touch’s cover last week as she would be to see the cover of Star or OK! “We never know what they are working on,” she said. “I consider them a competitor much as I consider other magazines a competitor.” MORE ONLINE

Dwell magazine has a new editor-in-chief. The independent shelter magazine said that Sam Grawe, a 29-year-old who joined the publication in 2000 as an editorial assistant, takes over the position beginning today. Grawe, who most recently served as executive editor, replaces Allison Arieff, who left in August amid a staff reorganization that promoted two senior editors to executive editor positions and expanded the role of the publication's managing editor. The six-year-old title, which last year posted a profit for the first time, plans to increase its frequency from nine to 10 issues next year and will increase its rate base from 275,000 to 300,000 from 275,000 with its February issue. The publication said in a statement that its revenue is up 70 percent this year across all brand platforms, while its advertising pages in the first 10 months of the year increased 23.9 percent to 1,005.56 from 811.72 pages for the same period in 2005. The mysterious dismissal of Bauer publisher Bob Davidowitz – announced late yesterday and ruminated about today – has brought with it its series of rationalizations for his muted exit. But only one explanation for why Davidowitz's subordinate and colleague are taking over his duties seems to stick. A Bauer insider tattles that while Bob seemed to be upping the ad pages for In Touch, his progress at Life & Style wasn't so spectacular. Our source says Bauer brass thinks "it should be just as easy to sell pages for Life & Style as it is for In Touch." Then again, "if you can't tell the difference between the quality between the two magazines, you're blind." While we haven't picked up a copy of L&S in months, we're told its ad pages per issue are hitting only single digits, while In Touch's are hitting double digit numbers. And what's Davidowitz hitting? Right about now, we'd guess the bottle. MORE ONLINE 7. JossipThe Desk Behind Graydon Carter's Editor's Letter Photo By Jossip Staff November 13, 2006 http://www.jossip.com/gossip/graydon-carter/the-desk-behind-graydon-carters-editors-letter-photo-20061113.php While the current issue of Vanity Fair has Oprah showing off her desk – and conspicuously placed Hermes teacup and saucer – the daytime queen isn't the only showing off her workspace. In the November/December issue of Departures (for Centurion and Platinum American Express cardmembers only), it's VF editor Graydon Carter who's on display. While he's not settling any feuds with carefully placed items, it's nice to see there's plenty of vanity next to the smokes. MORE ONLINE ************Whisper Jobs ************ Ed hears ...
