******* News ******* 1. WWD Memo Pad By Stephanie D. Smith and Amy Wicks November 16, 20006 http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/110697 NOT JUST A BUILDING Real estate advertisements are usually so unexciting, they are given back-of-the-book placement in most magazines. But a new campaign that will appear in Town & Country's December issue hopes to break the mold. The eight-page ad spread from the Talisker Club, a private membership club in Park City, Utah, was shot by fashion photographers Peter Lindbergh and Patrick Demarchelier (the first real estate/residential project for each), features Lauren Hutton and Angela Lindvall and appears between the mastheads, near the front of the book. "It's not just a picture of the property and its amenities," said Jim Taylor, vice president and publisher of Town & Country. "It has a lifestyle and fashion feel to it. It looks more editorial because it tells a story." He supported the idea that more real estate companies could follow Talisker Club's lead. "This is one of the fastest-growing categories," he added, "and it's a category that didn't even exist a few years ago." The ads will be printed on a thicker paper stock than the rest of the magazine. For 2006, real estate ads represented 2.5 percent (36 pages) of Town & Country's ad pages. Taylor aims to double that number next year. MORE ONLINE LANGMEAD LEAVING WALLPAPER Wallpaper editor Jeremy Langmead is swapping the world of design and Time Inc.'s British subsidiary IPC for designer duds and the Hearst subsidiary National Magazines. Langmead has been named editor of British Esquire and will begin as soon as his successor at Wallpaper is named ??” although no one knows how long that's going to take. Langmead said Wednesday that it was time for him to move on. He joined Wallpaper four years ago and oversaw its reinvention following the departure of founding editor Tyler Br?»l?©. "I had a really good time and feel like I'm leaving a strong and stable magazine. It's in safe hands," he said. And the gloves are already off for his next venture. He said one of the reasons he took the Esquire job was because there's no men's magazine in the U.K. that he wants to buy. So watch out, Dylan Jones (British GQ), William Drew (Arena) and Ross Brown (FHM)). "Esquire is a magazine with an extraordinary history, and I want it to have an equally extraordinary future," he said. Langmead will replace Simon Tiffin, who left earlier this year. TUNED OUT Gemstar-TV Guide International laid off 40 staffers on Tuesday, including 24 from the magazine and 14 from a data services division of the company, Data Solutions. At the magazine, layoffs affected both low- and senior-level workers in all divisions on both the editorial and business sides. "This is not unique to TV Guide," said a spokeswoman for the company. "In a tough publishing marketplace, we needed to look at ways to operate the magazine more cost-effectively. Unfortunately, that necessitated a reduction in staffing levels." TV Guide last fall underwent a radical overhaul when it morphed from a digest-size magazine to a full size and slashed its rate base to 3.2 million from 9 million. This year through Nov. 13, ad pages totalled 778, according to Media Industry Newsletter (comparables to 2005 were not available). MORE ONLINE

Marie Claire: The latest magazine to fall victim to Hudson News' breastgate. Not again. Less than 48 hours after we noted that Hudson News, the notoriously conservative Grand Central newsstand, was displaying Marie Claire's December issue, featuring a topless Ashley Judd, bare on its racks, appears to have had a change of heart. The newsstand, which until last month had censored five consecutive FHM covers in its display window, has decided to cover up Judd. FHM's December issue featuring lingerie-clad Jeri Ryan [below] is left uncovered. Why the sudden cover-up? "Moms were complaining," said a Hudson News clerk. Ironic, considering ex-ABC anchor Elizabeth Vargas is reportedly incensed about a photo illustration of her breastfeeding inside the Judd issue. Calls to Hudson News have yet to be returned.
3. New York Business
The Reader's Digest Association, Inc. said on Thursday that it has agreed to be acquired by an investor group led by Manhattan private equity firm Ripplewood Holdings for $2.4 billion, including the assumption of debt. Ripplewood, along with J. Rothschild Group, GoldenTree Asset Management, GSO Capital Partners, Merrill Lynch Capital Corp. and Magnetar Capital, will pay Reader??™s Digest stockholders $17 a share in cash ??“ representing a nearly 10% premium over Wednesday??™s closing price of $15.51. Pleasantville, N.Y.-based Reader??™s Digest has been facing an uphill battle since the start of the year. Earlier this month, the publisher of the popular Reader??™s Digest magazine reported a 9% gain in quarterly earnings that fell far short of Wall Street estimates. MORE ONLINE

Next month, Time magazine may pick a specific person to be its Person of the Year -- as opposed to "The American Soldier" in 2003, for example, or "Endangered Earth" in 1999. "I personally like it when a person is Person of the Year," said Managing Editor Richard Stengel, speaking to a luncheon crowd that came to the Time & Life Building yesterday to see a panel talk about possible contenders. Mr. Stengel described his preference even after his panelists reeled off plenty of pretty abstract suggestions, so it's pretty safe to say we can write off "NBC Nightly News" anchor Brian Williams' big idea: "You," a reference to rising user-created content, one-to-one marketing, wiki collaboration, YouTube and consumer control. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. Earlier this month, Prism Business Media purchased Conde Nast's Supermarket News for an undisclosed price. Prism says Supermarket News and its complementary Web site will form the basis for a new retailing group.

Ziff Davis Tuesday said its game group will discontinue the publication of Official U.S. Playstation Magazine following its January issue. The company said the print-only property no longer fits into its ???strategic vision??? for an ???integrated media network??? heavily focused on digital platforms. The magazine, which is licensed from Sony Computer Entertainment America, has been printed by Ziff for nine years. Ziff game group president Scott McCarthy said in a statement that the magazine has become obsolete due to the online capabilities that exist with Playstation 3. ???With this next generation of game consoles, the days of having to bundle a disc with a magazine to distribute games-related content are over,??? his statement said. ???And the disc has clearly been a major driver for consumer interest in premium-priced, platform-specific magazines in the past, when the magazine disc was the only way gamers could get such content."
