******* Private equity firms are continuing their tear in the media world, as Reader's Digest Association on Thursday agreed to be acquired by a group of investors, led by Ripplewood Holdings, for $2.4 billion. The Pleasantville, N.Y.-based publisher, which includes Every Day With Rachael Ray, said it doesn't know if management changes will follow. If the deal goes through, it will close by the end of the first half of 2007. A private equity source said the publisher has been undervalued by Wall Street and private equity sees an opportunity to grab a company at a good market value and raise it over the next five years. "They want to buy it now while it's cheap and prove that it is here to stay," said the source. A spokesman for Ripplewood declined to comment. Last month, Reader's Digest reported its first-quarter fiscal 2007 revenue was up slightly from last year, to $517 million. The company also is projecting to grow midsingle digits for the full fiscal year. While the core Reader's Digest has seen flat circulation for some time — for the first half, total circulation was 10,094,286, compared with 10,228,531 for the same period two years ago — it has seen better success with Every Day With Rachael Ray. That magazine plans to increase its rate base to 1.3 million from 750,000 with the February issue. MORE ONLINE

Christopher McCowen was sentenced to life in prison without parole Thursday for the murder and rape of former fashion writer Christa Worthington. His legal team immediately filed an appeal and, for the first time, he publicly proclaimed innocence in Barnstable County Superior Court in Massachusetts. The verdict came just a few days after the jury announced a deadlock and subsequently lost its third juror for speaking about the deliberations with her jailed boyfriend. The jury agreed Thursday that McCowen, a garbage collector, killed the 46-year-old Worthington in her Cape Cod home in 2002. Superior Court Judge Gary Nickerson sentenced McCowen to three concurrent life sentences without the possibility of parole for being convicted of first-degree murder, aggravated rape and aggravated burglary. FORMER YES Network boss Leo Hindery - now managing director of private equity firm InterMedia Partners LP - is in the hunt for Time4 Media's sport titles that Time Inc. is unloading. In May, InterMedia made a substantial investment in The Sportsman Channel, a three-year-old outfit that bills itself as the only place on cable TV "dedicated exclusively to hunting and fishing 24 hours a day, seven days a week." Based in Big Bend, Wis., the company would seem to be a good fit for a group that includes venerable titles like Field & Stream, Outdoor Life, as well as Ski, Skiing, TransWorld Snowboarding and Popular Science. (NEW YORK) In front of a crowd thick with fashion icons and celebrities to boot, Doo-Ri Chung of Doo.Ri was named the 2006 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner Thursday night at Skylight Studios. Runners up included Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy and Thakoon Panichgul of Thakoon. Chung, who was also nominated for the same accolade in 2004—eventually losing to Proenza Schouler’s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez—takes home a $200,000 monetary prize to be used to further enhance her label. Chung also received a Montblanc watch and a year’s lease on a 2007 Lexus, both companies of which were sponsors of this year’s Fashion Fund. The Mulleavys and Panichgul each receive $50,000. As with past winners, each of the three parties will be partnered with a team of business mentors chosen based on their needs. The list of this year’s finalists also included Jovovich-Hawk’s Carmen Hawk and Milla Jovovich, Marcus Wainwright and David Neville of Rag & Bone, Justin Giunta of Subversive, Devi Kroell, Robert Tagliapietra and Jeffrey Costello of Costello Tagliapietra, Phillip Lim for 3.1 Phillip Lim, and Keren Craig and Georgina Chapman of Marchesa. GRAYDON Carter could teach the celebs who appear on the cover of Vanity Fair a thing or two about talking to the media. Carter was interviewed for the holiday issue of Bergdorf Goodman magazine jointly with New York magazine columnist Kurt Andersen in conjunction with the release of "Spy: The Funny Years," a look back at the satirical magazine they launched in 1986. Recalling the "silent investor who refused to be silent, a playboy named Jean 'Johnny' Pigozzi," Carter said: "Pigozzi only had two ways of treating people. You were either a manservant or you were Mick Jagger . . . I was closer to manservant. I did the shoes. Kurt did the jackets. He [Pigozzi] was a fun person. But he was not properly equipped to handle quote-unquote talented people." On Carter's relationship with Donald Trump: "He hated Tina Brown more than he hated me. Therefore he liked me." On mellowing with age: "If you're still angry in your 50s, you don't need a magazine, you need help." Tonight in Miami, Miramax Books hosts a dinner at the Raleigh for "Spy: The Funny Years" with a party later in the penthouse thrown by Andre Balazs for the literary likes of Jay McInerney, Alex Kuczyinski and Nora Ephron.
